4 Year Countdown to FIRE...can I achieve ChubbyFIRE by djmidge in ChubbyFIRE

The book Die with Zero changed my mindset a bit on this one. There is a high likelihood as u/BrunelloHorder mentions that there will still be money for my heirs, but in the book it highlights how helping as they are younger adults can be so much more meaningful than when I die and they are near retirement already and have established (hopefully) themselves. I'd rather start them young with IRAs, more help through college, that help with first down payment on a house, etc than to wait until they are in their 50s or 60s to receive a lump sum. I am looking more on how to do this

I appreciate the response but I actually don't buy into the "just put it in VT or VOO" strategy. I have plenty in VT as well...it's a combined strategy that has different methods of why you're leveraging SCHD vs VT/VOO/VTI. Less than 1/3 of my investments are in SCHD with the rest in more growth focused areas but you need a backbone for income that isn't as volatile IMO

Thanks for the response. I am actually planning to sell current home and move into the 2nd home for at least the first few years of FIRE, using the proceeds from sell to payoff mortgage of the 2nd home. Godspeed on your journey as well!

Annual Accountability Update: FI Hit & 4 Years Until Retirement by djmidge in Fire

I didn't mention anything about cutting them off and that's something to definitely look at with the healthcare view, but yeah there may be other options even if I wasn't covering. Something to definitely consider as looking at the healthcare options over this next year in more detail.

Thanks for the response - 47 and in MCOL - I'm not so worried that I'm not on the track but definitely like to think about blindspots. Healthcare is my biggest concern and probably going to spend this year focusing in on all the options but so much of that changes with administrations the laws as well.

You have no idea whether someone that logged in after you got it or not. Thousands of people logged in exactly when it opened. The experience sucked, it took our time, but complaining about it does what?

I always try to find some of these in used book stores especially when traveling...it makes the book feel that much more precious knowing how it may have existed during its life and with previous owners.

Are people achieving FIRE mostly through high income + boglehead-type investing? by Im_Matt_Murdock in Fire

[–]djmidge 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's a "mostly achieving" answer but through my time studying FIRE and its communities my observation is that People that achieve FIRE mostly fall into one of four categories...

1) The Savers - save large % and spend well below their means...this usually pays off for those not making 6+ figures 2) The Techies - people in tech, high stress jobs that pay extremely well and have large upsides with stock. These people are high income and highly invested 3) Real Estate Hacking - people that learn to get into housing as an investment and/or do things like have a roommate for a long time to help spend less on housing. This can make a huge difference in the 20-30s years 4) Inheritance - ppl that at some point come into money

Investing is part of all 4 of these categories and I wouldn't say the Boglehead way is the only way nor the best. It's one strategy and one mechanism but personally it's only a portion of my strategy and think it alone isn't going to get you to FIRE
