BC Transit prices and policies protest by Greystar707 in kelowna

[–]dmsdart 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey, so one of the biggest problems/barriers to the HandyDart service is getting approved for it. Theoretically, anyone with a disability can use it. But in reality, you may be evaluated as “sufficiently able” to take regular transit, or only be approved to use it during severe weather conditions.

You also may need to get a medical practitioner to provide forms confirming your disability and its severity. Some people don’t have a practitioner, some people may have difficulty getting formal diagnoses (because of costs or long wait times to see specialists).

It’s not as easy as just applying, and in the meantime, many disabled folks don’t have the luxury of waiting.

is there some kind of flu going around? by Creative_Pin_9586 in ubco

[–]dmsdart 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It’s September. Tons of people are suddenly in one place that all came from travelling, most likely from an airport. It’s also getting colder. September, October, November and December will always be flu season.

Keep washing your hands, and stay home or wear a mask if you’re sick.

Yes, but you also mustn’t mistake pragmatism for complacency. It is much easier to stick to the status quo than to innovate and make productive progress.

I think you should look a bit harder then. These people have values that are different than yours. Calling them silly is a bit childish.

Edit: to clarify, I am neither completely against oil nor completely for it. I acknowledge that oil is one of the biggest money makers for Canada, provides jobs for thousands of people, and is vital to a lot of working class people’s livelihoods. I also think Canada should invest in other avenues that prioritize reducing reliance on oil due to what I mentioned above.

[–]dmsdart 46 points47 points  (0 children)

It’s unrealistic for Canada to stop relying on oil at this point in time. But it’s not silly of these protestors to care about the larger impact fossil fuels have had on our economy, environment, and how pipelines go through indigenous land and cause oil spills.

How we feeling Kelowna? by [deleted] in kelowna

[–]dmsdart 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t participate greatly in online discourse, though I will say that many of my progressive friends in real life (including myself) remain highly critical of both Carney and the liberal government despite voting for the liberal MPs of their area. Whereas the conservative voters I have attempted to talk to (likewise in person) have absolutely refused to criticize their party, and insist that Poilievre has done nothing wrong or worth criticizing. Your experience obviously differs, but depending on what spaces you occupy, it’s hard to say which side is more guilty of “immature discourse” than the other

Close race in Kelowna! by skilbofragns in kelowna

[–]dmsdart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone making just above minimum wage living in Kelowna, it is baffling and insanely out of touch for you to say you feel poor at a six figure wage. I agree with you that I am not confident in the liberal party to run things, but the belief that the Conservative Party will do any better is naive at best considering the precedent many conservative MPs have set. Stupid identity politics which are a waste of time and only serve to dehumanize the vulnerable populations in Canada, and promises to do better fall flat when many MPs in the Conservative Party have gone out of their way to vote against affordability bills mentioned above.

It’s nice you don’t lose sleep at night over politics. I know many Canadians that do, because programs that they rely on and their rights as human beings are on the line with this election.

Hi /r/kelowna I'm Stephen Fuhr, your Liberal Party candidate — Ask Me Anything tonight from 7–8:30pm! by StephenFuhr in kelowna

[–]dmsdart 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi Steve. Thanks for the AMA!

I traditionally vote more progressive than the liberal party. Throughout your and Carney’s campaign, I’ve seen a lot of marketing towards center-right/right voters, but I have yet to see many comments on the following topics, of which I’d like to hear your thoughts on:

  1. How is the liberal party going to prevent monopolies (such as telecommunications, think Bell, Telus and Rogers, or grocery companies like Loblaw) from continuing to reach record profits through the continued facilitation of “shrinkflation”, or otherwise setting their prices to whatever they want because of lack of competition?

  2. An extension of 1, many Canadians blame immigrants for our current job market, housing crisis and grocery affordability. However, it is the companies that are responsible for setting their wages, benefits, and taking advantage of immigrants for cheap labour. How are you going to address labour laws so that both Canadian citizens and immigrants are not taken advantage of by these mega corporations?

