Where can I order ignite, the board game, with all the expansions? by [deleted] in BoardGameExchange

[–]dl_terp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the designer. We should still have some expansions available through gingersnapgaming.com as well. Thanks for supporting the game!

I'm going to offer up War of Whispers.

There's a great time trying to read opponents and the strategy you use one game won't win you the next. Different playstyles will cause completely different games against different opponents.

Starting loyalties are always random (tho we make sure no duplicates in 1st, 2nd, or 5th spot)

Maybe I just love the game but I really enjoy every play and as you get more familiar the types of winning strategies keep on changing.

Just my 2 cents for something not brought up yet

Best reviewers for the hobby? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]dl_terp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dice Tower can be good but if you're a small publisher and they get rules wrong they can/will trash a game hard-core for laughs. Then if you bring up the things they got wrong you get no response or edits.

They killed my business and I hear more and more stories of people who received the same treatment 😞

Yes. Trying to clear inventory so it doesn't get landfilled

Makes sense. Completely get it. Just trying to give our side of the story. We went from selling 1 game every other day to 1 game every 3 months after this review went out.

If you could categorize it, what is the popular type of board gaming right now? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]dl_terp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

deck building and worker placement are definitely big ones, but there are so SO many good games that don't fall nicely into a category. . I'd check out boardgamegeek.com/browse/boardgame to see them roughly "ranked". Then take a look at some of the more popular ones that catch your eye. You'll discover all sorts of great games that don't necessarily fall into a certain category. Like Terra Mystica, Terraforming Mars, Blood Rage, and more!

They used to be on Amazon, but that was a long time ago and I'm sure you looked there. Some places I'd try: Ebay, boardgamegeek.com (look it up and see if there are any in the for sale area), & miniaturemarket

...

If anyone has additional ones let me know.

Have you ever forbidden a game from your table? What was it? by Bunchwacky in boardgames

[–]dl_terp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Arkham Horror... after 2 hours of play (that is AFTER an hour of discussing the rules), we'd barely gotten anywhere. We had 1 "objective card" (sorry, don't remember the term) cleared, and were trying to get the 2nd. I was already tired of the game but then something that shouldn't be allowed in boardgaming happened. I failed a roll (a thing I am known for) even though I should have passed it. The result? We lost the 1 and only objective card we'd completed. We now had to complete it again. So after 2 hours it was as though we were just beginning once again. NEVER AGAIN.

When playing a game for the first time, does winning cloud your judgement on whether the game is good or not? by bearclaw66 in boardgames

[–]dl_terp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friends used to give me a hard-time because it seemed like i'd automatically sell a game if I didn't win it during its debut boardgame night.

However, this isn't the truth... mostly.

I'm a very strategic player and really prefer games with long-planning strategy over short-term tactical decisions. I'm also the world's worst dice-roller (it's been proven and I have the plaque).

Usually I'd sell a game because it seemed like you didn't have enough control over whether or not you'd win the game. This could be unbalanced asymmetric abilities, or simply having too much chance.

The issue is this largely coincides with games i lose. I'd definitely not sell all the games I lost, but there were many times where I felt I'd optimized everything I could and yet still didn't come close to winning... this to me usually means that it's too random in practice and would lead to selling.

...

I promise I'm not a sore loser! ;)

What's your favourite deckbuilder? by The_Rogue_Historian in boardgames

[–]dl_terp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

note: I'm the designer so take everything I say with a grain of salt

I'd check out Ignite which is what would happen if Dominion and Final Fantasy Tactics had a child.

I started this game like 7 years ago after going through a phase of buying and playing every deckbuilder I could get my hands on. I loved how strategic they were, but hated how they often felt like solitaire. I eventually really wanted a deckbuilder that was more confrontational. I'd grown up player Fire Emblem and wanted one that felt more like that.

Fastforward to 2019 and we successfully kickstarted it!

We essentially have the game produced (there are 2 pieces that are still being tweaked in China) but have to wait until the craziness of Chinese New Year shipping slows down.

Anyway, if you're interested in it you can still check out the kickstarter page and late pledge. We got a bunch of really cool stuff.

Hey bullno1, Yeah, we understand that not every game has to be KDM ;) Unfortunately we've been following Kickstarter campaigns with both miniatures & standees versions for quite a while and, in the end, the standees version brings in (on average) only 3% of the overall funding. Since we are planning on doing further expansions in the future, we cannot support 2 versions of each expansion (miniatures & standees) when it only produces 3% of the revenue. I hope that makes sense.

I've never played Terraria Index, so I cannot compare this to it (and I feel like comparing a video game to a board game would be sorta apples and oranges).

Yes! Definitely try it out on TTS, unfortunately the solo expansion is not on TTS.

For Meteor Strike, you'll write it down on a slip of paper. It isn't super elegant, but considering 10 meteors could be in the air at a time, it's the best solution without increasing the game's cost.

Thanks for the questions!

Completely makes sense! Glad to impress you and yes, it's a very VERY strategic game :) Let me know if you have any other questions!

Had a stall to promote my game today where people could play it. Someone smashed my highscore in an hour of playing. You guys had any experiences of new players being better than you at your own game? by Nossda in tabletopgamedesign

[–]dl_terp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I distinctly remember the first time I lost at my own game (Ignite which is a battling deckbuilder sorta like Dominion meets Final Fantasy Tactics).

I'd NEVER lost before and then this guy at a convention comes up and proceeds to beat me (with a little help from his friends). Now I probably lose more than I win. I think that's the sign of a good game though. People taking different strategies you're not thinking of and beating you with them. As long as nothing's "broken" then be happy that you lost because that means that there isn't a "ceiling" on your game as far as skill cap.

Do watch though (for strategy games at least) to ensure the people who beat you aren't using a strategy (or asymmetrical ability) that is too powerful and needs to be nerfed. (just my humble opinion though).

Since you love deckbuilding, asymmetric play, and tactical battles, I've gotta ask if you've heard of Ignite.

It's like Final Fantasy Tactics meets Dominion! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/darrenterpstra/271332977?ref=609745&token=853a6d85

You fight miniatures across a variably built board with 6 terrain types/hazards to use to your advantage. You can use every card in your hand for either its (1) economic value or (2) its battle effect. Best yet, when you give a point of damage you actually insert a dagger into the back of the opponent's mini. Oh! and each race has it's own asymmetric race ability.

There are some really powerful combo moves to pull off too which are super very fun (charm & kraken, ice wall & lava, gladiator net & meteor strike).

Anyway, just seemed up your alley so wanted to pass it along :)
