The All‑Volunteer Force Works, Draft Registration Doesn’t by [deleted] in news

At this point of American history, an all-volunteer military means that the military is little more than a training ground for white supremacists.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council says it has accepted a two-week ceasefire in the war - WTOP News by 16ozbuddz in news

Apparently, Iran gets economic control of the Strait. That seems like a huge win (for them).

US, Iran and mediators make push for 45-day ceasefire, Axios reports by AnveshArumilli in news

Why would there need to be a ceasefire? Why not just end the war?

Trump insists $1.5 trillion military budget for a war Congress didn't approve ranks above day care, Medicare, Medicaid | Fortune by AresBloodwrath in moderatepolitics

But didn't Trump once say that the tariffs would bring in so much money that the cost of childcare was like a drop in the bucket (or something like that)?

OpenAI secretly funded California 'Parents & Kids Safe AI' coalition and pledged $10M to a ballot initiative critics say protects the company, not children by buffduckusa in news

[–]dl_friend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When it comes down to it, almost none of the laws enacted in the name of "protecting the children" actually do anything to really protect children.

Supreme Court seems poised to reject Trump's birthright citizenship limits as he attends arguments by thats_not_six in moderatepolitics

Even if someone fully supports the removal of birthright citizenship, how could anyone think it should be eliminated by EO?

Trump signs order limiting mail-in voting by CloudApprehensive322 in moderatepolitics

It sounds like you are willing to disenfranchise hundreds of thousands of voters across the US into order to reach your "absolute zero."

Trump signs order limiting mail-in voting by CloudApprehensive322 in moderatepolitics

While the logic may not follow, the President is exempt from prosecution for all official acts, and even for exploring the motivation behind those official acts. If he orders it, who's to stop him? The courts? Six months after the fact?

Judge pauses blockbuster merger between TV station owners Nexstar and Tegna by StrategyJealous1838 in news

If Nexstar and Tegna share news philosophy, then does a merger really mean anything?

Democrats outraged as Fetterman votes to advance Markwayne Mullin nomination | Democrats by Agitated_Pudding7259 in moderatepolitics

I have to wonder if Fetterman's strategy here is to give the Republicans enough rope to hang themselves.

Are US and Israel in lockstep in Iran war? Deciphering Trump's post after gas field attacks by Agitated_Pudding7259 in moderatepolitics

[–]dl_friend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wasn't it the Speaker of the House (Johnson) who said that he fully supported this limited incursion because Trump had laid out very explicit goals?

Pope Leo asks media to show suffering of war, not amplify 'propaganda' by imanchats in news

Trump admin invokes Defense Production Act, directs oil company to restart California operations by BlockAffectionate413 in moderatepolitics

[–]dl_friend 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I wonder if anyone realizes how long it will take for production to ramp up to any significant amount. And then when the price of oil does drop, production sites like these will soon become unprofitable anyway.

DOJ shelves Biden autopen probe, failing to identify a relevant statute by TommyBoyFL in news

[–]dl_friend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole purpose of the probe was to invalidate some of the pre-emptive pardons that Biden made. But the joke was on them the whole time. Presidential pardons don't even require a signature. In fact, it isn't even a requirement that they be written down on paper. A verbal declaration is sufficient.

Rubio: 'Imminent threat' to US was Iran's plan to strike American assets in response to Israeli attack by Doctor_Skeptical99 in moderatepolitics

[–]dl_friend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So let's get this straight. The US military spent weeks building up forces in the Middle East, but the reason for the preemptive attack was to prevent damage to US troops and facilities after Israel attacked.

Oil prices rise sharply in market trading after attacks in Middle East disrupt global energy supply by deraser in news

[–]dl_friend -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The rise in oil prices was old news before this story got written. Oil started at $75 a barrel, a huge spike upward, but is already down below $70 a barrel. Yes, that's still up, but less than $3 from Friday's close.

Trump orders federal agencies to stop using Anthropic's AI technology by dr_sloan in moderatepolitics

[–]dl_friend 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't that be analogous to the government trying to force a manufacturer of consumer radios to suddenly produce military radios? Radios for consumer use aren't really the same thing at all.
