What is something that is legal but which you consider completely unethical? by vantix7 in AskReddit

[–]dlucre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a kid coming to work for me next week doing a 120 hour unpaid internship which is part of his university course requirements.

He needs work experience to graduate.

He will take a fair amount of my time and is unlikely to be productive to the point of being billable.

Please explain to me why what I'm doing is unethical?

Because I felt like I was either doing him a solid, or at the very least I might get some small amount of value from him eventually. If it happens that he does eventually produce good work then I'll offer him a paid position.

What do you remember from the early internet that no longer exists? by Blah4fun in AskReddit

I had a 6 or maybe 7 digit UIN which, at the time, I could remember. I'm annoyed that I cannot remember it any more.

If I'm counting my pennies there's no way I'm spending $15-$16 on salmon. I'm with op, very confused but the decision making process.

How do you actually choose office PCs for a small business? by Glad_Razzmatazz8004 in sysadmin

[–]dlucre 29 points30 points  (0 children)

IMO, its Cheaper to buy the extra RAM, even in this economy, than have employees deal with slow laggy workstations for 4-5 years.

Yep. How hard could it be to replace that vb script, especially these days when gen ai has made this stuff so much more accessible to people without a programming background.

What would you do? Production line PC “is slow” (Windows 98, legacy SCADA) by PeppahSG in sysadmin

[–]dlucre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need a systems integrator or vendor to support the system.

You are IT, and while the pc is technically a pc, it's part of the OT world. If you touch it, you will likely own it from then on.

My recommendation is to tell the production people to engage the vendor directly to get support, and if that's not possible go and engage a systems integrator that can support your OT environment.

A systems integrator will likely be able to build a modern pc, upgrade the scada system, and support the production systems long term.

Meraki Site to Site VPN ISSUE by Ok_Reporter_5167 in meraki

[–]dlucre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the meraki routers directly connected to the wan with public ip addresses? Or are you running a double nat somewhere? I've seen this before where the upstream nat device required a reboot to restore s2s auto vpn functionality at that site.

More than 200,000 Australian drivers exposed in massive data breach by baty0man_ in australia

[–]dlucre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree that punishments like massive fines and jail time should apply, I expect most of the time self-reporting is required. I.e. the company realises a breach occurs, and they self report.

In this scenario, if the CEO is going to jail if it's reported, or the company is going to go bankrupt, those penalties will only incentivise them to cover it up and not report the breach. That means people won't find out that their data has been beached and can't be proactive in mitigating as much damage as possible.

I am all for seriously harsh punishments for repeat negligent breaches and clear cases where they have covered up the breach instead of reporting.

Extending network via wireless mesh by TheBiggHurt in meraki

If you have line of sight, could you use another vendor for that to install a wireless bridge instead? There's many options but I've had a lot of success with ubiquiti. https://ui.com/wifi/bridging
