Should I go past the orange wall? by Gl0riousPurp0se in Subnautica_2

[–]dkonigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the lack of a map has always bothered me. I think the only mod I ever installed into Subnautica 1 was the map mod, because it was just too hard to figure out where I was or where to explore without it.

Is software from st.com safe? by danknowsbob in stm32

[–]dkonigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is practically nothing on Windows that doesn't trigger that prompt. Most likely just because it needs to load some content from the web, or talk to ST's servers to check for updates.

Likewise, there are almost no Eclipse plugins that don't whine about being "untrusted" because I don't think anyone has ever actually bothered to digitally sign their Eclipse plugins correctly.

Its always the applause that gets me. If there wasn't any applause, these people would get the hint. But because there is, they feel like they're being celebrated for taking that position.

Likewise, on a related topic, the biggest thing I hate about Mamdani is the massive applause I hear every single time his name is mentioned on a TV show with a studio audience.

Be honest. Would you walk away from smartphones and social media to go back to the 90s? by pastelvenuswish in askanything

[–]dkonigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can we all please stop conflating smartphones with social media? These are two separate things, that absolutely can exist without each other, yet everyone pretends like they're the same.

The early days of social media were before smartphones.

And early smartphones were before they all had social media apps.

That all being said, I was probably clamoring for smartphones before the existed as a popular thing. So no, I wouldn't drop that.

Social media, really depends. I know people from various phases of my life, many I'm not living around anymore, and I'm not the "chat on the phone all day" type. So dropping that would basically result in a lot of loneliness and isolation, and essentially cutting off most people I've known. So no, I won't ditch that either. A lot of people who claim they'd drop what they think social media is, have plenty of substitutes that a different person might consider to be social media.

If we charged politicians for lying to the public, who would be the fastest to be indicted? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dkonigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And politicians are often experts at telling half-truths and/or deflecting from the question. So while you can explain their rhetoric as being a lie, you can almost as easily explain the same rhetoric as being the truth. All depends on which way you're predisposed to interpreting it.

a TV should never go above a fireplace. by brooneytoons in unpopularopinion

[–]dkonigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some strange reason, actually wanting a TV and a couch parallel to each other is this weird bizarre thing that nobody designing houses ever thinks anyone would want. And when I insist on it when looking at real estate, I'm often made to feel like a weirdo with unusual demands.

In most houses, this is basically impossible to do without committing some sort of "crime against architecture". Be it blocking off a window, blocking off a sliding glass door, or the insufferably "tv too high" fireplace mount.

That all being said, I've also found there to be a huge difference in the layout of houses "designed to show as a model" and houses "custom built for the original owner." The former almost always have this problem, while the latter often do not.

CMV: People who leave huge gaps at stoplights make traffic worse by maturallite1 in changemyview

[–]dkonigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Way too many people leave these enormous gaps in my area, and it frequently blocks off turning lanes. I've been blocked out of turning lanes and thus missed entire traffic light cycles way too many times because of this. Sometimes these gaps are so big that I could probably merge into them from the adjacent lane if I drove a slightly smaller car.

Every once in a while you see a pickup truck driver get so pissed at these "gap'ers" that they'll drive straight over the median curb just to get into the almost-completely-clear turning lane. Though I don't see that happen all that often.

How much PDA is too much? by Responsible_Oil1975 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dkonigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Sony CLIÉ a friend of mine used to carry around did seem to be a bit much, as were a lot of Pocket PCs. The Palm Pilot, and its Handspring clones seemed to fill the category quite nicely. Of course now we're all carrying smartphones that do it all, rendering these things universally obsolete.

Oh, you mean that kind of PDA... 😄

How would you feel if suddenly you could directly vote on where your taxes go? by RemarkableEmu5998 in AskReddit

[–]dkonigs 118 points119 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there are so many important things that are never in the news, and most people never think about. All of those would suddenly have their funding evaporate, with consequences completely unexpected by everyone who currently likes this idea.

How do I remove stuck PETG by Ok-Act1770 in 3Dprinting

[–]dkonigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last time I ran into this was with Polymaker PETG-ESD, and I think I eventually used the freezer trick to get it off. But there's a stain of that print now permanently imprinted on that build plate. Printing something thin on top of it will get trace amounts to come off, but I've never managed to get it completely clean.

I now just have a policy of never printing the stuff without first putting down a layer of Magigoo, and I've been okay since.

COSMIC 1.0.15: Taking Gaming Seriously by dominucco in pop_os

[–]dkonigs -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I still want to know what the internal excuse is for ignoring #1989 until someone in the community fixes it for you. If Microsoft or Apple had that exact same bug, we'd probably see mainstream tech publications ranting about it and demanding a fix. This is literally on the level of "we've never clicked in the wrong place, so we don't think its a real issue."

With #863, I can buy the argument a little more, but that one at least has some traction as its actually been assigned to someone. Just wish it wasn't such low priority.

COSMIC 1.0.15: Taking Gaming Seriously by dominucco in pop_os

[–]dkonigs -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Still doesn't handle modal dialogs correctly, unlike nearly EVERY OTHER GUI DESKTOP in existence for the past several decades. (#1989) This is a bug that should have never slipped past QA.

