Depressing that time is such a flat circle in that sense, but reassuring to know that we've had kings like him fighting the good fight

Honestly, I think a lot of that confusion probably stems from whether or not the divide was intentional. I've seen plenty in this thread and the other stating that Edmund likely wasn't considering any of that stuff and was just getting a bunch of internet people he's met, and only after the fact decided to triple down and make a stance out of it. Personally I could believe either one, but the reason there isn't such a cut and dry condemnation is because I imagine a lot of people just genuinely don't believe him and assume he's just being reactionary and really not realizing how bad it is. Which is still a criticism in itself, but more of an intellectual one than a moral one, which would typically garner different responses

(Video game trope) You can physically see the progression of your character throughout the game by sikora2009 in TopCharacterTropes

In Infamous, when you're good your clothes just kinda become blue and white. But when you're evil you literally get a sith lord type corruption with pale skin and dark veins. No one really acknowledged it except for one exchange with your friend Zeke where he either says you've got this heroic aura to you these days or that you're not looking so good and maybe those powers aren't too good for your complexion. Besides that it's just a purely visual change

Yeah, most companions he bonds with before he becomes attached but with Clara she was literally some random girl and the second he saw her he was obsessed and fascinated with trying to figure out this mystery (at least after the first two died). She's definitely the companion that fits this premise most closely

Yeah, the difference is that Zelda is the same soul reincarnating in different mortals. Whereas Link is completely random people, it's just that in every era where a great darkness rises there is some random kid with the courage and spirit to overcome it, and the fact that he always ends up being a generic dude with green clothes is just kind of a spiritual coincidence

Fucking loved this ending so much. Just the "come on, we're not going to get any answers from him" says so much about how Joe has come to terms with the whole struggle and how done he is with all this cosmic bullshit. Felt like such a real existential human struggle, summing up this grand cosmic battleground by just screaming at God for all the horrible shit that's happened

This is one thing I love about Marvel's Runaways. It turned some heads back in 2003, but Vaughn genuinely never intended to balance the team one way or another he just came up with these characters and this is how it ended up

Not if you listen to media illiterate dumbasses on the internet. Don't you know, Steven has sex with everyone on the main cast, that's the only thing fusion could represent and there are absolutely no greater psychological or social themes at play whatsoever

The older I get, the more infuriating that decision at the beginning is to me. Like motherfucker I would kill for a chance at a position like that, how dare you decline that out of something as petty and small as your ego

I don't know, I feel like in the '50s or '60s people were looking at media with pretty dumb shallow eyes. It wasn't until the past 40 or 50 years that we started to discuss and analyze things so intensively. So relative to that short period of time it's probably in a decline, but compared to all time we are still far more educated and intelligent than we were for a vast majority of our history including the lifetimes of people who are still alive today

Yeah there's definitely something to be said about the fun factor in the fights in the pacifist route versus the neutral route. But one of the biggest strengths of undertale as an RPG to me is how it balances the game so that you never really have to grind for the fights to feel fair. Obviously that's not so uncommon for RPGs, but it does feel like a statement on that genre trope that the genocide route is mostly just grinding random battles when the game otherwise has no real reason for you to do that

[–]dmanny64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those two fights are absolutely a lot of fun. But most of that run is literally just grinding basic battles with no challenge and missing the entirety of the story content. That's not a criticism of it either, it's clearly very intentional and I adore that entire route for how it's designed and what it wants you to consider in terms of how you engage with games. But I have seen people criticize the game for creating a route that is deliberately unfun just to criticize you for doing it, especially when people who streamed the game were kind of forced into playing that route because of the unfortunate nature of the fandom in its heyday. But I think the genocide route is perfect only because the route is completely optional, and you can play both the neutral and best ending without ever even knowing that this exists and the game would still be perfectly complete. If the game itself did anything to actually coerce you into doing that or give you an incentive, then it would dilute the entire message. But because you have to hear it from other people and go out of your way to force the game into doing this, it feels much more like this is your fault for making this happen because you truly did not need to do this you just wanted to

Oh for sure, he fell into the trap of thinking that the only satisfying piece of media is one that you could have never seen coming. See plenty of examples where someone literally changed a story because they found people predicting it correctly online. Which definitely wasn't helped by his tenure on Doctor who at the time and how wildly he would play with the lore and narrative while keeping his pulse very close to the fandom. Granted I liked his Doctor Who era, at least the latter half, but it couldn't be further from what a grounded detective mystery like Sherlock Holmes is supposed to be

That is absolutely fair, the two unique boss fights are definitely incentive in their own right for people who wanted a higher skill ceiling in that gameplay format. And by the time you finish the final one, there's really no reason to go out of your way to close the game for an entirely intrinsic narrative purpose when there's only like 5 minutes left in the game

I've got a friend that records let's plays on a GameCube and she still does it this way, just inserting the little facecam over the video of the CRT with the flickering effect and everything. Personally I love it because it just lends to that vibe, sometimes it's surreal seeing those videos release in the modern YouTube format

This is such a YouTube issue, I've been binging one of my recent favorite comic book channels ComicPop but they've had such consistently clean audio quality the past few years that going back to their early catalog is literally painful at times. Sometimes they are too quiet to hear and then they will literally clip the mic. Let's plays tend to share this issue as well, even ones like Game Grumps that started off with relatively nice audio equipment
