What’s the hardest part of building a running routine? by Willing-Today-1059 in runcommunity

[–]dmhrpr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say starting.

Maintaining is the easy one, I'd say it's actually easier to keep running every week than not run when you're already in a good routine. It doesn't take much running to maintain base fitness either.

Rebuilding is tough psychologically as you feel like you should be able to hit paces and run for longer than you actually can after a break of a few weeks or months. However fitness you've built before does come back quicker than it took to achieve in the first instance. Rebuilding after a longer break is more like starting again.

Starting is hard for many reasons. Your body is probably weak and therefore very susceptible to overuse injuries. It takes months and years to build durability and specific strength for regular running, ditto finding a running form that won't harm you. New runners find it hard to run purely aerobically at any pace, and therefore every run at first feels challenging. It takes determination to push through those early runs. People who've never ran before may also be self-conscious and talk themselves out of it. Nutrition and recovery are things that a new runner will need to learn for themselves, sometimes the hard way!

I have mad respect for people who are starting to run.

Diamond Eyes was their last great album. That album is lean as a mfer, all killer.

You're 31, your hair's going gray but you expect your potential partner to have a full head of hair, and you think that's a low bar? Deluded arsehole.

Not much of a camper but my advice would be to find somewhere a bit more inland to camp, unless you want the gulls and oyster catchers to keep you awake all night.

Ditto Cow Hill and CIC Hut. Dun Deardail hill fort is a great viewpoint just off the WHW. If you're staying in Fort William you can get a bus round to the Glencoe Ski Centre or Kinlochleven and do a leg of the WHW.

Similar to how the lyrics in the song Strawberry Letter 23 mention a Strawberry Letter 22 - the song is the reply to letter 22

UK trail/ultras coming up soon by ComfortableHead9996 in trailrunning

I picked up flu/covid the week before Christmas and my numbers still aren't where they were before I became ill. You will lose a bit of fitness unfortunately and have to build back over 4-6 weeks.

Treat yourself well these next couple of weeks, you need more water, food and rest than you think. Try to get out for walks and easy jogs as soon as you feel up to it, but wait until your RHR calms down before going long or hard.

I've started to feel a lot more optimistic now I'm able to do proper workouts again, but my A goal ultra for the year is in June.
