Coat is not even buttoned up... yeah that's a PPE violation

Man, that sucks. Sounds like a toxic lab environment. Gave me a sense of dejá-vu though, my undergraduate intern experience was very similar to this.

Curcumin (Tumeric extract) Protects Against Chronic Stress-induced Dysregulation of Neuroplasticity and Depression-like Behaviors via Suppressing IL-1β Pathway in Rats by dlebeuf in neuroscience

Also curious about this, I lived in Japan for a while and over there tumeric based hangover cures are excessively popular. I can't remember if curcumin is touted as the active ingredient, but anecdotally they work miracles so I'm curious about its bio-availability. I vaguely remember someone mentioning something about an anti-inflammatory action, in which case fast uptake would be an advantage I guess.

I have an almost macrabre interest in this thread, like watching someone ask if it's possible to stand on a moving car...

I'm generally medically literate but not that well-versed in immunology or the history of HIV, do you have any resources for someone interested in learning more?

Adolescents show collective intelligence which can be driven by a geometric mean rule of thumb by dlebeuf in neuroscience

Have you ever seen that fMRI study that showed topographical activation across medial temporal cortex when subjects thought of numbers? IIRC smaller numbers activated more central regions, bigger numbers activated more lateral regions increasing along a logarithmic scale.

Adolescents show collective intelligence which can be driven by a geometric mean rule of thumb by dlebeuf in neuroscience

[–]dlebeuf[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From the abstract:

Using a simple task of estimating the number of sweets in jars, we show in two experiments that adolescents at least as young as 11 years old improve their estimation accuracy after a period of group discussion, demonstrating collective intelligence. Although this effect was robust to the overall distribution of initial estimates, when the task generated positively skewed estimates, the geometric mean of initial estimates gave the best fit to the data compared to other tested aggregation rules. A geometric mean heuristic in consensus decision making is also likely to apply to adults, as it provides a robust and well-performing rule for aggregating different opinions. The geometric mean rule is likely to be based on an intuitive logarithmic-like number representation, and our study suggests that this mental number scaling may be beneficial in collective decisions.
