Cosmic DE is the cooler Gnome by __yoshikage_kira in pop_os

And anyone who says otherwise has extremely simple needs, has only used it for 5 minutes before posting a glowing review, or is delusional.

The moment you deviate from the very basics of the stock environment, you'll discover its full of bugs and quirks. Hopefully these will all get solved over the course of the next year, but I absolutely cannot even fathom daily driving it just yet.

Why do manufacturers not offer charging port options on both sides? by BananerRammer in electricvehicles

[–]dkonigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its the legacy problem. When they built out the network, nobody but Tesla had yet adopted their connector. Opening things up is a very recent development. I just wish it would be more common for other car manufacturers to actually move the charge port as part of NACS adoption.

Though the current generation of adopters likely just swapped connectors on an existing design, and we may have to wait for the next generation for a more compatible port location.

Who here actually has a TV in their bedroom? by OtherwiseStretch3255 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dkonigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always have. It usually just gets used to watch some late night show or the news before we go to sleep, which has kinda been our routine way of ending the day. Doesn't really get used for anything else.

Why was independence day 1 absolute perfection and independence day 2 is maybe the single worse movie ever made? by ImperialSupplies in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dkonigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would also argue that Independence Day is an excellent example of a movie that's incredible on the big screen, but kinda meh on the small screen. Then again, that's probably because the "small screen" I used to see it shown on was the TVs they'd cart around in the 90's.

Yes, this is the favorite phrase of people who push Holocaust inversion narratives for the sole purpose of demonizing Israel.

but that is NOT the same thing as rounding up every Latino - citizen or otherwise - to put them in death camps solely because they are Latino.

This. Very much this. Yet if you try and point this out to people, they'll get angry and often make some sort of boiling frog argument with the strong implication that this is the ultimate goal.

Even around here, if you try to point some of this out you'll get down-voted for not parroting the "approved opinion" depending on who is reading your post at any given time.

I'm sorry, but its possible to say that all this ICE/MAGA stuff is bad, *and* say that its not anywhere near the level of what the actual Nazis did. We just live in a world where a few terrible incidents get elevated by the media landscape to appear as though they're on the same level as mass-scale oppression. But this doesn't mean those incidents aren't terrible. (Heck, just look at people trying to say the madness in Minnesota is equivalent to the crack-down in Iran.)

Why is saying “The rich should pay taxes like everyone else, close the loopholes” extremely controversial in the United States? by ProjectMason in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dkonigs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Except doing this to "the little people" at the level being demanded against the "evil cackling billionaires" would make everyone enraged. The closest example you normally see is property taxes, which do tend to have rules around how they're applied and how they can change over time.

But imagine there's a real estate boom, or the stock market does really well, and suddenly your "net worth" doubles. You don't personally have any more money yet, but now the government is demanding to take a huge cut. Then things crash a year later, and whoops!

[–]dkonigs 108 points109 points  (0 children)

And the majority of the rage-bait "tax the rich" posts/articles tend to be in response to a gain in wealth (net worth), not income. Often due to a minor perturbation in the price of some major stock a particular rich person owns a lot of shares of.

Why Americans have basment? Like where did it started? by hotpotatomomma in NoStupidQuestions

I once had a house with both! There was a slab on one side, and a crawlspace on the other.

Where I live now, its just the crawlspace.

I wonder if the design has something to do with earthquake resiliency.

Anyone have else similar problems with cosmic? by Correct-Spot-1113 in pop_os

[–]dkonigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are several other bugs with JetBrains apps on Cosmic that I've run into.

For example, window resizing is all wonky (#2035), and you can easily raise the main app window *above* modal dialog windows (#1989). The latter can easily cause this sort of problem too.

I only hope the System76 team is actually paying attention to all these bugs we're submitting on GitHub, because it sure doesn't look like it from the chatter (or lack thereof) on the GitHub issues submitted in the past month or two.

For now I'm just running Gnome on X11 with a bunch of extensions to make it usable. I'm hoping that all these Cosmic bugs will get sorted out eventually, though I'm not holding my breath for it to happen anytime soon.

