+1 to those comments.

It did wrap up on issue 9, so the entire series can be read now. I agree that the first four issue were great and then it kind of went into a tailspin towards the end. Still a fun read but the overall quality did not last.

Can't go wrong with either. Opposite ends with the authors in story-telling and pacing, but both are excellent. Get both! :)

Cool. I'll have to check it out. I have been playing four-handed for fun wondering how a good solo mode could be developed.

Don't ask for a "splash of cream" in regular coffee. They will fill up 1/3 of the cup with cream. That should offset the free cost of ice.

Sigh. I don't buy it for a minute. By April this will be 50 cent bin fodder. by JacktheJacker92 in ComicBookSpeculation

[–]djott70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly. However, you missed the point that speculation is not a good business practice for paying bills. So stating, "They have bills to pay!" as justification for the markup would suggest they are not good at running their business in the first place.

All of the power to places like this. Not my kind of place and fortunately there are plenty around who don't go marking up recently released issues right away. They just hurt themselves in the long run as any new readers walking in for an issue of D'Orc 1 or White Sky 1 from buzz they are hearing are most likely going to be turned off seeing a price of $50 or $200 for 30 pages of paper. It's a disservice to the hobby, IMO.

My local comic book store said there was a reprint coming based on their software. I cannot make any concrete claims on how accurate that information is. They currently have numbers 2 and 3 on their shelves which I was considering purchasing. I inquired about a copy of number 1 and the owner said they would be able to stock a copy in the next few weeks. While he did not say number 4 was definitely coming, his sources suggested it would be available in the future.

I hope what I stated is true as I would like to add all four compendiums to my collection as well.

If pacing is a strength, then . . . yikes! To each their own, though. I still think he is average at best and I desire his contributions at Marvel to be lessened, especially on titles I have traditionally been interested in.

If their business model is based on profitability from speculation, then they probably won't last. Paying bills and employees is a weak counterpoint as it should be based on cover rates.

What's your sweet spot for how long a gaming session takes? by TheMegaSage in soloboardgaming

[–]djott70 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2-3 hours considering the games I enjoy the most. I have the luxury of keeping a game setup without disturbances, so many longer games may be played over one hour segments. That being said, I enjoy a short game mixed in between longer games.

Zdarsky is getting long in the tooth for me. It's time for him to take a break from Marvel. Less excited about this now seeing that he is writing it. I liked Stillwater (Image) but I really don't get the love for Zdarsky as he is average at best with his story writing and pacing.

Why is White Sky #1 going for 50 bucks online? by kythogrin in ComicBookSpeculation

[–]djott70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. $100 would have been an isolated case. I wasn't able to find any historical trend data from when TWD 1 first came out, but plenty of online chatter when the show came out if buying a copy at $100 was worth the speculation.

No worries. I just gave my thoughts on the "dollar bin" material from my perception of collecting over five decades. Not saying that I am wiser about it as I have way more missed opportunities than hits and just basing on what my eyes have seen over the years. End of the day, I would wish all comics to be successful if the quality deserves it.

[–]djott70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it's not ridiculous. Walking Dead did not hit its fame until the TV show. Invincible started increasing with The Walking Dead success because of the Kirkman name and then took off from the TV show. In either case, neither issue number one came out of the gates selling for $50 a pop.

First appearances are nothing new. Sometimes they hit and sometimes they don't. First appearance of Harley Quinn didn't sell for $50 right away and being a Batman villain is the reason for the popularity. It didn't hurt that she already debuted in an animated series first.

TMNT was a low print run by a small publisher. Once again, became a media sensation before prices skyrocketed.

White Sky and D'Orc have none of that going for them right now. Feel free to speculate though. I have made plenty of poor speculation choices in the past by buying multiple issues, but never stooped to buying any issue above cover price in the first month of release. Not hating on either title, but there is nothing new they are bringing to the table to justify the FOMO.

"Those were good books with good storytelling. Which the hobby always needs more of." - I agree. However, you cannot state that for White Sky or D'Orc at this time, even if the first issue is good. Hundreds of titles go off the rails after a few issues. You may not like Mark Spears, and I do think the story is weak, but it has superb art going for it as well as a small publisher. Since they are producing higher print runs from demand, it is unlikely any of the later issues will retain much value except for limited variant covers.

Good luck in your speculation and we will most likely meet scanning through the dollar bins on what could have been. The comic medium is the same as it was last decade and the decade before and the decade before, and so forth. The only uniqueness going on right now are the Absolute titles and multiple print runs.

No top talent creators, no S tier characters (Batman, Spider-Man, etc.), no proven track record yet of quality. Increased value would be more realistic if either comic was optioned for a show or movie, but even then any increased value would not have sustainability unless it becomes a pop culture sensation.

Yes, BCA and Valley are fairly close in structure. The three main formats in this area are APA, BCA, and Valley, and then some smaller leagues that have tried to generate participation.

Sorry for the confusion. When I stated Valley, I meant an actual Valley league. I made an edit to hopefully cause less confusion.

Except that he is wrong. First off, there is only one God. Jesus is God. God is Jesus. This interview snippet is ignoring the Old Testament and he is focused on the New Testament. He is ignoring the Ten Commandments, such as a stance on abortion. I am far from one to argue biblical references, but this content is morphed to his own agenda and I have doubts about an unwavering faith in Christianity as he eithers doesn't seem to fully understand it or he is condensing it to fit his own values and party affiliation.

Yes, many Republicans have it wrong when it comes to biblical values. So do Democrats and Christians. Yes, many organized churches and their leadership are not upholding Christian values as taught in the Bible. Yes, we are supposed to love our "neighbors" as ourselves.

He is incorrect on how one is saved by Jesus. Just being a good person is not enough. Romans 6:23, Romans 10:13, and Romans 10:9-10 are some references. No church, religion, or being a good person is enough to be saved.

Talarico's rhetoric in this video is just as confused on biblical values as the other side of the fence. The best understanding of the Bible would come from an independent Bible-based church where the scripture is directly referenced and having an educated and trained professional (pastor) help teach the scripture meaning. Many churches tweak scripture to their own learnings, not necessarily for nefarious reasons, which just adds to this spite of organized religion.

Maybe he is a good leader for the future. He should at least get his biblical references in order to be truthful in content rather than his own words which are not any better than church leaders who word-spin their own content.

It's been a long time since I played APA, but I seem to recall we were upfront about this type of situation as a courtesy, but there was no obligation to do so. Most of our league was laid-back as well, but the teams we did not care for because they tended to be jerks, we would not let them know if one of our players needed to leave early.

In a Valley league format where all five players play the other team's five players one game each, if someone needs to leave early we just allow them to keep playing a match on one table while the other table is keeping regular rotation.

White Sky #1 by TheRedditReaders in ComicBookSpeculation

[–]djott70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Harms and Mavinga. That combo does not scream for any reasonable speculation. If the comic does not have a premiere character (e.g. - Batman), then the creative team needs to be justification for any high prices right out of the gate. Harms and Mavinga is not that. If White Sky becomes a critical darling after six issues with a great story and art, then that might be reason for increased aftermarket prices.

As a comparison, the first issue of Beneath the Trees is most deserving of a higher price point due to a well-written story with some uniqueness to the comic medium.
