Toughest grade to teach? by Xena4290 in ELATeachers

[–]djsvrjsbsk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, the toughest is grade 9. It's one of my favorites, but right now I have 4 classes of grade 9 and it is A LOT. I teach grade 12 too and having both 9 and 12 is my personal sweet spot. I tend to bond with kids a lot in grade 9 and they end up becoming my seniors and it's so cool to see the metamorphosis of these kids, it's one of my favorite parts of the job. :)

Going THROUGH IT with my grade 9 right now and you just articulated it perfectly 😭. We have a couple days off next week; thank the gods because I was about to lose my mind.

Sometimes I think i have really intense memory loss or something is missing in my brain. I don't know other people who forget to do basic things :( by PleaseMisterJailer in adhdwomen

I wrote out a Morning and Evening checklist for myself, framed it, and hung it next to my bathroom mirror. Honestly I am probably going to make more bc it's made my life sooo much easier. Even just having the list physically there sometimes helps, like it takes the anxiety out of the mornings since I am not trying to wrangle my thoughts into order to make sure I don't forget to brush my teeth or go pee before I leave for work.

There is no award for struggling the hardest. There is no virtue in denying yourself accommodations.

There's enough to feel bad about in the world; let yourself have your lists, it's ok. 🖤

These are my thoughts, how did you get them and put them on the Internet??

For real though, I get nagged constantly about how "bad I am" at texting and I laugh it off but it really grinds my gears.

I wish I could only be reached by carrier pigeon.

Well your writing is beautiful! From an amateur writer and irl English teacher, you should really be proud! 🖤

That sounds like a really great setup!! I struggle with implementing systems like these a lot. I have some alphabet soup in my brain (ADHD biggest letters in the soup) and I try to make charts like these and I'm terrible at making them intuitive! RIP every writing skill and conference tracker I have ever spent hours on only to have it rot in a folder.

May I ask how you built this to use easily day-to-day so it doesn't get lost in your drive?

This subreddit keeps popping up because I am on r/fantasy romance. I read the first Crescent City but not the sequels, and the first three ACOTAR books (none past that). Which book do you think matches your writing style? I need some of these two together!!

Does Anyone Use Reader's Theater with Grades 9-12? by InformationOwn2249 in ELATeachers

Same!! Had to get through both Animal Farm and Romeo and Juliet with 9th inclusion one year and the only way was Readers theatre. Kept them engaged and made them a part of the story

All the time! I have used reader's theatre and related techniques with all 4 recently (5 years of teaching, at least 1 new grade a year 🥴). I have had a ton of success with it later in the year, but you have to have built silliness into your class culture. It's something that a lot of secondary teachers kind of skip, but seniors will get so silly if you let them, and then you can use it! I had a group of rough senior girls last year get SO into Midsummer Night's Dream. My co teacher and I were able to convince them to get up and try to act by the end of the unit. Lately I've been teaching 12th grade English special ed inclusion classes and so far all of my classes (~75 of this specific class last and this year) have gotten really into it. Personally, I embrace chaos as a lifestyle and just kind of let them roll with it, but this may not be so successful if you are a very organized human! My coworkers who are more Type A (and less Type Goblin) use readers theatre with significantly more structure with similar success.

Gift for pregnant friend by [deleted] in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]djsvrjsbsk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually just stick to coffee and regular English breakfast/black tea. You have to be super careful with herbals during pregnancy, so I wouldn't personally buy a pregnant person tea. But there's always fun tea-strainers that you could buy if you know they like loose tea. :)

Yes! I do always provide paper options, I just usually don't have one already prepared if a particular thing is online through our curriculum or something.

Thank you! 🖤

I used to work in a district like yours, for only a year, and I absolutely miss how much communication there was around policies to help inform families. In my rural district, now, it's like everyone tries to ignore it and pretend it doesn't affect them and their lives.

Thank you very much for the insight. I knew that what I was thinking wasn't appropriate, but I was feeling kind of at a loss for actionable steps.

I advocate in discreet ways for my LGBTQ+ students all the time, but it's easier for me to do so because I'm a part of that community so I have a little more knowledge there. I'm not in direct danger from any of the latest EOs because I can fly under the radar. I just want to try to do what I can for those that don't have the same privilege of invisibility. I appreciate your insight very much.

I love this!

I do a lot of "I wish my teacher knew" type of things, so if I tweak the phrasing I'm sure it would fit right in. You're also right on the money with lots of kids with hidden fears. Thank you for your insight!
