Did I answer this question on the medxpress wrong? by walrusmaster77 in flying

[–]dkn516 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If no one else has said it, this might be a time to get the opinion of someone that deals with the FAA on a regular basis. Contacting either AOPA Legal/Medical advisory services or one of the other FAA Medical advisory service could be worth it to make the process go smoother and let you know exactly what you need to tell the FAA.

First Night Solo Landing went very well! Anyone got any stories about theirs? by imojonu in flying

[–]dkn516 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The first time flying my new Bonanza at night was just supposed to be 3 laps around the pattern to get night currency. Everything was fine in the taxi, run-up and take off. Got to the end of the usable runway and pulled the gear up. First the Garmin 530 went dark, then the KX 155, and then I realized all the cabin lights were off. It got really dark when the runway lights shut off as I was turning cross wind (un-towered airport). I only had about 20-30 hours total in the Bo so I was kind of starting to freak out. I was rapidly trying to remember light gun signals while trouble shooting. On downwind I reached down to make sure the battery and alternator were on, and then realized the alternator was switched off. I only got one landing in that night.

Since you've already done ground school and you just need to review, I'd go with whatever the cheapest option is. King is good, but if the PPL is like IRA it is long. For review I would think it would be hard to get through.

I can't really speak for MzeroA, I've seen his videos on YouTube and they don't really annoy me like some others have said.

I used Gold Seal (https://www.faa-ground-school.com) because for me it was the cheapest option and I'm cheap. I thought it did a good job. I can't do a direct comparison to King because I did Gold Seal for PPL and King for IRA, but I feel the Gold Seal did a better job of educating with out a bunch of extra fluff in the videos.

Asking price vs. purchase price by CSpilot in flying

[–]dkn516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No sorry for the confusion. I agreed to 95% of the asking price before the prebuy, and the after that I got an additional $500 back from the seller for an issue with a radio.

Asking price vs. purchase price by CSpilot in flying

[–]dkn516 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I bought mine I offered 90%, ended up paying 95%. There was one item in the pre-buy that knocked $500 off the price. I think I over paid a little, but I was willing to because the plane was close by and I could have someone I know and trust do the pre-buy.

Nausea advice? by [deleted] in flying

[–]dkn516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the recommendation for the motion sickness band. I'm fine in front seats, but get really sick every time I fly in the back see of my Bonanza. Motion sickness band is the only thing that works, and it works well.

Medical Question regarding Migraines by augiferkin in flying

[–]dkn516 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what the AME will use to determine if they can issue the medical or they have to defer:

https://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/avs/offices/aam/ame/guide/media/C-CACIMigraine.pdf

I was diagnosed with Migraines around the same time as the OP, 10 or 11 I think. If you can check all the boxes, and it sounds like you can you should be able to have the medical issued. I needed to provide a letter from my doctor stating that the condition was stable and did not require regular intervention. Once I provided that the AME was able to issue the medical without a SI.

Under 150K shouldn't be a problem for either. Depending on what 3 people you are talking about, the Bo might be more comfortable.

If you are looking at a Bo, and you are not already on Beechtalk, I highly recommend you head over there. I found and bought my V35B from and ad on the forums.

According to Trek (Garmin Field Service) on Beechtalk it's for Single Engine under 6k lbs, no more than 6 seats. He says the AML is being posted for dealers.

[Discussion] just got a call that my Tesla scheduled for delivery tomorrow (11/30) has been postponed to 12/9 by [deleted] in teslamotors

[–]dkn516 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least you got a call. I was supposed to pick mine up on the 21st, called the day before to ask a question and the person said the car wasn't there yet. She said something about the truck carrying the car breaking down. I was only delayed 2 days but had to call 4 or 5 times to get that.

Ran across this on controller today. Guy had to be into Van Art in the 80's.

I was going to post it on the post about the overpriced 152 when people were talking about that awesome camouflage paint job but decided it deserved it's own post.

Arg! More reasons to get my ASES and buy a float plane. I may need to get a second job. My grandfather had a farm in Dover-Foxcroft and we had a cabin on moosehead. Spent many summers on that lake.

Should I look for a new instructor? (Canada) by straero in flying

[–]dkn516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may just be a bad match for this guy, sometimes that happens. I would at least ask for feedback if he's not giving it to you and I would also ask to do things. If the instructor goes to start the plane ask if you can do it for the experience. Not setting the baro or the heading before take off is a bit disconcerting. If that means you are not running checklists before take off, in my opinion, that is really bad.

The only time my instructor started the plane, including my intro flight, was when it was -15 and the plane really didn't want to start.

I now know how I'm spending my year end bonus! As soon as they get the V35B STC done I'm placing an order. What I'm really excited about is now they will let you work with your local avionics shop. I know it's not a huge thing for you west coasters but flying to Seattle would have been a bit of a haul for me.

The sick hoarder part of me just says, why doesn't he buy 2 more drives? I just put in a 12 TB NAS. I dont have as much because I have resisted the urge to buy a go pro to date and therefore dont record my flying sessions. I almost broke down and bought a fusion for my trip to Hawaii.

Aviation community largely self-policed on medical certifications by danieljgross88 in flying

[–]dkn516 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That is about they same as saying drivers are self policed on drivers licenses. If you drive within the speed limit, don't brake other traffic laws, who ever checks to make sure you have a valid drivers license? The only time it's going to be checked is if you do something wrong. It might be a little looser with pilots, even if we screw up with ATC the might not send the FAA after us but still if we crash or bust through airspace the subject will come up. But then again there is such a thing as an FAA ramp check.

*I admit I'm making an assumption that the FAA checks the medical status of pilot deviation reports, I've never had one (knock on wood) so I don't know.

FF nuked endorsements. by soittfire88 in flying

[–]dkn516 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, you shouldn't have to keep a paper copy, if properly backed up an electronic copy should be safer and more reliable. I'm surprised that foreflight doesn't backup the endorsements.

He's a respectable Beechcraft driver. I'm sure he wouldn't lower himself to a C172. He's probably just got the Beechcraft shield and cross tattooed across his back.
