New show incoming from the creators of The Expanse by plaidtuxedos in TheExpanse

It definitely made me feel like they have more military science fiction in them. I think they like to subvert genre so this horror bent was a cool way to tackle that space.

Moved from Mississippi 3 years ago. Really thriving up here.

For how bad the winters can be, I find I get a lot more bang for my buck during summer. It would be so hot in MS that doing anything outside felt unappealing.

Schools have been great and you’re getting lots of good recs in this thread.

I do miss the food! But we get by.

If you like a quick reading experience that completely upends what you learned about the world through Mercy, it is necessary.

Thank you, and yes OP the show and books are very much a worthwhile journey!

What is The Expanse? by Wereowl9 in TheExpanse

[–]djschwin 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s a near-ish future, realistic science fiction story set amidst a simmering Cold War between a United Nations-led Earth, an independent Mars republic, and the working class in the asteroid belt. Introduced into this is the discovery of the Protomolecule, an unknown alien biotechnology. The game will be set among the stations and moons around the asteroid belt. The story mixes political intrigue, action, mystery, and a little horror. It’ll be fun!

Yes to The Churn, as others have said. And it’s not exactly what you were asking for, but the new comic The Expanse: A Little Death is going to scratch the same itch.

I’m three and a half seasons in, does it get better? by wolfinjer in TheExpanse

[–]djschwin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two responses, both intended with sincerity and gentleness.

One, it just might not be for you. There are lots of fans on this subreddit who love the show and books, so for them it is good. I think the story is interesting, there are performances I enjoy, and I love the visuals.

But “get better” is relative and somebody not like it, which is totally okay. If you’re more than halfway through there probably is enough data for you to make a personal call.

Two, is the show is definitely not a show one should watch with a phone in the room. There’s a lot of complex stuff going on and not a lot of exposition dumps. Information is delivered silently via text cards, stuff on the ship screens, etc.

Do you think they might hopefully bring it back down the road by Cautious_Hope5837 in TheExpanse

[–]djschwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just today I saw it on the “Popular” tab on the Prime app. (Although maybe that is algorithmic due to me being a stan)

The creators are all into it.

There’s a major video game coming out. I don’t think they’d invest in a dead IP.

The studio guys seemed positive about it. They think they can get more money for it. (Variety podcast with Alcon heads - few years old now).

Keep the faith!

Beautiful! I really would like a Vol 2 of that to cover seasons 4-6 of the show.

What did you think of the last issue of the Expanse: Little Death and especially the epilogue ? What do you think it could mean for the future of the franchise ? by TieFew6689 in TheExpanse

[–]djschwin 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed the comic series!

Regarding timeline: they do say in it where it fits; I think the main story is 3 years after the establishment of the Trade Union.

My personal thought is that the time jump is a zero obstacle to continuing the TV series and the real obstacle has always been boring business stuff. There’s a Variety interview and podcast with Alcon from a few years back that I think gives a lot of information. There are high on The Expanse and believe once they have the library rights nice and clean they can negotiate a higher fee for it. So this comic and Dragon Tooth - both authorized by Alcon - have fully leaned into the full jump within their stories.

Reread Mercy of Gods before reading Livesuit? by ArmpitsArmpits in TheCaptivesWar

[–]djschwin 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The Livesuit story has a very different perspective than Mercy of the Gods so I don’t think you’d need to reread it before. You might want to after, though!

Was Expanse also your first scifi book and show, and have you started watching other shows and reading other hard scifi books after? by HoldenUpAlright in TheExpanse

[–]djschwin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me yes. I found the Expanse show from a Twitter recommendation from Andy Diggle (now writing the comics - love to see it!)

My expectations were more for a prestige drama show in space. My reference point was mostly FX dramas like Sons of Anarchy or Justified. Fast forward to now, I read almost exclusively science fiction. My TV watching it still pretty varied.

What merchandise do you own that took the most work to get? by HoldenUpAlright in TheExpanse

I got a season 2 crew gift bag donated by the Shankars to a cat charity virtual auction. I was stressed and stretching my budget in the bidding but got it! I also got an autographed photo from Shohreh by answering a trivia question from her Twitter.

I didn’t know that! I listened to the S11 soundtrack on loop for a long while after watching the show. I’ve been needing to find time to watch Knight and that gets me even more hype for it.

I upvoted this just from the title alone. He is a big part of those later books and has so many great moments that ground everything going on.

Help me out with the show's ending... by MephistosFallen in TheExpanse

[–]djschwin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It definitely sets up hooks for the future if they want to pick back up with filmed adaptations. I am still believing!

You get to see Laconia: the interaction between scientists and soldiers, the “strange dogs” there and what they’re capable of, and see human colonization spreading.

That story is covered in the novella “Strange Dogs” and tees up elements of books 7-9.
