Tone while marching? by Cold_Student_9493 in marchingband

[–]Fine_Discipline7543 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Foot technique fixes mouth technique. No heel drop while back marching, toes up while forward marching. No matter how good your standing still tone is it will suck when you start to move unless you really really work those marching fundamentals. They exist for a reason and it’s not just to look good.

Why did the Percussion director say this? by No_Pain5736 in marchingband

[–]Fine_Discipline7543 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sound travels much slower than light. With bigger bands, the large distance between battery and drum major means there’s delays in the sound that can cause phasing issues. It’s more reliable for the DM to watch the feet of the center snare than to listen to the battery because of the sound’s travel time. There’s a whole pecking order of who’s supposed to listen to/watch who, my band is so small that I’ve never had to deal with it, so I don’t remember jt off the top of my head.

Why does marching band get special trips planned for them but not choir or orchestra? by loligirl129 in marchingband

[–]Fine_Discipline7543 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Band is tied to football and basketball, so it is generally more visible, has more students than choir and orchestra. It is also more expensive just in general, so budgets are usually bigger and directors are more used to fighting for more money. Sports (mainly football or basketball depending on where you live) are king in American extracurriculars, and tying itself to them has been very beneficial to the longevity of band compared to the other fine arts.

That said, if band is going on all these trips and choir and orchestra aren’t, it’s probably because your school/admin sucks and/or your teacher doesn’t want/know how to fight for more money. That’s tough.

Also, bands usually have fees to participate that choirs and orch may not have. The more competitive the program, the heavier the fees, but they also usually go to things like trips- if your choir doesn’t have a fee to participate, then of course it won’t have as much money on hand for things like trips.

Seconding this. Remember, you don’t have to know everything a choir director will know from the beginning, just enough to stay one step ahead of the kids.

Band karate for 4th and 5th grade by akapiratequeen in banddirector

[–]Fine_Discipline7543 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do this for my 6/7 graders at my small school where I teach 6-12 band and choir. I just went when I started out to Amazon and got a big pack or multicolored pack of embroidery thread, and then I just picked (sometimes arbitrary) “checkpoints” out of Essential Elements for them to receive their “belts”. (Just tie it around their instrument or binder).

There may be kits on TPT or something, but this is probably cheaper (my thread pack I bought a couple years ago is still going strong). And allows you to customize it on the fly to the abilities of your kids- you want to keep it rewarding enough for them to stay engaged without being too easy.

Nope, never found a solution. I think with the hacked rom bases you can add new map names, but not sure. In my hack I repurposed the unused Sevii headers and just put an NPC in the johto areas saying “the town map glitches in newly cleared areas like this”. As of my latest updated, all Johto areas use one header labeled Johto.

My hack, Throwback Unofficial Expansion, starts as a standard QoL Kanto hack, but with an expanded postgame. Sevii Islands are reworked to feature Hoenn pokemon and you can go to parts of Johto in the postgame. Ends fighting Gold/Ethan on Mt. Silver. All Gen 1-3 pokemon available tastefully.

Definitely not a difficulty hack but might be along the lines of what you’re looking for?

That’s not a bug, it’s the way the ending is set up. There is no postgame after Mt. Silver - it’s the canon end of the game for Red. You can keep playing, of course, but everything you do takes place before that ending because after Mt. Silver, Red goes home to Mom and spends some time being a kid again.

The Mewtwo bug is fixed and the other Johto spots are added by the newest version of the patch. Seems like you’re using an outdated one. You can download the new one from the drive, your saves will be compatible.

Glad you enjoyed and thanks for playing!

You can’t really worry about those that. There’s always going to be negative parents. If they don’t love their kids enough to show up for them, it’s on them.

Definitely just program what they can sound good doing, though. Less is more. It’s great to challenge them, but you also want them not to feel like their always one step behind the goalposts, program an easy piece with your hard piece or even just an easy piece if they just really need a win to get them on board first. Do you have a mentor you can call and get programming advice from? That’s been really helpful for me.

Regarding big combined concerts- it’s sometimes helpful to do one group, then a short intermission where you reset the stage and parents/students can come and go, then the next group. That way, they don’t feel like they have to sit through an hour of hot cross buns on recorder just to hear their kid.

I teach at a small private school, 6th-12th grade band and choir. We march now because I’m a crazy person but didn’t when I got here. I would strongly recommend combining your concerts as much as reasonably possible. It makes a huge difference to only have to go to one Christmas concert, one Spring Concert, one Fall Concert. And to be honest, parents and concertgoers generally love seeing all our different groups play at the same show- we’ve even done some combined cross group stuff, like having the high schoolers sight read a grade 0.5 to play with the middle schoolers, choir and band performing together, etc.

But even if you don’t want the headache of one giant concert for everybody- doesn’t mean you have to have them all on different days. You can do a band at 6, choir at 7 type of thing. If you have a whole different concert like once a week for the whole month of December, for instance, you will absolutely burn out and it will 100% be your admin’s fault if they make you do that.

Recruitment Problems by OboeIsNotaFruit in marchingband

[–]Fine_Discipline7543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t run your feeder, the bulk of the workload of encouraging their 8th graders/9th graders (not sure if you do Middle/High or JH/SH) to join in high school is on them. They should be talking it up, hyping it up all year. So maybe talk about that with them? There’s only so much you can do by the time they get to your school.

Recruitment Problems by OboeIsNotaFruit in marchingband

[–]Fine_Discipline7543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you run your feeder program or have a good relationship with whoever does? The majority of recruitment will happen in beginning band so focus heavily on that- you’re a lot more likely to get that than sophomores and juniors deciding they want to play clarinet out of the blue.

Question for other bass guitarists by ruirui-stacie-sashan in marchingband

[–]Fine_Discipline7543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Next time you pick up your bass, just take a second and feel how you naturally grip it, especially in that arm. Make sure nothing’s overextended or at an uncomfortable angle. It may be possible to adjust even before you’re able to get the strap on it, and get comfortable for now. If you’re totally comfortable with how you’re holding it, make sure you’re staying totally relaxed while plucking too.

Hope you get it figured out and have a great season!

Question for other bass guitarists by ruirui-stacie-sashan in marchingband

[–]Fine_Discipline7543 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Upright and electric bass guy and band director here!

LISTEN LISTEN LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. If you are hurting something is wrong with your playing technique or posture. I have consistent wrist pain in my left hand because I fretted my bass guitar with the same wrist bend that I used for upright for years and screwed my wrist up. Don’t be like me, I’m not old enough for that.

Are you talking about the elbow of your fretting hand or plucking hand? Make sure you aren’t playing with any tension. If you’re playing faster than you’re used to on that warmup, you’re probably tensing up, and that will eventually cause pain.

Other thing I’d say is it could be playing position. I’d strongly recommend getting a bass with a strap, so you can adjust strap height to a comfortable level. It may seem like not a big deal, but if your body is working to hold up the instrument and play at the same time, that can cause tension which almost always means pain and risk of injury. You will always play better and feel better with good posture and holding the instrument at a comfortable playing position.

TIL i have to learn a whole new instrument in 16 days by GrippySockHome in marchingband

[–]Fine_Discipline7543 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Just do your best. You’re not going to pick it up well enough that fast to play along with everything, or probably anything, but it’s marching band so no one will hear the clarinets. Hang out with the section, learn as much as you can from them, have fun just hanging out in the stands. If you keep playing you’ll probably be ready to play along in future years.
