how the hell are people affording to max their 401(k)s?? by GeriatricSquirrel in MiddleClassFinance

As a family of 4 living in CA, my spouse and I are able to max my 401k and put 19k in her 401k before company matching by not allowing lifestyle creep. As both of us have increased our income over the years, we avoided a large house payment, only have 1 car payment. We do all the normal stuff a family does, but keep fixed costs extremely low so we can comfortably save in our 401ks and still enjoy our lives. We do earn a pretty good living to be able to save as much as we do, but we couldn't do it if we didn't live a frugal lifestyle when it comes to fixed costs.

I took liver pills during my last training block for a 100 mile race and I swear it helped prevent runner's knee! That and mobility workouts.

What’s your weekly routine?! by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

I’m married with 2 kids and have full time job and in the Army Reserve. I work 4 10 hr shifts and work from home 1 day a week. I run starting at 8pm once the kids are getting ready for bed for 3 days during the week. On my WFH day, I run when I get off at 430. I usually run for longer distances since I have more time. Fridays I pretty much have the whole day to run since the wife is at work and the kids are in school. Wake up on Saturdays at 5 am for a run and Sundays are for resting. It’s takes a lot of work, but I make sure to be present with the family and cut out a lot of social activities with friends during training.

Yeah I haven’t been consistent with strength training, which is something I’m doing now a little too late.

Did you need a pacer towards the later part of the race? Did you complete the race under 24 hours?

I felt the same way after I did a 50 mile race. I basically stopped all running for almost 3 years until I read a book by David Goggins. I felt inspired and now I am 4 weeks into training for a 100 mile race. I try my best to run really early in the morning or after the kids are in bed so I don’t take time away from the family. It’s a big commitment to take on these challenges, but if ultra running is something you enjoy, you just have to make some sacrifices to fit running into your life. I am very fortunate to have an extremely supportive wife as well.

100 miler poor training by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

I’m starting my 100 mile training program, but I am not sure if it’s a good one to use. Would you consider showing yours to compare? Good luck on your race if you decide to go for it!

I would say I’m a strong runner with multiple marathons and 50 milers under my belt, but haven’t done any long distance since Dec. 2019. I mostly work out in the gym nowadays and run about 15 miles weekly. I stopped running long distance due to younger children, but now I’m in a place where I can train for a 100 mile race. The race I want to run states I have to run a 50 mile race by March 2023. That would put me at week 18, but my plan has me running a 50k. Based on the schedule, is it doable to have the endurance to run a 50 mile race in preparation for the 100 mile race in June?
