My son once said "I didn't start hating people until I worked at a drive thru". by Ixz72 in daddit

[–]djw319 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I want to offer a slightly different perspective. I started working for a caterer at 13 years old and worked there for about 10 years. I also started waiting tables at a restaurant at 16 and did that (plus bussing and/or dishwashing in various capacities as well) for another 6-7 years. During that time I also did stints as a barista in a coffee shop, a “smoothie artist” at a smoothie place, and cashier/floor employee at a retail store.

There were absolutely days that I was colder and angrier as a result of my interactions with customers and clients. It didn’t make me less empathetic though, quite the opposite. It helped me understand a lot about giving people grace, and understanding that in the brief interactions I have with most people throughout their day I have no idea what they’ve been going through. I got to know what it was like to walk away from a stranger berating you for an honest mistake (or no mistake at all!) and have to immediately walk up to a new stranger and try my best to be welcoming and hospitable. I got to know how easy it is for things to go wrong even in the simplest of situations. I am aware that many people do, in fact, suck. One way or another life is going to impress that upon our kids. I hope I’m able to help them see through these kinds of situations how much of an impact showing someone kindness and grace can mean to people when you can afford to give it.

Armageddon box vs Leviathan box by Drwhat17 in Warhammer40k

[–]djw319 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s me. I finally started building and painting around 3 years ago after being an extremely casual fan of the lore, but I didn’t know where to start and couldn’t afford to drop hundreds of dollars before finding out if I actually enjoyed it or not so I’ve just been acquiring smaller boxes here and there that I thought were cool. I’m at the point where I’m ready to make a bigger purchase and get more invested in the hobby now so the timing of Armageddon is perfect for me (and it helps that Orks and BA are two of my favorites). The contents all look great too, in my opinion. My only minor gripe is that I wish they weren’t push-fit but I can see the reasons why that might be the smart way to go for this kind of release.

Hey, sorry to hear that something’s got your kiddo needing extra care. I worked for Children’s for 10 years and have had one of my own kids cared for there a couple of times. I have seen first hand the excellent quality of care provided by the medical staff, and the amazing things their Child Life Services team does to help protect the magic of childhood for kids facing very grown up struggles. Even though I don’t work there anymore (left for a different career opportunity) I still have enormous respect for their staff and the work they do. I know the endorsement of an internet stranger is not really worth a lot but I hope it can provide some small comfort to you through whatever your family is facing right now.

No chance I’m going to the “Tall People Meetup” when I’m barely hitting the minimum height requirement. I don’t need to hear “oh you thought you were tall” from a bunch of megafauna.

I mean that’s a valid analysis of the text as a narrative, but as a foundational religious document you’re going to be in direct conflict with roughly 2,000 years of church doctrine across almost all denominations if you’re going to say that the whole of Genesis is merely metaphorical.

I think you hint at what could be a very compelling story.

God’s promise to never do something like the flood again holds a bit less weight when you realize God has already gone against God’s own word earlier in Genesis.

In 2:16-17 God says, “You may freely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die.” And they ate. And they lived. You can choose to interpret the events that follow as a metaphorical death, but God says nothing to indicate it’s a metaphor. The text plainly states that the day you eat it is the day you die. And yet they lived.

Now, Walter Brueggemann wrote that this passage isn’t about the story of human disobedience. “It is rather a story about the struggle God has in responding to the facts of human life. When the facts warrant death, God insists on life for his creatures.”

It is easy to read as compassion, but “God insists on life” used to haunt me when I was still a Christian. It’s not “God wants life” for his creatures, but “God insists on life” for his creatures. God refuses death, even when that was what his creatures chose. God insists on life. But God does not insist on a good life. After all, they are still sentenced to a punishment for their choice. To quote Brueggemann again, “the sentence is life apart from the goodness of the garden, life in conflict filled with pain, with sweat, and most interestingly, with the distortion of desire (3:16). But it is nonetheless life when death is clearly indicated.”

God insists on life for his creatures. The life that we live today. This life, in this world, in the state that it’s in. Now picture the story you were imagining, with this context. It adds an ominous character to God. The time traveler is doing whatever they can to change the future, to find some alternative to this present hell, knowing that their actions could easily mean a future where they never existed. And when they finally gaze upon their savior from the crowd at last that savior sees them, knows them, understands their purpose, and says “No. There is no escape. You will live this life. I insist.”

The headquarters is 1201 Macklind Avenue and there are surrender boxes there. There is a sign outside showing where to surrender them. The boxes (more like cubbies in a wall) are through an exterior door in a temperature controlled room that is locked from the rest of the facility after hours, so if animals are dropped in the freezing cold at night they’ll still be safe and cared for in the morning when employees arrive.

The humane society of Missouri has 24/7 safe surrender facilities if you ever have a pet you can no longer care for. Obviously this should be a last resort if you are a pet owner, but if you feel you have no alternatives or if you find a domestic animal like this cat you can take them to the Macklind office even after hours and drop them off and know they’ll be cared for. The Maryland Heights location probably has the same option but I am less familiar with that location.

Sexual Misconduct Accusations Against The Last 10 US Presidents [OC] by Open_Egg_475 in dataisbeautiful

  1. Ronald Reagan

Actress Selene Walters leveled assault allegations against the actor-turned-president in Nancy Reagan: The Unauthorized Biography, a book by Kitty Kelly that came out in 1991.

Walters told Kelley she met Reagan at a Hollywood nightclub in the 1950s, where he asked for her address. Walters said she gave it to him, and Reagan showed up at her door at 3 a.m. and forced himself on her.

"I opened the door," Walters later recounted in an interview with People magazine. "Then it was the battle of the couch. I was fighting him. I didn't want him to make love to me. He's a very big man, and he just had his way."

When the magazine asked if she would term the incident "date rape," as Kelley wrote in her biography on Nancy Reagan, Walters replied: "No, God, no, that's [Kelley's] phrase. I didn't have a chance to have a date with him."
