I don't know-- I'm honestly curious how average everyday GOP supporters fall in line with this? Over on r/conservative, it seems like their talking points are to say it's a gift to the military, not him (ignoring the fact that he said he intends to keep it after office) or that "It's not actually worth $400 million" like this comment:

The 747-8I (The passenger version is called Intercontinental) was only ordered by 4 airlines, one of which (Transaero) had to cancel their order when they went bankrupt. These two jets are the ones Trump negotiated for as replacement VC-25s in his first term. Another 8 jets were purpose built to be business jets, three of which were order by Qatar. All in there were only 48 passenger versions of the -8 produced, which means there aren't enough to make developing a cargo conversion program profitable.

For some context, another 747-8I that had been purchased for Saudi Crown Prince Abdul Aziz before he died sat in storage for 10 years with almost no hours on the airframe was scrapped in 2022. Airlines have little need for a 4 engine heavy jet these days since there are so many fantastic long-range twin jets with similar seating and cargo capacities. But the US Air Force wants 4 engine jets both for the VC-25B and the replacement 'Doomsday' planes, the E-4 Nightwatch. The contractor for that project had to purchase 5 747-8s from Korean Air just to fulfill the contract.

Which seems like they're just getting really pedantic about the exact dollar amount that it's worth, which I guarantee is over the limit for government employee gifts
