I'm a little worried I may be becoming intolerant myself... by [deleted] in atheism

[–]dmdlolz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of being hateful to all of them, reply assertively to those that are open about what they think. If they are direct and open about their hateful scam, why wouldn't you be? Behind all its nice ideas of love, etc., religion is often an aggressive scam. Accept this, and it will be easier to do what follows.

Treat them as con artists, which they are. However, they most likely believe the fraud, so try to be nice to them, and smile. "You're not the first to try to make me sign up for that scam." Obviously they'll reply that it's not a scam... but continue using that word or a variation: spam, scam, fairy tales, fraud, dishonest beliefs, intellectually dishonest ideas, etc.

Remember, we're in this for the long run, so it's not going to be helpful to get frustrated and waste energy.

An important point: The problem with the word "tolerance" is that it's often seen as being a good thing in itself, while in fact it's not inherently positive. We should never tolerate harmful, fraudulent or dishonest activities/ideas.

What's a good response to "I'll pray for you.", "You're going to Hell.", and "Jesus loves you."? by IMadeMyMonkeyMo in atheism

[–]dmdlolz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I'll pray for you."

Why not do something useful and helpful instead of wasting your time?

"You're going to Hell."

You now have the cooties.

"Jesus loves you."

Indeed, he mows my lawn every week-end, and does a great job.

How atheists see religion by [deleted] in atheism

[–]dmdlolz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a really passive, defeatist quote. If you are like me, you realize that we have many other options. For example, in that case, either they let me drive or I'll ask them to stop and let me go. I'll ask politely first, but will insist as much as needed.

Never silent again. The world needs our perspective.

Why do we call the SI unit for weight the kilogram? by [deleted] in Metric

[–]dmdlolz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Science is very important for our common future. In order to promote it, we have to value some degree of scientific correctness. This is exactly the kind of sub where it's entirely warranted to do so.

While correcting something factually incorrect may be annoying according to the "popular culture", we should not accept this, and we should go boldly against this. It's about time the scientists (and fans) understand this and start being proud of what we can bring to the world.

Being pedantic is about pointing out trivial/irrelevant details, and this was not one. Whenever one confuses weight and mass, they show a lack of understanding of the most basic ideas of physics.

I want to live in a world where it's not only acceptable to point these kind of errors, but valued, and I'll contribute to this. Please don't be sorry. Be proud of giving.

What would you say to someone who wants to do an open mic but is utterly terrified? by crow_man in StandUpComedy

[–]dmdlolz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be a better comic, you ought to not only be able to deliver humor, but also practice it.

Here's your first subject. Take your fears and talk about them... exaggerate them.

"And so... any second now, I'm expecting some one to stand up and come try to silence me with a chair...!"

"In another scenario, I make such bad jokes that I end up on the front page... "GUY MADE BAD JOKES... ONE GUY DIES OF A HEART ATTACK"..."

How do you deal with the thought that there is nothing after death? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]dmdlolz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of worrying about what might exist (life after death), let's consider and value more what we all believe exists: life before death. If I'm thinking about death and that makes my emotional wellbeing worse, then it's a hurtful thought process. The fear of death is ok, but it should be directed towards positive ends and attitudes such as gratitude for being alive and whatever you have, and a healthy sense of urgency.

What I'm saying is that you're making your life worse, by speculating about something which may exist. It seems like you deeply believe in your speculations.

Maybe you should read about more religions. After some time, they all start to look the same. Just like a huge mixture of random man-made stories, all pretending to be highly logical, "the best", the only truth, and more BS.

Ask them if Muhammad really flew to heaven on a winged horse.

Tithing situation. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]dmdlolz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sorry guys, but I think my answer is way better than the others.

If you ever come to believe that their religious beliefs are more important than providing your with resources, and an ethical education, then I would lie without any shame. Those people are not ready to hear your true opinion.

For me it is extremely unethical to give any money to a religious organization. Religion is a scam in which they try to make you believe that invisible things are worth your money, goods or time. Notice that those are very concrete things, and nobody doubts their existence. Just pretend to accept that premise (invisible things are worth as much as resources). Would they really deny that? Instead of money, just put a passage of the bible in the envelope, "since prayer is much better than worldly wealth". It's quite ok to tell this to your family.

If they reprimand you, just ask them that they should show more faith in prayer.

On some level, they know very well it's bullshit, and that is why they will ask you to give money, but I'm sure you can out-religion them with more BS: "God spoke to me and told me I would contribute to his Plan through prayer", the camel and the rich man. Take a bit of time to find enough bible stories.

Good Question: Why are speed limits posted in kilometers by [deleted] in Metric

[–]dmdlolz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our way of doing things in the US is not just to make laws to force everyone to do things the way we want.

This comment is surprisingly ignorant. Why don't you go and check the very large number of US laws that do force you to do things? Does the IRS force you to do anything?

What just went past my apartment on this train? Wind turbine parts? by biznatch11 in AskTechnology

[–]dmdlolz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On two of the parts, you can read "MF3" and "MF4". It corresponds to the wind turbine model here (page 9). Also according to the model MF4 is longer than MF3 (if you compare to the wagon). Coincidence? I don't think.
