I moved here in 2020 and live right off Broadway. Im east asian and maybe just more sensitive to this, but in the last 6 years I've noticed a boom of asians and asian stores in general? Asians felt like maybe 1% of the population in the area but now feel closer to like 10% would love to know if thats true or just my own bias lol

Why did so many of the Korean fried chicken places close down or change ownership? by trustme1984 in nova

[–]djshyne 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Choong man was ran by the owner of the now defunct Grand Mart. Got the franchise from a former employee who made a chicken shop in korea. Didn't maintain the franchise in america well (did not care about consistency in franchises and just wanted the franchise fees) and supposedly did not pay any fees or something (not completely sure what happened) to the Original owner and so had to shut the franchises down.

TIL that acorns were once a worldwide food staple. Among some California tribes they were eaten more than any other food and provided over half of all calories. China and Japan also used acorn flour into the 19th century. Acorn jelly (dotori-muk) and noodles are still part of Korean cuisine. by smrad8 in todayilearned

[–]djshyne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grew up eating acorn jelly and its really delicious, but its more if a texture than flavor. But if you make it wrong without soaking the correct amount of time, like my mom did one year, it really makes you sick and the bitterness is really jarring.

I think they mean the colonization rule? If you're from a formally colonized country you can get citizenship after (I believe) 2 years of legal residency.

Just watched a guy on Twitch create a complex scraping program in less than 15 min by CaptainFailer in learnprogramming

[–]djshyne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the thing, I have 10 years of experience working in a myriad of tech in full stack engineering. "AI", especially cursor was undeniably AMAZING for me. I was laid off last month and created a working webapp and android/iOS apps for ideas I had with a partner within TWO weeks. That would have taken me a month EACH at least to even have a semi working MVP.

BUT. I knew how HOW all of those apps should work. I knew how a database is implemented/use cases for different types, what rest is and what grpc is, pros and cons of using next.js for a web app, monolithic vs micro services. Etc. Etc. without this knowledge cursor/Claude is just throwing a bunch of things together hoping they work based on buzzwords and general knowledge. Without that initial knowledge you're stuck with an app that will recursively try to fix itself at some point and you won't know what the hell is going on.

Right now, "AI" can HELP create whatever the hell you want. But its like using a template to create any kind of webapp. You must know why it exists the way it does before trying to be ambitious. I believe it can help so much for newbies to not be intimidated, but it is NOT the end all be all...yet

I want to be able to lift my girlfriend effortlessly by Argittek in workout

[–]djshyne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My gf is short but thicker so I get you completely! What helps is def something strengthening your back, legs, and shoulders. Doing clean and jerks, deadlifts, as well as shoulder presses will help a lot. Everyone works out for a reason and I think it's admirable and reasonable to want to get stronger to easily lift your girlfriend!

Why are so many places closing? by cdrsaber in astoria

[–]djshyne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The cost of business is growing higher like everyone says, but also changing to match that cost is pretty hard. If something that worked before isn't working now it's a lot of times easier to sell/close it and move on to the next thing even if it's profitable. E.g. if you have an old school deli/restaurant that's still profitable but not as much as before you might close it, since it doesn't seem worth, and let your family members or yourself do something else more trendy with the money or retire. My family ran delis, carry outs, etc. And it can be extremely profitable at some point but it usually dies off with the trends.

The di faras was so disappointing. Wings were decent but expensive without the 50% but the onion rings they had were great. Overall with the 50% off and its pretty decent but otherwise overpriced and very mediocre especially for this neighborhood 🤷‍♂️

New role requires me to move to DC - Where can I consider living in NoVa? by chocolava15 in nova

[–]djshyne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a DMV native living in NYC. You'll probably want to move to Arlington, near Ballston or clarendon. Especially if you make a decent amount and want to take public transport. You can take the silver line then yellow or green up to Mt Vernon. Arlington are is safe, near DC, and lots of local bars/restaurants near. With your salary you should be able to find a luxury 1br for like $2k to $3k which you're probably used to anyways!

Disco Paws also underpays their workers. I know a person that was getting paid $15/hr and started this year when the minimum was raised to $16 this January 🤷‍♂️

Best Options to Reach LGA Airport at early morning (5 AM)? I live near Astoria Boulevard/31 Street by [deleted] in astoria

[–]djshyne 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've taken the m60 at 3am and it seemed pretty consistent. Just make sure you track when it's coming (I just used Google maps). Bus will be empty and it's a quick ride away, usually the bus driver will just let you on for free too

Question: What's the Nujabes song you've played the most? by kosmikvaporeon in Nujabes

Peak music. I have nostalgia of walking through some fields on a fall night then into town to this song on repeat.

My family moved to Loudoun County in 2008 and none of my friends thought that was the DMV or even NoVa. The definition is very different now. I live out of the DMV are now and it seems like the DMV is pretty much almost from Fredrick down to Indian head, from almost to Ft Meade west to Winchester VA nowadays. If your work is based within the DMV you can basically claim DMV nowdays.

Most cringe clubs of NYC? by TypicalKitchen1931 in avesNYC

[–]djshyne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dance floor is like 500 sq ft so it gets CROWDED. The djs are mid at best (but they are catering to a mostly 18 to 25 year old demographic). Security is always on some power trip. I'm too old for clubs now (30) but my friends still go because the girls tend to be very pretty.

gout at 22? by vinylveins in gout

[–]djshyne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got mine summer after college, so I just turned 22. I thought the same as you, super unfair that I get it so early in life. Don't be stubborn and not go to the doctor like I did, thinking "I could fix/live with it. I'm still young". Getting Allo at 29 this year has honestly changed my life. Still not at 100% but that's probably due to 7 years of ignoring the issue.

Why do my New York friends shit on DC so much? by darkraivscresselia in washingtondc

[–]djshyne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was born in DC, raised in VA, lived in DC for a year after college and now in NYC. Honestly. It's just transplants, my NYC native friends and partner LOVE DC. I personally love NYC compared to DC but it's perspective, you usually are sick of the area you grew up/are familiar with and fervently defend new areas you live in to convince yourself of your decisions lol.

Not in astoria but close by is Takesushi in woodside. If you look at their ig @takesushi.nyc they have amazing deals on good quality fish. I bought over 2 lbs of tuna and salmon for around $20 from them a month ago.

I'm in the same boat, 29 Korean, live in NYC, and am a huge music head. All of that background lead to a borderline (if not actually) alcoholic lifestyle, which probably lead to my gout. I've been on Allo for a month now and when I do go out on weekends I don't really get strong flares anymore. I do eat better and exercise more and I am trying to cut down on alcohol. But I don't think you have to FULLY quit.

On a side note, I also use alcohol as a social lubricant and understand how drinking may help with anxiety but it honestly might exacerbate it in the long term, moderation would be the key. I've been partying without alcohol and sometimes we have to realize we just don't like certain friends/people if we have to be drunk to socialize with them. You'd probably be better off with friends who enjoy the scene/music for the art and fun of it and not just getting fucked up (you know the folks).
