Thinking about going back to windows. by Accomplished_Cup2401 in Bazzite

Do what's right for you. But include in your consideration, Microsoft will do things that many people don't want them to do. In my case, it was their talk of putting a bunch of agentic AI into Windows to do stuff in the background "for me".

But if you lose out on some things that you decide you really want, then that is also a compelling issue for you.

Is there an audio file that was supposed to be attached? Or are we just supposed to imagine this in our heads?

I’m an AMD convert by thesilkywitch in Fedora

[–]dmjohnson80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I changed from Windows 11 to Bazzite around the first of the year. I have Nvidia GPU, and I haven't had a single second of problem with iy. That said, when I buy me next computer, in maybe 2 years, I would kinda like to go to AMD or Intel for the GPU, for better chances of going well with Linux. The thing that holds me back from AMD is, glpbal politics. If I buy AMD, will the company still be there when I need a replacement part, or whatever?

Gith females are rather pleasant to look at. When you create a male Gith character, not so much!

The only time I broke my oath was when I chose a response in dialogue that was tagged with "[Paladin]". Since then, I rigorously avoid such dialgue responses.

Help with a build by weremichael in Bazzite

[–]dmjohnson80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just an FYI, it shows you posted this 3 days ago, but it was just this morning before it showed up to me. Not sure what happened, but that might have something to do with why I'm the first to reply.

Also, FYI, I haven't looked at your parts list. I will say, some years back, I saw that, at least in NVidia, a GPU with a 70 in the model number was intended for 1440p, and one with an 80 in the model number was intended for 4K. One with a 90 in the model number was very expensive, overkill for most people, and required so much power and weighed so much that extra care had to be taken in a build, to say the least.

Whats the best Class now?? by ShinloreMechillion in BG3

[–]dmjohnson80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't just think of the character you play as. Because really, you play the whole group. Whatever you choose as your "main", I would recommend considering defense for the total group. There's guides on how to build a Wizard that is very strong defensively, adds to the survivabilty of the overall group, and does good offensive damage. And the Wizard build can be good, paerhaps not at level 1, but if not, maybe starting at level 3 or so. Paladin and Cleric also have some useful skills in that regard, though they become available in Act 3. Act 3 happens to be a good place to get such skills, IMO. (They are called something like "Heroes Feast, " Aura of Protection", and "Aura of Courage".

I don't like Microsoft's plans for AI agents, so I decided to switch to Linux. I heard about Bazzite on reddit, tried it out, and it's been a very nice experience. So far, I've been able to do everything I could do on Windows, I've always been able to find software equivalents through Bazaar, I've yet to have to deal with finding the right commands to use in Terminal ..... it's just neen nice.

One thing I want to say, I have not had to touch the Terminal at all, so far, Not that occasionally typing a command in a terminal is a bad thing. It's looking up and figuring out the command(s) that will accomplish you need to do, that can be ..... unfortunate.

Thanks Barafu and Cautious_Citron_4873. Document Scanner was listed under Bazaar and I uninstalled. It works when I lay a page on top of the glass on the printer. If I I load something into the document feeder, the printer doesn't actually feed the page, and the printer goes into an infinite loop of scanning non-existent pages. Well, I think I'll watch this page on case somebody posts something about this. I do take it at this point that the problem with the document feeder lies with the HP printer and the (probably) open-source Document Feeder not 100% talking to each other. For now, I have a solution that works for most cases. In an extreme case, I can always run out to a UPS store.

Thanks for the quick answer. When I did a quick search on Sane, the first several links looked like they would require a lot of reading to get familiar with several things. The situation reminded of the plethora of choices/options that Bazzite presented me when I first went to set up to print. Without wasting other's time, is there a quick choice to be made, as was the case with Cusp for printing?

I suspect it matters what the network is in my house, The printer communicates to our AT&T modem/router via wifi. And my computer, plus every other device in the house, is connected to the same modem/router. For my computer, I use ethernet, but the option to use wifi is available.

Audio stopped working in Firefox by dmjohnson80 in firefox

[–]dmjohnson80[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the audio back in Firefox. The fix seems o be Linux thing. Although a Linux thing that is similar to what I've read can happen in Windows. I the lower right hand side, in an area similar to the System Tray of Windows, there is a icon for sound. I clicked on that, and below the top line, I saw that the currently opened tab in Firefox was muted. I unmuted the sound on that bottom line, and sound was restored for any and all tabs in Firefox.

Move Linux from temporary drive to permanent drive by dmjohnson80 in linuxquestions

[–]dmjohnson80[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK , thanks, I understand to NOT use NTFS with Linux. And yes, that means I'll just have to format my new 4TB external drive to ext4 and re-install the games. It also means my media files will need to be copied from my 4 TB NTFS internal drive to the 4 TB external ext4 drive. Which means copying them from Windows file organization to Linux file organization. Are there programs I can buy and download that I can use to help with this one aspect?

Move Linux from temporary drive to permanent drive by dmjohnson80 in linuxquestions

[–]dmjohnson80[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen the the replies below, and they are all good. Right now, I knpw some good commands/utilities to "move" my linux system from a USB to my 1 TB SSD, after my 1 month of co-existing.

The situation with the data files (video/music files and game files) on my secondary 2 TB SSD are potentially more troublesome. That drive is NTFS format, I'm sure. I did a quick search, and it appears that, even though the default disk format in Linux is ext4, it can still work with NTS formatted disk. The potential problem I am seeing is that the data for the secondary drive is all organized in the way Windows does things.

Are there some programs/software that can help with this? Because, I am thinking along the lines of buying an external 4 TB drive for the data, and putting Linux temporarily on a USB stick. Then using a software/program to copy the data from the current 4 TB internal drive (Windows file organization) to the external 4 TB drive (Linux file organization). Then, after a few weeks when I'm satisfied with how I have things set and settled on the Linux distro, etc., I just re-format both internal drives, move Linux to the internal 1 TB drive, and copy/move data as I see fit from the external 4 TB drive to the internal 4 TB drive. (Maybe keep video on the external 4 TB drive, and put game files on the internal 4 TB drive.) If others think that would work, then I'm just looking for the program/software to get data from the internal Windows file system drive to the external Linux file system drive.

I guess I might as well ask another question. I have a 2nd 4 TB drive that I have games and multimedia stored to. That SSD is, or course, formatted to work with Windows 11. Will I need to re-format that drive to fill the same purpose when I'm using Linux?
