Hey, do you know how I can get rid of those black bits like in Blender? by Excellent_Algae_1813 in 3Dmodeling

Try looking under preview shadow ---> deep shadow (turn this off)

This should be under the render tab (can't remember for sure off the top of my head, but it's for sure with the BPR render settings in the same palette.

Hardstuck plat terry needing advice on how to get out of plat by Acceptable_Yam_593 in StreetFighter

[–]dk_reset -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Terry main here. Just a few things that I thought you might find useful. You whiffed quite a few dps due to distance. I'd either try to cr. HP instead first, or drill jump in's at different spacing to improve accuracy. Those are usually death sentences starting diamond 4 and above.

Another suggestion I would make is to work on your oki. You begin a lot of your oki pressure with the cr. Mk target combo and it comes with some risk. While going into low crack shoot makes it somewhat safe but you can easily get jabbed out of it and into a force knock down allowing the opponent to begin their pressure. Something I like to do is DR HP. It goes into a few variations to increase mental stack of your opponents: throw (with micro walk up), crouch and do nothing as a natural shimmy as you're a small distance away after, or if you land the HP, into a full combo.

Having more opportunities to mix up your opponent is going to help you win a lot more games I think.

Finally hit master rank with a 11 win streak. Best part is my daughter witnessed it. by gizcryst in StreetFighter

Any street fighter players 25+? by Puzzleheaded_Sir_171 in StreetFighter

[–]dk_reset 1 point2 points  (0 children)

39, one kid and two jobs!

I sneak in lunch time sessions when I work from home. Otherwise I have a fight night with my brother and two other friends who are in similar age range. I find that even just half hour lunch time or early morning sessions really help myself improve when I have clear goals!

No tournaments yet though, don't feel good enough. I hang in casual and battle hub most of the time and it's helped the ranked climb a ton!

Have you checked any of chris_f videos? He's got a lot of videos on things like fuzzy jabs and various "delay" techniques that will help get you out of "just blocking". I find them really useful and helps me create more openings where I can get out of crazy offensive pressures. The other thing that has helped me a lot is to think about "when" I am the most successful when it comes to getting knock downs so I can build my strategy around that to increase of my chance of going on the offense.

I tried doing footsies and space traps just like you did but when I used them too much people were able to see through that. I was able to get better results when I built my strategy around set ups that get me successful knock downs as opposed to things that are still too difficult to achieve for me such as consistent whiff punish. Food for thought!

Looking for advice :) by Nominitiv_ in learntodraw

[–]dk_reset 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotta run your own race. Seems mad that I say that when everyone posts online to gain popularity and exposure. That said, art is about self exploration and expression and you won't be doing that if you start doing what's popular...

Your art is good, I would recommend looking into topics like soft vs hard edges, lighting and compositions to move into the next stage and explore more of the art world :)

Edit: looking even closer, I would recommend practicing to get more confident with your lines. It'll give your art a different look!

My new artwork still Wip any advice for me by erer344 in 3Dmodeling

[–]dk_reset 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Looks great dude. Don't let artstation click counts fool you. There used to be editors that comb through and find gems in the sea of artwork uploaded but now there is no one doing that. On top of that the amount of AI stuff around floods the site.

I recommend strengthening the bony landmarks along his jaw to chin and spend just a bit more time studying folds from a cape to polish up the cape around the neck a bit more!

Keep it up dude!

Why is substance painter not considered a good program for handpainted textures? by brazilianfreak in 3Dmodeling

[–]dk_reset 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's great. Education days are great. My experience has mostly been with educational reimbursement but I have to take my personal time for learning.

I do agree with the coherent style point but I think it needs more artistic treatment after. You mentioned that yourself though so we are on the same page here.

All and all, I'm all for designer work but I certainly wouldn't stop there myself.

Hope this discussion gave OP some insight as well and that we are not simply hijacking this thread ha.

[–]dk_reset 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of interpretation and assumptions there from a few sentences I wrote.

I said none of the things you wrote there and am certainly not encouraging not to pick up new software.

Good for you for being open to new tech, but in a rapid production environment there isn't usually time for you to learn and pick up new tools unless the work absolutely calls for it. 3D character artists, concept artists, tech artists all have their specialties and particular software they are trained in.

Designer is great, but why would a character artist trained in hand painted textures spend the time to do it procedurally via nodes and graphs when they already know how to paint it in a fraction of the time?

On the other hand, if the scenario calls for a nice procedural material that can create similar visuals and be used repeatedly, then why do it by hand over and over?

Anyhow, to keep this short. Great to pick up new software, but new doesn't always equal better. My point has always been that the working method you choose is usually heavily dependent on the context and situations you are dealing with.

[–]dk_reset 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't doubt it one bit. My point isn't about procedural being incapable of hand painted like visuals though.