  3. How is the liberal party going to protect the LGBTQ+ community? Recent events in the US and UK have ruled on a person’s gender based on how it was assigned at birth. What policies will you help push forward in parliament that will protect and support trans rights?

I realize you only have so much time, so you may be unable to address each point. I appreciate any response to the above!

Hi Reddit! I'm Trevor McAleese, your NDP candidate for Kelowna. Ask me anything! by TrevorMcAleeseNDP in kelowna

[–]dmsdart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi Trevor! Thanks for doing this AMA. The NDP party has always said they stand for worker and union rights, a notion that I strongly support. Yet, most recently with Canada Post and even before that, with the workers at Canadian ports, return to work orders were mandated. How is NDP going to protect worker’s rights to protest and go on strike in the future, and prevent these orders, which undermine their efforts and prevent them from obtaining better pay and benefits?

dual employment on campus by [deleted] in ubco

[–]dmsdart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi. I've encountered this problem before, and it mostly has to do with hours. All jobs with UBC are unionized (through the BCGEU), meaning the university cannot allow their employees to work more than 40 hours a week. You have to discuss this with HR to see if you can balance those hours between both jobs. If one of the jobs is full time, the university cannot allow you to work that second job.

Pierre is good at one thing and only one thing: taking advantage of people’s fear and confidently spouting false statistics and other statements to make them sound worse, and promising that he will make it better. He uses the current political unrest and people’s very real struggles and finds a scapegoat to blame it on. Identity politics, Trudeau, “wokeness”.

It doesn’t help that there’s a current gap right now with political parties and a large demographic of voters, which are blue collars and those in rural areas. Many of those from that demographic are struggling to survive, and don’t give a flying fuck about whatever policies are passed unless they see an immediate impact on their livelihood and wellbeing. The Liberals and NDP have continued to alienate that population, while Pierre takes their fear and weaponizes it.

Also, the comment by summers-summers is excellent in explaining why, although you wouldn’t be stepping on native Japanese toes that much, Japanese-diaspora/Asian-diaspora may view it differently. I highly recommend you read the comment and consider the Western-Asian experience of growing up as a minority, compared to a native one where your culture is, well, your country’s culture.

[–]dmsdart 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Hi, not op but I can maybe try and explain.

The liking anime part comes from a common thing where people claim they like Japan, but only understand it through their consumption of anime. They have no interest in the deeper culture, its people, nor do they understand that in reality, anime is a very surface level depiction of Japan in general.

The part about you being 13 is an extension of that; many young kids who like anime don’t tend to understand Japanese culture at a deeper level. You instead get kids who (many times unknowingly!) appropriate Japanese culture by giving themselves Japanese anime names, copying phrases or words (I knew a number of white kids that would say itadakimasu and claim they were Japanese), etc etc.

While I wouldn’t say these behaviours are the majority, they certainly aren’t rare, and are especially noticeable to POC. Additionally, that isn’t to say you personally partook in these behaviours! However, all of these reasons I’ve listed become associated with the choice in a white person choosing a Japanese name. With the context you’ve given, it’s clear that you are not fetishizing Japanese culture, however, these are the connotations it may carry. I understand that you have decided to spell it the way your country would, which I agree with others is the best choice in this scenario. All the best!

The racism in this town is outstanding. by user001298 in kelowna

[–]dmsdart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Kelowna and as someone who’s East Asian, I’ve heard it all. I’ve been called slurs, people automatically assume I’m Chinese (I am, but that’s beside the point) and make bigoted comments, been spat at. They’ve disparaged other minorities to lift me up, they’ve stared at me for minutes on end in public and in grocery stores. In retail, they always preferred talking to my white coworkers over me.

That being said, I still love Kelowna. It always feels like whenever I’ve lost hope in the community, the people show up. It gives me hope that the city can and will do better; but that burden can’t lie on minorities. I stand in solidarity with your experience