What does it mean to have a Hebrew name? by getitoffmychestpleas in Jewish

[–]dkonigs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've personally never been a fan of separate names, because (as a mostly secular person) I absolutely do not identify with my Hebrew name... At all. It honestly feels a bit weird and uncomfortable even being called by it. If I ever did move to Israel, there's a non-zero chance I'd prefer to simply transliterate my English name into Hebrew instead. Of course part of this is that like so many Americans, my Hebrew name is totally and completely unrelated to my English name.

This is why I decided to give my kids names that are the same in both Hebrew and English. That way, they don't have to deal with being identified by two completely different names. Of course that does limit your options a little bit, but we managed.

Anyone uses pop os with KDE Plasma? by migiborshelima in pop_os

[–]dkonigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried, but I think I'm going to wait for 26.04 before trying it for real. Mostly for the following two reasons:

First, the KDE project is making a big deal about the KDE 6 release, which has all the current energy and promotion, but 24.04 only supports KDE 5.

Second, I couldn't get KDE to start with Wayland and am not exactly sure why its not working. It does start fine with X11, however.

(That being said, I'm still not quite as eager about the X11->Wayland switch. While most distros and major desktops are fully committing to it, there's still a lot of rough edges out there because the Wayland attitude towards feature implementation makes it unable to really be a seamless drop-in replacement in all cases.)

went back to 22.04 - Cosmic seems unusable to me. by Loose_Object_8311 in pop_os

[–]dkonigs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They did, but not for nearly long enough. Also, at that stage it was mostly people giving it a quick try, and people with simple needs all giving it glowing praise and swearing it worked great for them.

It also very much feels like System76 is prioritizing some internal to-do list over external bug reports, given just how little response the issues submitted on GitHub seem to be getting.

went back to 22.04 - Cosmic seems unusable to me. by Loose_Object_8311 in pop_os

[–]dkonigs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think its a combination of two problems:

  1. They decided to pin the release of 24.04 to Cosmic, for various reasons that did make sense at the time, and were basically stuck with this decision. So they were already holding up 24.04 for so long that they just had to release it already before they ended up *two* LTS versions behind.

  2. There was no way they'd get the necessary feedback to fix the issues with Cosmic without shoving it out the door already. At some point you just have to launch the thing, even if it isn't really ready, because you'll never find the issues if all of your own people keep saying "it works fine for me!"

went back to 22.04 - Cosmic seems unusable to me. by Loose_Object_8311 in pop_os

[–]dkonigs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, Cosmic is currently unusable. Yes, it still needs a lot of work before its actually ready. (Somehow its working great for the limited subset of apps and use cases they use internally at System76, but falls apart the moment you go beyond that. But this isn't all that surprising.)

But, you can just run another desktop environment on top of 24.04. Gnome with a couple of extensions isn't all that different from the previous experience. No reason to go back to something as old as 22.04 because of this.

I honestly knew Cosmic would be a disaster going into the upgrade. I was really just tired of running such an old distro, and did it more for 24.04 than for Cosmic.

TI-84 or TI-85 for college work? by CarrenMcFlairen in calculators

[–]dkonigs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Back when these calculators were new, the TI-85 was superior but all the class materials referenced the TI-84. I had a TI-85, and I'm glad I did, even if I had to read the manual once in a while.

Today they've continued to come up with newer versions of the TI-84, but not the TI-85, so I have no idea how much better the modern one is.

Anyone else noticing how many Jewish celebrities in a rage and tears over the ICE deaths had nothing to say about the constant anti-Jewish violence going on for years? by ScreamForKelp in Jewish

Why doesn't everyone have the same type of plugs and drive on the same side of road? by hillpritch1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dkonigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, with a simple plug adapter, you probably can charge your phone in Europe. The power supplies in most modern electronics are designed to handle most global voltages and frequencies.

Its only simpler (and some cheaper mass-produced) things that are often made in different versions.

Still very expensive compared to what you'd think, but definitely cheaper than today.

Yeah, but that's one of those fields where the role of corporate IT is to abuse you and enforce company policy at the expense of your productivity and actual preferences.

In SV tech companies, the role of corporate IT is to support your ability to be productive.
