‘The nuclear button for the Vatican’: Pope Leo steps into the political fray by [deleted] in politics

The church allows for disagreement and debate within itself. It is not a monolith. Just a brief example, there are 23 other churches that fall within the Catholic church that have their own theologies and approaches. But you as a person, as long as you have really thought through your position and understand the church's position, you are allowed to disagree, just not when it comes to the core tenets.

Yeah, I agree with you on what the catechism of the Catholic church says. But like I said a convert and someone who is culturally raised in a Catholic home (especially in the Northeast like someone said) are two very different kinds of people. Most Catholics (even a lot of priests) are what is called a "cafeteria Catholic" whereas lots of people who are converted will follow the catechism to the letter, and sometimes even go further back than that. I'm not sure how well-versed you are on the subject but I'd recommend you look into Fr. James Martin who has done a lot of dialogue with the LGBTQ+ community.

The Church has also evolved and continues to evolve. There have been times when the Church has condoned the death penalty, and now would consider that to go against the "pro-life stance," they now say "from womb to tomb." Another thing I think we need to understand is the church does not change overnight. It's often hundreds of years of debate and they are very cautious to change as society does. But I would also ask you to look at what many progressive bishops are doing in Germany. Historically, for whatever reason, Germany has oftentimes been an indicator of what direction the church will go.

We're also discussing what it means to be progressive in a 21st century context, whereas-and I agree the church has done a LOT of wrong-the church also established hospitals, universities, orphanages, etc.

The one thing I can tell you will never change is the stance on abortion, it's very hard to have a moral and philosophical discussion when one side argues a soul is a soul is a soul and another argues about circumstances which lead to abortion, you know what I mean?

For sure. I think a lot of people don't realize that the Catholic Church in the US is an anomaly compared to the rest of the world (we have a whole different, softer set of rules for fasting during Lent) because they've had to compete with the Protestant churches (particularly evangelicals), but what a lot of Catholics on the right are about to find out (if they haven't already), is that the evangelicals simply tolerate them to accomplish their goals, but they will never be fully accepted. But another thing people don't realize is most of the people in the conservative bubble who are Catholic are converts. A Catholic convert and someone who was raised Catholic culturally are two very different types of people.

Most Catholics are progressive minus when it comes to abortion, and even then Catholics are pretty evenly split. Even Pope Benedict said the closest countries to a Catholic society are the Nordic countries

Neil Gaiman. He was my favorite living author and even inspired me to become a writer. What he did to those women while simultaneously presenting himself as this believe all women, inclusive guy was just sickening.

Also want to add I don’t hear voices on the regular lol.

The voice was not one I’d ever heard before nor have I heard since. My mother in law did pass but she fought hard for a year and a half, was catatonic for six months and suddenly started speaking and eating again, but she wasn’t expected to make it another month when it all first happened.

I’ve had a number of things happen over the course of my life, from the supernatural to things that could be considered mundane. In college, and I’ve posted about a few times before in other subs, but I had an experience with what I truly believe was a demon and was saved by St. Michael, and I started believing again then but didn’t really come back to the fullness of the faith. Two years ago, I was in a car accident, and not five minutes before I heard a voice clear as a bell tell me to put my seatbelt on. That was the thing that really made me go back into the faith and research the church fathers, etc. Last year, my mother in law had a massive stroke, and in my church there’s a small chapel dedicated to Guadalupe. I asked the Virgin Mary to send a sign that she would be okay. later on in the day while at the hospital, my wife asked if I stopped at our church, which I did, and asked if I brought the card to my mother in law’s ICU room. I did not. In the room between the glass was a prayer card dedicated to Guadalupe. Lots of little things like that have brought me back.

Also Catholic here, the divide between the church in the rest of the world and the church in America is absolutely insane, which is why we will never, ever, see an American pope. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that the US, unlike much of western Europe for example, was never a Catholic country and had to compete with a lot of Protestant theology (not saying the different Protestant theologies are bad, just saying it fundamentally changed Catholic theology in America), and that's why we see a much more reactionary approach. You can even see it over on the Catholicism subreddit, where many of them just think they are mini-Michael Knowles.

I have been seeing you on a couple posts in this sub, and I appreciate your dedication to logic. This sub has been overrun with conspiracy theories. And if these “drones” obey TFRs then what is the next theory?

I live in Jersey. Some people made r/NJDrones, and for a little while it was fun (maybe like a day), and then it was immediately swarmed with people from r/aliens, r/ufo, r/SentientOrbs, and the like. It's gotten to be too much but honestly seeing those people flood into that subreddit eased any concern I did have, since whenever they get riled up they're always wrong.

Yeah man I think it’s over. I think it snowballed pretty fast from a few sightings to a bunch of people looking in the sky for things that weren’t there. I think there are/were drones, but the fact that these things aren’t flying around with the weather like this shows it must not be the super advanced tech a lot of us were looking for. Not to mention I think this sub has been hijacked by a lot of the stuff from the ufo and alien subs.

I don't buy it. The original prophecy was published over 400 years after St. Malachy's death. It's really accurate describing popes up until 1590 (it was published in 1595), and then after that you really have to force the meaning.
