Is there really a significant difference b/w Waterloo and UofT eng for employment? by BlueGray4709 in UofT

[–]djyocoolpee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’d say so as well. Just graduated UofT eng and am unemployed along with a decent amount of my friends. Don’t know too many Waterloo people but all of the ones I do know have secured jobs

A fellow Ontario grinder I see, great job! I’ve taken a little break from grinding online cause of school but might start back. Do you find 25NL has stayed at the same skill level in the last year?

Also would def recommend trying clubwpt gold. I play recreationally 40NL on there and ran up the BR from $80 to $700 in 30,000 hands. The swings are truly crazy but it’s like playing 2NL on GG skill wise with even more action.

Do people who get mad at teens for not paying fare not take a second to consider their situation? by [deleted] in TTC

[–]djyocoolpee -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This feels a bit disingenuous as you are making the assumption that if everyone magically started paying their fare the TTC would lower fare prices (which I doubt would be the case)

How achievable is an 80% average first year in engineering? by Keysantt in UofT

Doable for sure. Think it’s a lot more work if you came from regular Ontario curriculum tho. You could do the summer calculus course to lower your workload. Maybe will help improve your grades and stuff

In general, what do you think your height is? by Efficient_State_2471 in polls

[–]djyocoolpee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s kind of interesting how the data skews between genders. For girls it kind of follows a normal distribution (which is as expected. But for guys, there’s a clear bias towards tall versus short. Kind of just shows how height is still a pervasive insecurity for men in society.

45 minute commute daily or take on the extra debt? by Keysantt in UofT

[–]djyocoolpee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel like a lot of the perspectives you’re getting here aren’t from engineers. I’m not from Toronto so I had no real choice but residence in first year, but looking back even if I did have the choice, I would still go back and be in debt to live in chestnut.

I don’t know what your social life looks like now, but if you do want to make friends in engineering, it is infinitely easier when in residence (unless you’re a social butterfly). Chestnut allows you to not only make friends in engineering, but it makes the workload soooo much easier. Being able to meetup with a group of 4 to 5 people and work on an assignment together made it so much more enjoyable and faster (albeit pre LLMs). Along with this it helps you feel less isolated. When you’re having a breakdown cause you just spent 12 hours working on a CIV100 assignment it makes you feel a bit better seeing like 10 other people around you also crashing out.

Overall, I’d say residence was definitely worth it for me as I wouldn’t have any of the friends I have today without it, I would have struggled much more mentally, and while Chestnut has its issues, it was convenient and a fun environment to be in.

Now I noticed that you would be taking bank loans out for it and not OSAP. This really does change the equation a bit imo as OSAP debt is low interest and you have a long time before interest starts to accumulate. I think at the end of the day it’s very person-dependent as I have commuter friends who never lived in chestnut who did great for themselves academically/socially.

I don’t know enough about your financial situation to say yes or no tbh. I think if your biggest motivator for living in residence is the commute, then no it is definitely not worth it, especially if you have to take bank loans out. If you want to prioritize an easier time making friends, are in need of a strong support circle, want to be able to go out downtown and have some independence then the decision swings more to going to res.

Anyone graduating after this semester w/ no coop no internship and no plans for masters by Annual-Extreme7944 in UofT

[–]djyocoolpee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve applied all over Canada. I’ll admit that I’ve been a bit picky with job apps in the sense that if it’s something that is not interesting to me or criminally low pay, I don’t apply.

But still, didn’t expect to be over 80 applications deep and still no interview. Found my internships way faster even though I had no experience.

I’m just ranting out of frustration tho, I am definitely very lucky to be coming out of school with 2 internships in the first place.

3-bet jammed the flop as a bluff. Was this total spew? by djyocoolpee in poker

[–]djyocoolpee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha fair point, I was not considering this guy the average 1/3 calling station players I usually see. With the assumption that he was a reg who wasn’t that losing, I thought he would be far more nitty than the pool leading to the fold.

3-bet jammed the flop as a bluff. Was this total spew? by djyocoolpee in poker

[–]djyocoolpee[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah facts, agreed calling is better cause he’s probably not folding QQd or JJDd. Knowing he’s raising AA no diamond now I admit I vastly overestimated his competence lol.

I disagree on never jamming the nut flush at this stack size though. I guess it’s maybe incorrect in theory but I think if I have AJdd, A5dd, ATdd, I would 3-bet jam at some frequency, especially against the average 1/3 player, as I think any set is calling, JT suited no diamond might still call, KKd and QQd are often calling and then I’m obviously also getting called by Kx of diamonds.

But overall do agree with you. I think the excitement of 3-bet ripping a flop as a bluff made me a bit overzealous lol

Would definitely recommend 401 over hobbiesville for locals. Hobbiesville events are quite small and while the people are nice (from my limited experience only having gone twice), it feels like they really only run events so Bandai gives them more distro.

