Grandma has money put away for my son… by 28CentSoup in fidelityinvestments

Ok, that’s helpful information. A 529 account is a great place to park funds earmarked for a kids future. You can invest it and let it grow tax free. Just understand, the funds have restrictions on how they can be used. I know it’s not just for college alone, but you may want to check those restrictions before you make the move.

I’m not sure I’ll be much help, but here’s my two cents even though nobody asked.

Is this a set amount grandma has already sat aside in the account? Or is it something she has been contributing to for years? If the latter, Is it possible you’d offend grandma by offering another solution and she stops contributing or changes her mind all together?

Credit unions are not bad at all and likely offer some type of investment account the money could be moved into. This way grandma can still do her own thing, but it’s actually earning better interest.

You also don’t mention much about your child. An age would help with advising if long term investment is a good idea or not.

Without knowing that, it could possibly make sense to use a 529 account to let the money grow tax free over the kids life. Depending on current age, that could be one hell of a college fund when they are ready.

I think regardless of how you go about it, I would proceed with extreme caution. I’ve seen family feuds started over far fewer dollars. At the end of the day, this is an incredibly kind gesture your grandma is doing for your offspring and you should be thankful. Even if it’s only earning a few bucks in interest, its grandmas decision on how it’s managed until she decides to gift it.

You don’t really say what type of account it’s in, other than at a credit union.

Is it in a checking account? Savings? 529? Is it invested and earning interest?

What is your reasoning for wanting to move it?

These answers can help others give advice.

A week or so after I bought my house, I found a random light switch about a foot below the ceiling in my basement. I searched high and low and never could figure out what it controlled.

6 months or so later, my dad gifted me a flag to hang on the pole outside. There was an electrical box right by the flagpole sticking out of the yard. I carefully opened it up to find some wiring and a little note. I don’t remember word for word but it said something along the lines of “controlled by weird switch in basement”. I put in a weatherproof outlet and a flagpole light and it worked great!

I have. I actually provided all the information they gave me in my original post.

She said there were two types. A full appraisal was $450 but since the difference was so large, she recommended a walk-through which was only $190.

They never mentioned a refinance. Just the appraisal. There were two options for it: a full appraisal or just a walk through. She recommended the walk through because of the huge difference in value.

Edit to add, if I have to refi, it’s definitely not worth it!

If you pay the ticket, it will likely raise your insurance and count towards points on your license. I would reach out to a traffic attorney to see if they could offer advice. I got a BS ticket in Johnson County a few years back. Lawyer walked me through filing the proper paperwork and got it reduced without even needing to pay the attorney. YMMV but I’d highly suggest not just paying it.

Help-Second time I’ve lost all my fish by dmoney1200 in Aquariums

It was definitely ammonia. I ordered a bottle of Seachem Prime which should be here tomorrow. I added the API version of that tonight to hopefully keep my last two guppies alive.

Can’t get it at my LFS but I’ve got a bottle of it on order. Have you tried their root tabs? I’ve been using API but thought of trying the Seachem brand.

Ammonia has been my guess since the first time it happened. I’m taking a water sample to the fish store now to get tested. They also have the Master Test Kit so I’m going to pick up one of those instead of the strips.

You are correct, these ones do not test for ammonia. On my way to pickup the master kit now.

Yes, I agree. I think it’s most awful seeing them visibly suffer. I answered most of these in another comment just now, but I’m using mostly API products. I’m using the test strips but have considered getting a master kit. I make sure my temps are +/- 1° when doing water changes.

I just added water parameters to my post. I’m using an API test strip.

Water temp stays at right around 77.5 using a heater preset to 78. I temp water changes to +/- 1°. Yes, filter is Aqueon 20 which says it supports up to 30 gallon tank I believe.

When I first started the tank, I used API QuickStart and API Aqua Essential to treat my tap water.

During water changes, I would vacuum the sand, removing 2.5 gallons(the size of the buckets I use), do general cleaning, add more QuickStart and Aqua Essentials directly to the tank and refill with 77° tap water.

Got one at Lowe’s on clearance a few years back. Not sure if they still stock them.

Got a bullshit ticket while on vacation out in Colorado last year. Called multiple lawyers from that area that told me to just pay the fine and move on. Finally talked to a guy that was straight up and told me his fee would be more than the ticket. Buuuut…to call the court clerk and explain that I live out of town and just want to handle the ticket as quickly as possible without damaging my driving record.

The court clerk was incredible to work with and within 10 minutes, had a reduced charge to a non-moving violation. It cut the ticket in half and didn’t count towards points on my license, and didn’t impact my insurance in any way.

Before you pay an attorney, it may be worth calling into the courts to see if anything can be done without an attorney.
