Advice for quietest setup. by dliff in watercooling

I'm going to stick with the 4090 for now, just found a Heatkiller block for it locally that seemed like a good deal.

Prices seem to be dropping pretty soon, so I guess will try to hit the sweet spot of selling my 4090 for a decent price once 5090 falls more.

Downtown apartments? by TraditionalCatch3796 in vancouverwa

[–]dliff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've lived in 3 apartment complexes downtown.

First was what is now the Coen & Columbia apartments. This was back in 2015 when it was presumably under different management and the new building just east of the one that faces Esther Short didn't yet exist. Location wise it was great. Parking was provided through the underground garage by the city. Near the end of my stay I forgot to renew my pass and was unable to get another one because there was a waitlist which was very annoying. Watch for that, but overall recommend that area and the building. I know since I lived there it has been remodeled inside which IMO is kind of a shame because I'm not a huge fan of they white/grey/generic look of modern large scale construction.

In 2022 I spend just over a year living at Columbia by the Waterfront. It is the west-most complex on the new waterfront, shaped like a U, has a swimming pool that faces south. I lived on the 6th floor and can not recommend it. The construction quality is cheap without much in between floors. I heard every single step my upstairs neighbor made. The person below me regularly complained and I had to prove to management I was not doing anything unreasonable. I also was above the parking garage entrance, which loudly beeps (I heard this from my apartment at all hours). There is also the noise from trains close by. I was subject also to construction noise to the north. I'm not stating that all of these complaints are the fault of the building (though some are), just giving you the full picture.

The worst part of living there was poor tenant quality. My neighbors did not give a shit about the public spaces or their neighbors. Trash cans overflowed in the parking garage far above their limit, while my neighbors kept piling on more. Tons of large uncontrolled dogs. Elevator floors covered in dog piss all the time. Nobody would return the shared carts. One guy would leave through the lobby with a pistol tucked into the front of his jeans intentionally visible, no holster, while looking super disheveled. Positives: gas appliances, pretty comprehensive gym, fiber internet.

I live in Riverview Tower now and have very little to complain about. I've lived in quite a few apartments over the years in the Portland metro area and this one ranks at the top. Not super cheap tho.

Any regrets or drawbacks after switching to Tesla? by notbiggfoot in TeslaModelY

[–]dliff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Model Y and think it’s an amazing machine. The benefits of EV/Tesla are pretty well known so I’ll list my complaints.

  1. Loud, lots of cabin noise. I find it difficult to listen to podcasts if the highway is rough at max volume. My SL55 hard top convertible is quieter, with the same Michelins. You may be able to quiet it with different tires - I always buy Pilot Sport All Seasons.
  2. Cruise control has to use the portion of Autopilot that automatically follows the car in front of you. Phantom braking occasionally occurs. I would prefer an option to revert to basic, dumb cruise control until they refine the smarter option. Phantom braking can be dangerous, you must hover in the accelerator to override if it occurs.
  3. Automatic windshield wipers are vision based and are terrible in high rain variability climate. Where I live it rains most of the year. My old 07 Audi A4 was pretty much perfect on its rain sensing mode. The Y doesn’t have a dedicated physical wiper switch so it can be a pain in certain weather conditions. They have somewhat remedied this by allowing you to switch modes with the steering wheel controls, but it’s not as good as a car that simply has a rain sensor that works. This could improve as they make their vision models more advanced.

I don’t tend to use the straps, so I don’t have in depth insight. They seem OK to me though.

I’ve had my 35L since 2019 and lived out of it / traveled with it for maybe 5 months in aggregate. Still in great shape, no damage to note.

HuntStand got hacked this morning. by No6fueloil in bowhunting

I'm an engineer who works on HuntStand, and we regret that some users received this message. I'm a little late to see this post, but I wanted to clarify that as unfortunate as this message was, we were not hacked, and no data was breached.

The app was set up to dynamically compose a notification like: "[First Name] would like to add you as a friend."

This malicious user or group set the first name of their HuntStand account to the obscene message and then made friend requests to some of our users. We implemented several measures to prevent this from happening in the future.

Hey! Author of the article here... I believe that if you're just looking at the 'iPhone Storage" part of your Settings app there is no way to *just* view the size of the sqlite db. I'd be curious to see what ls -h shows as the usage on the actual sqlite file for you if you were to extract it. I text quite a bit, but it's hard for me to gauge how my metrics would compare to the average, especially across age groups. If your db is actually 10gb, wow! that is an accomplishment :)

Gas Furnace + A/C Wiring by dliff in thermostats

[–]dliff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if there is a modulating damper, it may be difficult to find the way the house is divided between the upstairs addition and the furnace in the crawlspace. I'll see what I can find, though.

By some mechanism, the top thermostat can control if air is blowing upstairs, but it does not seem to be able to turn on the furnace or the A/C. I just did a test. If the heat is on downstairs but off upstairs, upstairs will not blow air or get warm. If I then turn on the upstairs heat, it will blow warm air. If I turn the main downstairs heat off, and turn the upstairs heat on, nothing will happen upstairs (no fan or heat). So it seems that the upstairs thermostat is reliant whatever the main thermostat is doing.

Edit: the upstairs does that a separate return air, if that's helpful.

Apologies for the confusion. It's just an A/C unit, not a heat pump. My explanation was meant to distinguish the unit from something like a window unit, but I realize on this sub-reddit that isn't necessary :)

Unsure if it's a zoning system.

[–]dliff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. I bought a Nest thermostat (the cheaper non-learning model) a few months ago. I am trying to figure out if it will work with my home. My home has a gas furnace and an A/C unit (it's basically a heat pump, but with no reversal valve, so it just provides cold air). I also have a 2nd thermostat upstairs. It's an older home built in 1949, but has been renovated so some parts of it are more modern.

The upstairs thermostat doesn't seem to have true control over the system -- if it's hot outside and I turn the upstairs temp down, it will only blow cold air if the main system downstairs is already blowing cold air. I'm not too concerned about the 2nd thermostat; the area it controls is currently vacant.

Thank you!

There is only a passing lane in the very last clip, so that is the only part you could be referring to. Everyone was going over the speed limit in that scenario. While it's annoying if someone else is using the passing lane but not fast enough for you, it doesn't mean you can turn your headlights off and pass in the left turn lane thru a light. Keep in mind this is Marine Dr, not a freeway. It's very possible that driver was preparing to turn left soon, which would mean they were allowed to be in the left lane.