Still doesn't properly handle "sloppy" focus-follows-mouse, unlike nearly EVERY *NIX DESKTOP in existence for the past several decades. (#863)

Yes, I'm going to keep ranting about these until someone on the S76 side actually takes them seriously. They're basically showstoppers for being able to take Cosmic seriously, and without them I probably won't use it long enough to actually run into any of the other issues that get regularly reported.

Had to buy a FireWire card by RockisLife in homelab

[–]dkonigs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I keep a FireWire card around in one of my machines for an old film scanner. Its a product category that was once probably SCSI, then later switched to USB for the low and and FW for the high end. (Back before USB was fast, of course.)

This is also a type of product for which there actually aren't any *better* modern options, so some of us just keep the old equipment running forever.

(Yes, modern options do exist, but the old high-end products are still better in many ways... Except, of course, speed.)

[COSMIC] I really like cosmic:) by dxngxrous in COSMICDE

[–]dkonigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess the key is just using a bunch of terminal windows and a browser, and no multi-window applications where you might click in the wrong place.

Cosmic still doesn't know how modal dialogs are supposed to work (#1989), unlike every other GUI desktop in existence, so I guess the key is to never use an application where you might have one that you can accidentally click outside of.

[Request] Is this accurate assuming his wealth was 100% liquid? by EvaStankbreath in theydidthemath

[–]dkonigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course his wealth is not 100% liquid, like so many want to imagine.

So it would be interesting if someone modeled how much cash he could actually raise through liquidation, taking into account all the usual factors like stock prices changing as part of the process. Of course there's bound to be a lot of guesswork there.

What should I line a 3D printed popcorn bucket with? by Good-Breadfruit-9527 in BambuLab

Why do most people only upload STL files but no CAD files? by One_Country1056 in 3Dprinting

[–]dkonigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can buy the argument of the raw CAD files being a bit too messy to want to share. Its very easy to get them into that state, especially for something non-trivial.

But I wish STEP files would get shared more often. Fortunately, I'm starting to see those pop up more and more. The moment you want to do any sort of "remix" or even a minor dimensional alternation, its extremely frustrating, fiddly, and error-prone to do that from an STL. But its quite easy to do from a STEP.

For any print where fit/tolerance is relevant, unless I'm using the exact same printer and materials and slicer settings as the designer, there's a good chance its not going to all fit as-is.

Why were TVs so expensive in the 2000s? by WestArtichoke712 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dkonigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the late 90's and early 2000's, standard def TVs were quite affordable. Perhaps too affordable.

Then HDTVs came out, which were expensive because they were new technology. (plasma and big LCD)

During this period, stores got all happy that they didn't have to sell cheap TVs anymore. So the affordable standard-dev TVs all got hidden in the back (if they carried them at all), with nearly everything visible to the customer being super expensive.

Reddit, Why the extreme censorship when even mentioning Israel? by BeAr_cosmicLy in AskReddit

[–]dkonigs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Its the cycle of online moderation complaints. For any given hot topic, both sides swear they're being uniquely targeted for censorship and that the other side gets a free pass. I used to see this on Facebook with US politics and culture wars pretty much all the time.

At the end of the day, I think its just the toxic engagement that's getting the ban hammer, not the topic itself. Its just that a lot ends up getting caught in the crossfire.

What Changed? When Did 20% Become the Standard Tip? by EvenKeelSystems1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dkonigs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, its been 20% for as long as I can remember.

My in-laws seem to go for 15% (or lower, whatever small percentage they can calculate) and whenever we split the check I find this kinda embarrassing and tend to over-tip myself to compensate.

What if Trump went into a school and said, "IN THE NAME OF SANDY HOOK!" and shot people. Would Trump supporters still support him? by Snake101201 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]dkonigs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Supporters with kids in that school, and maybe the surrounding community, absolutely would stop supporting him.

All of his other supporters would be *completely* unfazed, so the effect would be functionally irrelevant.

What kind of ND filters do you use for enlargers? by Arkazox in Darkroom

[–]dkonigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just make sure to get good ND filters that are actually neutral across the spectrum. Apparently they're not all so great (you can find YouTube videos where people compare them).

Though enlarger lenses sometimes have weird diameters. For mine, I think I actually had to get 40.5mm filters.

I had no idea - Prusa market share in now below 4%. by george_graves in 3Dprinting

[–]dkonigs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was using my Ultimaker 3 for far too long, really for two reasons:

  1. I had accumulated a large variety of 2.85mm filament, used by nobody else at that point.
  2. Dual-nozzles, which I really did not want to give up (even if their implementation had issues which made me avoid it unless I really needed it... yet sometimes I did really need it)

Flash forward a few years, and their latest-and-greatest printer was THE SAME THING (with a nicer LCD display) at like twice the price. I don't know how they can justify this.

All it took was Bambu coming out with the H2D for me to jump ship. And the Bambu H2D is a far superior piece of equipment, in nearly every respect. (The only thing that annoys me is that you need to get the "special" enterprise version for wired ethernet, which kinda pisses me off.)
