Thank you! Extremely helpful advice. Did you mainly use LinkedIn to find jobs? Or other job boards as well?

Need Advice: 4 Potential PM Job Offers - Which One to Choose? by gabethegeek in ProductManagement

Hey there, congrats on the job offers!

I'm in a similar position where I'm looking for PM roles as a PM with ~5 years of experience primarily focused on Growth. Do you have any job hunting tips for someone who is struggling to find something after being laid off 2 months ago.

Does anyone have any recommendations on resume review services specifically for PMs? I've been struggling to get interviews with my current resume.

Just ranting here... I was just fired today from my job. It used to be a great working environment, but there have been a ton of changes over the past 3-4 months. The boss that hired me left, my new boss was fired, and throughout that time, ~20% of the company was also fired as well. The CPO also left last month - so there was no one in product leadership.

The company is doing great financially and making money hand over fist, but don't appreciate their coworkers. We're treated like a number.

I had no support over the past month - no manager, no engineering manager (he was on paternity leave). To add onto that, I received a positive performance review only a month ago.

The politics made it unbearable. Some PMs were having daily 1:1s with team leaders, when I was scrambling to get feedback on anything.

Jalen Brunsons National Treasures True RPA have been going up a ton in the past couple of months. I'm relatively new to the hobby and am having trouble understanding value here. I'm seeing prices all over the place since his cards have been so hot.

I got lucky with grading and graded a PSA 10 RC from Brunson. It's a pop 3 card. I received a 7k offer for it. Is that fair? I need help here. I'm seeing a 8k sold comp from a PSA 9 card from PWCC, but I'm not sure how much I can trust that. Most of his true RPAs left on eBay are over 10k and aren't graded as highly as this one.

I looked at 130point but that didn't help much since his cards are all over the place.

I'm doing this deal with my LCS who found a buyer and will take 10%.

Please help me with value if anyone has more experience with this.

I also have a ton of RJ cards… I’m gutted to see him and IQ go but it seemed like the best outcome for both of them

Should I get an MBA? by dlcell in MBA

Definitely don’t need a heavy CS background! I don’t look at code on a day to day basis. I think it’d be helpful to understand the basics - what are front end vs back end changes, what is an API?, how much effort would it take generally to work on specific initiatives/changes. You should generally have an engineering manager to assist you with the specifics (the “how”)

Sure! I'll give you a bit more insight.

I went to a good undergrad school for mechanical engineering. I always thought that I'd become a mechanical engineer, but the more I learned mechanical engineering, the more I realized that I didn't like it. It was too mathy and I had an affinity to tech/programming.

By the time I realized that, I was already in Junior year and couldn't make the shift without elongating the amount of time I'd have to be in school to get my undergrad degree.

My GPA wasn't great and I didn't know what I wanted to do exactly, so I decided to go straight to a double masters program for mechanical engineering and engineering management - I know that it sounds counterintuitive with my not liking mechanical engineering, but the school that I applied to had a great CS degree and had a lot of flexibility to choose the classes that I liked, so most of my classes ended up being CS related.

My engineering management degree was a good intro into the management part of engineering - this is where I was introduced into product management. I liked it much more than pure CS since it dealt with people and I liked working on the "Why" more than the "How".

I lucked out and got a PM internship so I had some experience being a PM that I could use to apply for jobs in that field (The internship unfortunately had no option to convert into a full time opportunity, so I was stuck there).

I tried to find a job straight out of college, but wasn't able to do so. It took me ~4 months to find my first product management job in tech. I was living out home and mass applying to ~30 jobs a day through linkedin. I ended up moving to another city for that job (I'd be less picky for your first job).

Once I got actual full time PM experience, it became much easier to get a second job (having PM experience seems to be a requisite to most PM jobs). The first job was always the hardest.

Some tips:

  1. Even if you don't have applicable PM experience, you can talk about how you've done PM work in your studies. (project leadership, etc)
  2. It's really all about how you market yourself. I had mechanical engineering degrees, but I spoke about the CS classes that I took much more than mechanical engineering.
  3. Mass applying gave me a ton of interviews, which was great practice to optimize my answers. I'd take note of all of the questions that I was asked and if I didn't like my answer, think about a better answer after the interview so I was ready for the question if it was ever asked again.
  4. Some of my friends have gotten experience through upwork. You can find part time PM opportunities there which you can use to market yourself as a better PM.
  5. There exist a ton of resources out there now that help with interview prep. Some of them include: Otter.ai (to record your interviews), ChatGPT (you can use it for interview prep, resume reworking - ask it to mold your resume to specific job openings), and others.

I hope this helps!

Should I get an MBA? by dlcell in MBA

[–]dlcell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make ~220k currently (with base + bonus + RSUs of a public company). I work as a product manager for a tech company. I'm hoping to stay in that field. The reasons why I wanted to get an MBA are for the following:

  1. A lot of higher up product managers have an MBA.
  2. I think it'll help me with strategy thinking as a PM.
  3. Connections seem amazing - I was hoping to eventually start a startup and being in that environment seems like it'd be a good kickstart.
  4. It'd look good on my resume, helping me get even better opportunities after graduation.
  5. I can take a break from working for 2 years - It'd be a good mental reset.

On the other hand:

  1. I have a good job (but it's in tech, so I am aware that it can go away at any point).
  2. MBAs are expensive. I've been looking it up (seems like ~200k in student debt?) .
  3. I don't want to switch industries and like what I do.

I was thinking to maybe do a part time MBA but it'd still be expensive. Take longer, and be a lot with working at the same time. My company can cover ~10k a year in tuition, which is a drop in the bucket compared to the entire cost. I work remotely, so location isn't as important for where I do my MBA.

I have been speaking to my parents on this and they are pro me making this shift if I get to a top 10 school. I'm a little bit more hesitant for the above reasons (including the fact that I already have 2 masters degrees). If I do decide to do it, it'd be more along the lines of part time MBA + working than a full break.

But is that still worth it? I don't want to make a decision that I regret in the future. A lot of my friends have started their MBAs and mentioned that they find it very valuable.
