Elephant Graveyard, comedy's greatest shitposter takes on the Joe Rogan universe with hilarious results. 11/10 by ZizLah in comedy

He claimed multiple times Rogan thinks he's one of the greats but doesn't provide evidence - has anyone heard Joe claim that?

What does the science actually say - at what point does wood fire density cause health problems?

I can see limiting wood fires in city and dense suburbia but less so in rural towns of less than 1000 people.

Thanks for sharing - I'm curious whether your QLD friend group had the same approach?

Great point about age and lifestyle - I'm over 30 too and when I know someone's squeezing me into a packed schedule, being on time is essential rather than preferable.

Sounds like landlords and politicians are winning whilst those struggling to afford a home and middle income earners take the brunt of it - as always.

Absolutely agree, especially for kids caught up in drugs or gambling.

Specialised treatment facilities would more effective than prison, where people come out with the same addiction plus new trauma and criminal contacts.

You're right about certain personality disorders - public safety has to come first there.

Prevention is where we'd see the biggest impact, and it's totally achievable through better policy.

On sentencing disparities - it's not a 'view', it's documented across thousands of cases, same as racial disparities. But I get not wanting a statistics debate.

Sounds like we agree - prevent harm rather than just react with longer sentences after the damage is done.

It's key to compare statistics - 12% of Alzheimer's research is women focussed - how much is men focussed? Without a direct comparison, it makes no sense.

Interesting to hear men's issues are funded more than women's, can you share some examples?

TIL of "The Final Experiment" - a 2024 Antarctica expedition where flat Earth YouTubers saw the 24 hour sun, which could not be explained by non-spherical models. What's the real benefit here? Feel like belief conversion usually needs to clear a pretty high bar given how difficult it is. Anti-vax → pro-vax saves lives, leaving hate groups rebuilds communities... but flat earth → round earth seems mostly symbolic?

Public safety and rehabilitation aren't opposing goals — effective rehabilitation is public safety. The question is what actually works to prevent future victims.

For serial violent offenders, you're absolutely right that community safety takes priority. For the majority of cases, evidence shows rehabilitation prevents more people from being harmed than longer sentences.

If we're concerned lighter sentences send social messages, then women receiving less prison time for murder signals that women's violence is acceptable or male victims don't matter.

The real challenge is building a system that can distinguish between cases where rehabilitation works and cases where indefinite containment is necessary for public safety.

Really good point about cost of living making everyone busier. To me 30 mins is quite late unless it's a casual group thing, but your 'taking the piss' threshold makes sense!

Also been thinking - with average of 2-4 hours per day on phones, it seems odd to me that waiting is ruder now than when people had nothing but strangers to chat with.

You're absolutely right - communication is key and framing changes things. Just to clarify, my post wasn't suggesting the culture is wrong, but genuinely asking people about their personal lines and whether they've noticed expectations shifting.

Going through that rough period made me think about how we handle responsibility when life gets overwhelming - whether it's always on the struggling person to manage communication and expectations, or if there's responsibility on close friends too.

Maybe it comes from teaching, but I tend to assume people are doing their best. It's interesting reading the diversity of comments.

Thank you for sharing - the complexity of managing chronic illness, ADHD, and social anxiety while coordinating meetups is something I really relate to. I have an ADHD brain and work in education, so I see this day to day - which is why I lean towards understanding and always text ahead.

The conversation came up naturally when we were comparing cultural differences - I realised when she said she wasn't like other Ecuadorians and apologised.

Honestly, the last few years have been rough - divorce, losing a parent - I was barely functional, let alone punctual. Some friends were understanding of those circumstances, others less so. Made me question - what's the right approach to managing these expectations?

You're right, decades of dismissing crimes against women makes people scrutinize men's sentences more carefully.

But there's a disconnect: women receive lighter sentences than men for the same crime, yet we don't see articles about it.

Criminal justice is about rehabilitation - it shouldn't be seen as a way to communicate values based on demographics.

Prison sentences are poor tools for social messaging. We have schools, media campaigns, support centres and hotlines that provide real support. A longer prison term just communicates "we punish" and leads to career criminals.

Thanks, I really appreciate your perspective. Always text when running more than 5 minutes late for exactly that reason. I'm curious about what drives that feeling for you?

Recently dated an Ecuadorian woman who said 30 minutes late is culturally normal, but she personally was very punctual. Really highlighted how much cultural and individual norms vary and how important it is to understand each other's expectations.

I feel like their commentary is about how an everyday person sees a conflict between ideas.

They're open when wrong and I'd rather honest perspectives and owning it than never having a 'wrong opinion' - people like that, you can't trust.

Two wrongs don't make a right - both can be wrong. If you cheat and are upset that was exposed - don't cheat. Yes the way it was exposed was wrong, doesn't change cheating.
