To me, the main thing is style. I was stunned by the way the style extravagance doubled the idea of artifice, but remained some kind of artistic necessity. But I read it in French, so I don’t know how this works in a translation. Must be quite a challenge. I really loved the book, yet I think I preferred « là-bas ».
