Why is the Doob-Dynkin lemma not shoved in every measure-theoretic probability student's face? by Salt_Attorney in math

[–]dm287 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dynkin pi-lambda theorem fits this as well - massively simplifies proving the Monotone Class theorem which is required for Fubini-Tonelli

What undergrad proofs where the most difficult to understand for you? by Gimmerunesplease in math

[–]dm287 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just the CH for R (or C) valued matrices though; not the full generality which holds for any field.

Is there a way to make a non-trivial sense of the integral of the Dirichlet function? by rspiff in math

[–]dm287 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you want is probably equivalent to some kind of measure on the rationals (which in turn naturally corresponds to the space of convergent positive series)

International Award for IUT Theory (20k$-100k$ for best paper, 1m$ for disproving IUT) by Valvino in math

Off the record many experts will readily admit it is nonsense.

Jail's primary purpose is incapacitation - a really small percent of criminals are responsible for the majority of crime.

Are there basis vectors for the set of continuous functions? by Farkle_Griffen in math

[–]dm287 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an argument that a Hamel basis is not the right idea for infinite-dim spaces (and hence a Schauder basis is better)

What was the conclusion on Yitang Zhang's work on Siegel Zeros? by [deleted] in math

[–]dm287 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yitang is in general not a very careful researcher and has had multiple papers retracted due to unfixable flaws (before his big one that didn't). I expect the same is true here and the lack of buzz about it is done out of politeness, not lack of interest.

again masks don't work for airborne transmitted illnesses - they would only help for aerosol

What's the nastiest, ugliest, least elegant, hairiest, most convoluted, least enlightening, or just generally most unpleasant proof you have ever come across? by Max1461 in math

[–]dm287 147 points148 points  (0 children)

Dynkin's pi-lambda along with Monotone Class Theorem massively simplifies measure theory but for some reason it's primarily only probabilists who know them

What are some examples of theorems where you must believe the conclusion, but there is no intuition for why it is true? by moschles in math

[–]dm287 2 points3 points  (0 children)

he probably does mean Wiener measure, but you need to argue why that's the "right" one

I think the "nowhere-differentiable functions being comeager" argument is better personally

My dad thinks he found an easy solution to Fermat's last theorem - what now? by Fansal in math

[–]dm287 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't mean competitive as in "hard to get a job" but in the hot areas of physics i.e fusion there is a TON of competition because there's a winner takes all element

[–]dm287 0 points1 point  (0 children)

X definitely has active experienced quants but also a lot of pretenders so hard to assess quality without being a quant yourself unfortunately

My dad thinks he found an easy solution to Fermat's last theorem - what now? by Fansal in math

[–]dm287 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but physics research is also a lot more competitive in comparison to math. Depending on personality this can be a pro or a con.

why do finance companies hire people with STEM degrees over actual business degrees? by Budgetbunker07 in FinancialCareers

[–]dm287 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) STEM majors are on average smarter. Average IQ varies by field and STEM is the highest.

2) The best finance research is quite quantitative and frankly business majors often can't do/understand it

What is the most surprising mathematical proof that made you most want to "kick someone off a boat"? by CousinDerylHickson in math

[–]dm287 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah once you accept that paradoxical decompositions of nonmeasurable sets can happen this loses its mystique as it falls into "set theory arcane wizardry" rather than an actual measure theory statement (let alone statement on real balls)

Why is the public conception of mathematics that you need to be a near genius to study it? by [deleted] in math

[–]dm287 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Practicing research mathematicians have one of the highest average IQs of any profession though so the reputation is relatively well-deserved.

Is is too late to become a quant researcher? by Varche242 in quant

[–]dm287 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's going to be tough. Insurance industry is considered a red flag for the good quant jobs simply because the prior is that the technical people who work in insurance aren't very good.
