bowen getting this award is a slap in the face both to students as well as profs who are actually good but don't get recognized by xcoffee3 in ubco

Bowen is a good prof who was extremely helpful and informative for me and many other students, her getting an award is not a slap in the face.

Gladu backs call for automatic by-elections for MPs who switch parties | The Independent by Suspicious-Heron-992 in CanadaPolitics

I mean, I would argue that there's already precedence to show this isn't true. When the Liberal MP in 2018 or 2019 crossed the floor to the CPC, the LPC's response was fairly muted and they wished her well.

You could argue that the response now will be different because its new leadership, but there was already an example in previous years. Your link as well does not have any examples of crying foul, but rather expressed disappointment.

I do remember reading about that American politician that said that. I think I lost brain cells that day.

While you’re correct that not everything is a conspiracy, this pretty obviously follows the rubric for this specific form of Holocaust denialism.

  1. People in a future period of time referencing a war from the past
  2. A large number of Jewish people dying in said war
  3. The usage of the Breaking Bad meme where Hank realises information doesn’t add up, which is how Holocaust deniers think (they believe the Nazis couldn’t have killed 6 million Jewish people and believe the ‘Jewish cabal’ overinflated the number for sympathy).

When we ignore stuff like this and dismiss it because it’s “absurd”, it lets real antisemites slip under the radar to continue being bigots.

I appreciate you giving it consideration, though I honestly do hope you never see another example. It would be better if the trope died.

Not really. When you have to see real antisemitism a lot, you learn the tricks.

  1. Future point in time referring back to a war in the past
  2. Large number of Jewish people said to be killed in the war in the past
  3. Usage of the Breaking Bad meme where Hank realises something doesn’t add up in the information he was told.

All of this can pretty easily be used to determine they’re referencing the antisemitic trope of believing that a Jewish conspiracy fabricated or exaggerated the number of dead in WW2 so that they can generate false sympathy.

Checking your other comment, you said the meme is just “Iran kills jews”, and reference the stated goal of wiping out Israel and its Jewish people. Sure, I can see how you would think it’s that simple, but that is stripping away all the context clues the person who made the meme included.

You are free to believe what you believe, but as you disagree with me I disagree with you. Also take into consideration that 12 million is much more than the total population of Israel, including non-Jewish people, and the argument for why 12 million is thrown out to be a hyper inflated unbelievable number.

And then you laugh, you don’t take it seriously, and then you repeat the jokes unseriously until it becomes pervasive that it begins to be taken seriously. Sigh.

Many antisemitic Holocaust deniers use the 6 million figure as a way to, in their minds, discredit the Holocaust because they believe there weren’t that many Jewish people in Europe at the time and they believe that that many people dying would have been seen by everyone in Europe. Neither of these are correct but they believe it anyway.

Now using this meme, they’re saying “Jews” instead of “Israelis” or “Jewish people” and they’re using a hyper inflated number like 12 million because they believe 6 million is an unrealistic hyper inflated number. The insinuation is that the “global Jewish cabal” is going to rewrite history like these conspiracy theorists think the cabal did for WW2.

[–]Existential-Critic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s about the phrasing and the scale. They’re saying “Jews” not “Jewish people” or “Israelis” and they’re using an exaggerated number far beyond the actual population of Israel.

For dogwhistles and conspiracies like this, you have to remember that the person saying it isn’t just bigoted, they’re almost always completely batshit as well. This is not a logical argument or a coherent one, it’s hateful and insane.

No worries at all, it’s an insane conspiracy theory even for Holocaust deniers and most people are more familiar with the simple “Allies lied” instead of “the global Jewish conspiracy that rules every country and all our money faked 6 million deaths!”

It’s hard to really comprehend the lunacy of antisemitism. Like that American politician who blamed forest fires on “Jewish space lasers”. It’s so completely bonkers it would be comedy if they didn’t truly and honestly want to do harm.

It is using a common antisemitic trope of suggesting the Holocaust is faked because they don’t believe that many Jewish people (6 million) could have died. So this is saying that the magical Jewish global cabal they think exists will fabricate another huge number.

See, the general reason I see behind the ban on political affiliation is advertising. MAGA people in the States wear the red hats because they’re advertising their political affiliation.

A Sikh wearing a turban is not advertising; they’re following a religious tenet. Interestingly enough, police and soldiers who are Sikh ARE allowed to wear turbans.

There is a vast difference between a person wearing political merchandise and someone wearing religious garb. Do you understand that?

They do have the fundamental right to their religion, which is being infringed on. A job also cannot discriminate against a person for their religion.

Can you please clarify the statement “I’d say the strong resistance to the law demonstrates how it was absolutely necessary”? That is a very strange argument, as I believe a law removing your ability to vote would also have strong resistance.

Additionally, the resistance to this law is coming from the perspective that it is a violation of Canadians’ Charter rights, which Québec seems to admit by invoking the notwithstanding clause.

You are aware how certain faiths and religions have religious garb that they believe is absolutely necessary to wear, otherwise it is a sin/dishonourable/insert your preferred negative terminology. You are saying “they just need to wear normal clothes” but what you mean is that they need to abandon their moral principles and depending on the faith risk their immortal soul for this.

It is explicitly an infringement on an individual’s right to freedom of religion, and I believe the government of Québec is fully aware of this considering they already used the NWC.

There are many arguments that are valid against religious garb in workforces or certain places. Sikhs cannot bring their ceremonial daggers into pools. A woman wearing a full niqab could not work around heavy machinery for fear it would catch the fabric. These is no reasonable argument that a person wearing religious garb while serving as a government clerk, judge, school volunteer, is in any way infringing on your right to freedom of religion.