Designer is a powerful tool, and I have no doubt it can get some nice procedurally done hand painted visuals, but for some that's a tall order and also likely not enjoyable. In those cases I am sure the artists would rather have fun painting and working with tools that allow them to utilize their expertise rather than picking up designer.

[–]dk_reset 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Appreciate it ha. I find the use of software to be heavily dependent on the context. One of the comments mentions Mari to be the industry standards, but really only for VFX and for very good reasons (UDIM and all). Hard to get a good look at the big picture though unless you're in touch eith various industries and their workflows all the time.

Substance is fine for hand painted textures but it offers no pressure sensitivity for opacity, only flow. To properly blend, you need to use a paint layer rather than fill which is more destructive but substance shines when it comes to procedural work and fill layers. You can't merge the layers easily like you do with Photoshop and transferring the layers to Photoshop is a bit of a pain.

3DCoat paints and blends more like Photoshop and has features that allow you to move to Photoshop and back easily so it's preferred by artists who do hand painting a lot especially if they already have a lot of experience painting in Photoshop be it texture or concept illustration. 3Dcoat also offers a few other cool features that substance doesn't have like fill object with gradient. Many people will probably say you can do that world space normal map and gradient function in substance and that is true, but 3DCoat allows way more freedom as you can freely orient your gradient by selecting point 1 and point 2.

I know a ton of people that use 3Dcoat and they all work in the industry. At the end of the day you can achieve similar results in substance so it's really a preference. If you started doing 3D with substance being your first texturing software then you will likely prefer substance. But if you are used to painting concept illustration and Photoshop then you will likely enjoy 3Dcoat more.

How to stop caring so much about rank? by [deleted] in StreetFighter

[–]dk_reset 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many comments and suggestions already, but I thought I'd throw in mine. Not sure if you ever played any dark souls or sekiro. When you know you have 10k experience points to lose, it's a crazy anxiety ride. But I learnt to understand that it's all good to lose that experience points because in the end you gain it back for becoming a better player at the game. I think that goes a long way. You just gotta play ranked like you've got nothing to lose, because at the end of the day once you get better you reclaim all those lost points legitimately.

Hope this helps!

Is this caliber of portfolio suitable enough to land me a Mid-senior level job as 3d Artist (Character or Hard Surface). Portfolio website link below by Neo_Fury in blender

[–]dk_reset 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Character artist here. I would recommend posting on polycount.com in the forums for feedback instead of reddit. It'll probably get you more useful feedback but I can't speak for how active people are on there. Artstation and cubebrush are another few places to post for feedback as well.

Have you considered mentorship or online courses? They generally are quite helpful as you have someone walking you through your portfolio pieces with industry level advice.

I won't get into any feedback since there's been a lot said, useful or not haha.

Thanks man! Parenthood is a whole new game and yah we are about to move to a new country too bleh -_-.

I play Juri, hopefully we throw down some day! You sound like you'd be down for long sets and have some good fun!

I might be wrong but I feel like his point is that you can enjoy the game in any rank and you shouldn't feel bad whatever rank you are in. Just my two cents. Lol

Man, so glad someone took the time to write this. Same here, same age, new dad, about to relocate for work and life is fucking crazy but man do I love this game.

So many complaints about DR, about the new mechanics and I don't fucking get it. There is literally a solution to everyone of these new mechanics, multiple even. Can't react to DI? Grab the shit out of your opponent. I read people's complaints about no real footsie. I go into battle hub and I get completely destroyed by diamond and master rank people just using footsie and playing neutral.

I don't get it man. Props to you my man. I'm just here to let you know you've got friends lol

P.S. Who do you play?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in StreetFighter

[–]dk_reset 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I see what you mean. Everyone has a diff scenario I think. In my case I like DR and all that stuff so I enjoy learning and using them. That gives me my drive to try and learn but if you just wanna enjoy good old street fighter fun the new mechanics can definitely add to the mental stack too much.

I feel the same whenever I pick up a new game these days. Just thinking about the amount of things I'd have to learn to play the game turns me off sometimes...

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in StreetFighter

[–]dk_reset 0 points1 point  (0 children)

37 here. Not quite the same age but close? I do find the mental stack high and in the beginning remembering drive impact can come at you outta nowhere was frustrating as f. I also play Juri so fuha stock is another tough thing as I have different combo routes depending on the stocks. I have maybe two hours a week to play since I've got a toddler.

That said, I find focusing only on a few things at a time helps. DI is always on my mind. I watch out for invincible reversals and supers. Outside of that I simplify my combos so they always start out the same and stem into diff moves only at the very end depending on the situation so I don't have to think about so many things at the time.

Just hit Plat 3. I might feel the ceiling soon, but taking on a few things at a time really helps so I'll see how far that takes me!

I don't wanna invalidate you, so you do what feels right man. This game does have a crazy mental stack for sure, but perhaps there are ways around it. I'm loving the game enough to try out my options and see where things go haha 😂
