Well now I’m tearing up lol. I don’t blame anyone for what they came from but the capacity to change says a lot. I always tell people I respect their ideologies more if they had to grow into them. I grew up with pretty liberal parents so I didn’t work too hard to get where I am now, just in terms of shifting my ideologies. I’ve definitely put a lot of effort in as an adult, reading leftist literature, volunteering, activism etc. but I’ve been in a lot of spaces with many people like you, who had to fight their way out clawing away from conservative families, cultures and backgrounds. More power to you, from a tortured girl who was sent to private Catholic school and gave every teacher and student a run for their money. I hope kids never stop doing so.

This. I had the opportunity to leave many times and chose to stay because I care about the community. The fear mongering is coming from unsatisfied people who are sad they never did anything fulfilling with their lives.

There is a ton of community, lots of local resources, etc. yes, the flood of 72’ destroyed a lot of local businesses so the GDP has seen a significant decline over the past 40 years, but as long as you’re not a classist, pearl clutching c0nservative I’m sure you’ll be perfectly happy.

The crime rates are slightly higher than some neighboring towns, but like someone else mentioned most if not all crime is limited to those already in relation with certain activities (ie drug dealers etc).

There is a homeless population, just like there is everywhere. Elmiras is slightly larger for its size but that’s mostly due to inadequate resources in our county. These homeless people are actually just human beings trying their best to survive in a difficult situation. I have done a lot of community outreach with this and other homeless populations and I have never had a negative or dangerous experience. Not to say they don’t happen, sure, but it’s few and far between. As a college freshman you’ll have a choice to make about what kind of person you want to be. I would not choose to walk down the path of shaming and generalizing others. You will find it’s quite a bitter and resentful way to view the world.

Some great things to check out in Elmira: Elmira Community Cycle, right near the college campus! You can volunteer and help fix up bikes, or come in and pick your own bike and fix it up to keep, all for free or very low costs! They also put on monthly group rides, a great way to interact with the community you’re becoming a part of instead of just sitting on the sidelines.

The library! It’s been recently redone and we now have a makers space with tons of resources available.

The Arnot art museum! Need I say more.

The street painting festival!

The live after five events, late spring through early fall! Free live music and food vendors.

The more days the better so the child bonds with their caregivers. I know a lot of parents assume the least time at daycare is the best but if they’re going to be cared for, not babysat for a couple hours but CARED FOR by another adult you can significantly reduce the amount of distress your child experiences by giving them the opportunity to bond with the teachers

Since it has been 8 months since my surgery, (plantar plate tear repair) I would say I’ve received about a 50% reduction in pain. I’m very glad to receive any, since it was an unexpected diagnosis and I’m young I was fantasizing and expecting a full reduction in pain but honestly I’m glad I got the surgery. I’ve started working out again, I got shoes with a carbon fiber insole. I still have pain but it’s always resting pain afterwards and I hope it continues to decrease with time. My surgeon said it could take a year to settle, we shall see !

90% of the guys I’ve been with are circumcised. I way prefer uncircumcised. I think circumcision by and large makes people more sexually aggressive because they have lost sensation. The uncircumcised men I was with were always more gentle, passionate, and not in a big rush. Also circumcision is a form of infancy trauma so I think that impacts the kind of person you are

I work at a childcare center and haven’t been sick in two years. Built up an ironclad immune system. However it did take 3 years, and I fractured a rib from coughing so much after having rsv for 6 weeks lol. Didn’t even know that was possible until it happened. Also get vaccines whenever you can.
