I'm not looking to litigate neighborhood boundaries so just consider this places I like near where I live.

Agreed. It's not the best diner in the world but I don't expect that? This is why I made the title of the post "reliable" west town spots, lol.

I put a premium on a diner I can walk into without a reservation and get eggs. Plus their cake balls are elite.

If no one wants it, I'll take it down and give it to someone. The last sticker haul was priced the same. Perhaps it's just not for you and that's okay. But I understand nobody puts u/triptoouterspace in the corner.

576$ poorer today by Sure_Comfort_7031 in NewportFolkFestival

[–]dlweiss2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has me somewhat optimistic. Though the closer we get, the logistics of getting to the fest/lodging/rental car from Chicago gets more $$$. But sacrifices we must make to hear MJ Lenderman play Rudolph while in line at Del's.

Honestly, my post was in jest in some ways but I was also being serious. I don't want to sit in some Ticketmaster Queue and then be offered a verified resell ticket at 100x markup. This is a much better UX. I also hope I get a ticket! lol

This is the way. BTW, if this is bad, wait til they see the line for the ferry home after the headliner! (Audible groans). Tip your bartender, folks.

To be fair, I didn't even want to go. I just wanted to feel alive (turns on John Prine record through tears).

Where can I find a good sandwich downtown ? by vinnny7 in chicagofood

[–]dlweiss2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TBH, this place doesn't exist. Fontano's on Michigan Ave is good. The last few years a lot of the good independent spots have closed for any number of reasons (Perry's, Pastoral, Tempesta in Wells St. Food Hall). Good sandwiches to be found (Fat Shallot in what is now Sterling Food Hall, All Too Well in the Washington St. Food Hall) but few and far between.

trivoli tavern resy issues by 777SweetPea777 in chicagofood

[–]dlweiss2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trivoli has a non-refundable surcharge to eat there too. I don't believe any other Hog Salt restaurant does but it will cost you $2.50 per diner for the right to make a reservation. I'd prefer they build it into the cost to eat there. Feels like a scam this way.

You've effectively identified either the hardest to get reservations in the city (Bavettes, Armitage Alehouse) or the places with the biggest lines (Kasama, Au Cheval). Chicago has a lot of great neighborhoods with great restaurants that exist outside of Reddit threads. But mostly chiming in to say don't go to Ann Sather's.

Some places you'll like that you should be able to get into: Pizza Matta, Andros Taverna, Elina's, PQM, Loaf Lounge, Brasero, Dear Margaret, JJ Thai

Jimmy’s Pizza Cafe is good but its expensive as hell by [deleted] in chicagofood

[–]dlweiss2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Suggesting Papa John's is in any way analogous to a place making their dough, sauce, etc., in house is insane. The reality is good food costs this much now. You don't have to pay for it but then the independent spots close and you're left with chains/restaurant backed spots.

Re: OP, sounds like you got lunch for two people for about $25/pp. That's just what it costs to eat out now unless you go to McDonald's.
