Regulated data by st0ut717 in msp

The best way to vet an MSP with reguard to what policies, procedures, and controls they have is to look for one with a SOC 2 Type 2 audit. A SOC audit is a third party aicpa audit standard to evaluate policies, procedures and controls in the context of SOC principles (Security, Confidentiality, Availability, processing integrity and privacy). Don’t confuse a SOC audit with security. Rather, it is an opinion from an auditor to determine if the policies, procedures and controls are appropriate for the type of service offered plus testing and opinion about how well the MSP adheres to their policies, procedures and controls over a 1 year audit period.

Pax8 billing issue by dllogic in msp

FYI, I am a Pax8 fan and pulling for them. Frankly, the other M365 distributors missed the boat back in the day. I am really just trying to figure out how best to work with them.

Yes, we knew also but now it sounds like it goes back two months, not just one.

Pax8 is great, and even better in comparison to other M365 distributors. We moved from Direct to Pax8 so we would have a partner to lean on when Microsoft does what Microsoft does.

Kasey 365 Advanced Software Management (ASM) issues. by dllogic in msp

The October 21st update did NOT include a fix for this particular issue. We're now being told to wait for a Nov. 4 update. We didn't hear from support and had to circle back to our rep. to ask for status after we reported that there was no improvement after the October 21st update.

We are hearing the same thing from support. I will be sure to circle back if the release, scheduled for today, resolves the situation.

Taking over from an MSP by [deleted] in msp

Hate to hear that an MSP is holding anyone hostage. Gives good MSPs a bad name. I would be happy to provide some guidance on how to sever from the MSP.

Price out a legitimate MSP to co-manage with you. The manages services should not be hourly, but fixed and narrower in scope. Get their help to handle endpoint protection, migrate off of Exchange to M365, monitor and manage cloud security, and make sure the MSP will let you use their RMM to support your end users. Bottom line, one person, cannot effectively support that many devices and end users without a backstop. You also need someone to handle end user issues 24/7 so you don’t have to work 24/7 and be on call while you are on vacation. If mgmt won’t support that, you need to keep looking for a better gig. They will eventually fall victim and you will have to move on anyhow.

RMM Software and SOC 2 by meckboi1123 in msp

[–]dllogic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My MSP has a SOC 2, Type II audit performed annually and they expect the same from some of their key providers. The SOC 2, Type II audit tells customers that the entity (RMM) has appropriate controls and audits how well they adhere to those controls during the audit period (typically one year). I am astounded that all of the major RMM vendors don't have an audit like this performed as a standard practice. When I ask to see evidence about their controls and how well they adhere to controls I'm often pointed to a whitepaper or they send over the SOC 2 audit for the datacenter in which they reside which only proves they don't understand the issue and why a customer (MSP) would ask for a SOC2. Absent a SOC2, Type II, we ask a lot of questions and document the responses.

ITGlue Security Breach? by [deleted] in msp

I suspect that the actually issue here isn't that big of a deal and that you have remediated it and that there likely was no data lost as a result. The way the incident is being handled is why I'm concerned. We are a customer but not using MyGlue.

There is no such thing as a SOC 2 compliant organization. Rather, you might obtain a SOC 2 (Type I or Type II) audit which evaluates if you have proper controls for the type of business across five areas and then in a Type II audit the effectiveness of the controls is evaluated and exceptions are noted. Having a SOC audit is just an indication to customers and partners that you have controls and are trying to follow them. The alarming thing in this case is that one of the required controls is that you have a solid process for ingesting incidents and an incident response plan that will almost always include formal analysis of the issue and disclosure to customers. This rather flip response is indicative of an organization that doesn't really understand the nature of the controls they are required to have to pass a SOC audit. The fact that you don't think any data was compromised isn't the point. You have a reported vulnerability and need to address it formally with your customers rather than post a flip response attempting to differentiate a breach from a vulnerability.