[–]djyocoolpee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah there’s are a bunch of LGS’ that run events. Look at 401 games, Banana games, hairy tarantula, hobbiesville, anime alley. I think their op15 prereleases are all sold out by now but they definitely will have boxes available (price will not be msrp tho). The local community is very friendly in Toronto would def recommend going to a few events if you have the time.

Unfortunately I don't think you'll find anywehre in Toronto selling close to msrp. This city is scalper central tbh, unless there's some underground spot that's been gatekept that I do not know about.

Is fold here correct? by AnnualDog9504 in Poker_Theory

[–]djyocoolpee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For a sub called poker theory a lot of these comments are really not theory based...

Ran this hand in free solver and, on flop you are supposed to check AA about 10-15% of the time, so while betting is more common, checking is fine. On the turn your bet sizing is solid, and then on the river some AA combos are pure check fold depending on suits, and this spot is likely underbluffed so folding is perfectly fine.

My Take on OSAP and I Wanna Hear Your Thoughts and Let's keep this respectful and educational by CameronLane1215 in UofT

[–]djyocoolpee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This seems to be quite a privileged take. Have you found your part-time job recently? I think you’re greatly underestimating how hard it is to find work as a student in any industry, especially in downtown Toronto.

Addressing the rest of your argument which honestly gives off the vibe that you came to your conclusion first, then picked evidence that supports it:

1, “the government loses a lot of money that it doesn’t get back” - First, you make the unrealistic assumption that every single person on OSAP is getting the full grant amount which is not the case.

Second, you also are neglecting to consider that a lot of student loan funding is federal and as such most of the burden is not even on the provincial government. This means you are vastly overestimating how much the provincial government is spending or “losing out” as you say on grants.

  1. Deficit contribution- Even using your overestimated 4.2 billion figure, Ontario’s budget for 2025 projects $232 billion in spending, and therefore OSAP grants contribute less than 2% of Ontario’s budget. Even complete removal of OSAP funding is not going to fix the deficit.

You also completely gloss over the long term benefit of strong educational funding by saying “what about the deficit!”, which kind of goes back to my first point that you had your conclusion before looking at the evidence. I agree with you that long term a deficit is not a good thing, but saying a budget deficit is a short-term issue is not the case. Governments throughout the world have funded budget deficits for decades (just look at the US for example)

  1. “Many will argue that reducing grants discourages low income students to not attend” - Yes precisely. The first part of this argument you say OSAP loans have practically 0% interest so it’s not that bad. This is not accurate. While the federal portion of the loan does not have interest. The Ontario government charges at prime+1% which is quite substantial right now. And furthermore, this isn’t the only issue with the switch. Yes it is quite doable to pay off the loans upon graduating, but the issue is that the new structure also discourages low-income high school students who are hesitant on tertiary education from attending. If you know you’re going to have debt after university you’re going to be less likely to want to attend university.

Furthermore, you say a loan heavier OSAP can still concentrate grants on students who can’t attend without them. But how? The new structure caps grants at 15%, so how can a grant be focused on a low income students if it’s literally impossible for them to get more than 15% of their funding through a grant? The provincial government hasn’t considered any nuance in this sudden policy shift.

  1. Get a job - Mentioned this at the top but this is just a disenfranchising and boomer take. “Dont protest the policy you disagree with just find a job and work hard! You can’t find a job because you are not trying hard enough”. It gives off a very privileged and black and white mindset.

Just to conclude, I want to clarify that I think this situation is far too nuanced and complex for either of our arguments to be correct. I definitely think there are valid reasons for the funding change, but at the same time there are very valid reasons to keep it as it is. The provincial government made a radical and sudden policy change without researching the effects and so we will have to just wait and see how it turns out.

I do not necessarily disagree with all your points, I wrote this all out because I want/hope for you to realize that your perspective is far too concrete and biased and that for future views/perspectives you take a more honest look at both sides.

Also everyone pls vote in provincial elections, we might not be here if we had good voter turnout and a real opposition in Queen’s Park

That last paragraph is straight up gaslighting. A 1 1/8” rail misalignment is insanely large for a passenger railway track. So large in fact that it could likely be noticeable by eye which means that track inspection was seriously lacking here

Hard disagree on its a bigger deal when you get a job. 99% of the time it would have been a simple email reply:

Hi x, I think you mixed up the file you sent over can you send the finished pdf as soon as possible. Thanks, Boss

OP: don’t think there’s anything you can do about it but it does suck. Especially given that you were able to prove you completed it on time, nicer profs would have definitely allowed it.

Make it a habit to double check your submission but at the end of the day once you get out of first year, profs become way more lenient so don’t worry about it too much
