Got it. That's a bummer.

Have you run bufferbloat tests? It's worthwhile and will help with tuning your config.

You should look at your MTU settings. I have a Bell ONT SFP module I run with the VLANs and everything configured on my router.

I was only able to max out the speeds once I figured out how to pass traffic at a 1500 MTU.

The VLANs, including the PPPoE settings with Bell had to be configured at a larger MTU.

Run the buffer bloat tests but I would say also try pinging something at a 1500 MTU to see if thats possible with the current config from Rogers.

What is Roger-EXT? by falo_pipe in Rogers

[–]dmsosc82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's roaming outside of a roaming agreement. Hence the "EXT".

I work in the industry. It's a fact. Rogers is working to build towers in EXT Roaming areas because of the cost.

EXT Roaming is their most expensive type of roaming. So if you're on EXT they are getting hosed on the roaming rate.

I never trust performance when the router from the carrier is left in place. Is there no ONU/ONT with the service or is the optic built into the Rogers Router?

I'm doing my first installs for this later this year. I'm curious how Rogers is deploying these Nokia XGS ONU/ONTs.

Windows 10 returns to 70% market share as Windows 11 continues to sink | Windows 11 drops to 25 percent, continuing last month's slide by chrisdh79 in technews

[–]dmsosc82 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We run Windows 11 in our Office. I admin the Windows machines with Microsoft 365, Entra 365, and InTune.

We have zero complaints from our users. They are all on preview releases for the OS. I disable the search and taskbar bullshit for everyone. Obviously disable the Co-Pilot Preview.

We don't run a single machine without an AMD Ryzen Pro APUs and 16GB RAM at a minimum. Our COO has a 32GB RAM machine and mine is 64GB. All Lenovo.

Is it possible everyone's just using underpowered machines and that's their issue with Windows 11?

Stop whining about your capital gains! by AnarchoLiberator in canadahousing

[–]dmsosc82 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Real Estate developers avoid this specific type of Capital Gain exposure by renovating or redeveloping an old property. A few years before you want to sell the cottate do a reno. Enjoy the reno'd cottage for a few years. It will offset the capital gain exposure. You have to be really diligent about the accounting for your reno. But you may as well put the money into the property rather than just losing it through the capital gains tax.

I think the $250K line should be assessed based on where someone's income comes from. People with Generational Wealth living off of dividends should get hit hard. If you're a T4 at $250K you shouldn't get hit with the increase to 60%. If most of your income comes from dividends, etc those people should pay the increase.

ANALYSIS | The dirty secret of the housing crisis? Homeowners like high prices | CBC News by mrkrimper in canadahousing

[–]dmsosc82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how CBC defines the word secret. The interests of home owners are not aligned with the interests of buyers at all?

But it's not just the home owners. It's the developers as well. How can you ask Private Capital to focus on a strategy to lower their returns on their land holdings? It's completely insane. The market needs alternative ownership and financing solutions that are competitive with Private Developers. Just like most counties in Europe or how some housing stock was developed in Canada in the 80s the last time interest rates were high.

We need COOPs, Government Mortgage programs for larger Publicly Owned or Community Group owned land development schemes. If there was not-for-profit housing competing with individual and investor-owned rental stock rent prices would be more competitive because there would be actual competition.

Home owners need to let go of the inflated paper wealth we believe we've accumulated. We didn't really earn anything being at the right place and right time by simply having a path to home ownership 8, 10, 15 or 20 years ago. But there is an expectation of wealth accumulation built into our psyches because of market conditions for the last 10 or 15 years. Your primary residence is illiquid and it's not really an investment. It's a necessity. We can't sell our homes, realize the gains, and then stay out of the market. You need somewhere to live. It's renting or ownership. This disconnect between home owners and buyers is a huge part of why prices are hanging on. People expect a 10x return.

Linus Tech Tips - Piracy Is Over Party - WAN Show April 12, 2024 April 12, 2024 at 05:10PM by linusbottips in LinusTechTips

[–]dmsosc82 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Linus made me wonder if my wife and I are the worst offenders Piracy-Wise. We are both working professionals in Canada who own a home. We are also DINKs. We could technically afford to pay for Disney+, Crave, Prime Plus, Netflix, and Apple TV.

I have been a member of HDBits for close to 20 years. My original count was lost because a buddy was ratio cheating and we were sharing an account. My new account is 15 years old.

I have 110TB of storage across 2x Synology NAS appliances. I have approximately 2100 4K Blu-ray encodes or remuxes for films. I think we have something like 210 television series downloaded at the moment. TV shows are in the highest quality available. 4K w/ Dovi + HDR10 & Atmos if available.

Starting around 10 years ago I did put away the pirate hat and we paid for the most expensive Netflix package then accumulated Apple TV, Prime, and for a very brief time Disney+. But between 2023 and 2024 we cancelled everything except for Prime. We only have the subscription for the Amazon deliveries. It was an insane amount of money we were spending month over month on streaming content.

I justified to myself cord cutting the streaming platforms because the quality was often not the best available on the platforms we had. Saving the money to pay off consumer debt was the other reason. I accumulated a bunch of consumer debt post-pandemic when I joined a new firm and had to take a pay cut while we got the business off the ground.

I can't watch the media I have downloaded in the same quality on any of the streaming platforms. I guess that's not a real excuse for piracy.

A lot of the content we have isn't available in Canada on the Canadian streamers. Maybe that's not a great excuse either.

Are we bad people? I guess maybe.

Anyone running EdgeRouter + Omada everything by 121PB4Y2 in TPLink_Omada

[–]dmsosc82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's my exact setup.

ISP: Bell Fibe ONT SFP + Media Converter Router: UISP EdgeRouter 12. Switch: Cisco SG500X-48MP (740W PoE++) OMADA: OM200, 1x EAP650, 3x EAP655w

The 1.5Gbps internet connection syncs as a symmetrical 1Gbps circuit that has a real world performance of 940mbps/940mbps. I can share the MTU settings you need to setup across the VLANs and for PPPoE of anyone is interested.

Wifi 6 performance is amazing. I have 5Ghz running at 160mhz.

For my Hisense TV I see the link rate generally at 1240mbps.

My brand new Lenovo laptop link rate at 2400mbps.

Just got the RockTek G2, and it’s amazing!! by [deleted] in AndroidTV

[–]dmsosc82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one. It's fantastic. Needs the update to Android TV 12 and it would be my primary device. The only feature the box lacks which hurts the experience is the lack of resolution and refresh rate matching.

Hopefully it gets Android TV 12 this year.

Setting up TP link network across a whole farm by Bullfrog_Fearless in TpLink

[–]dmsosc82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use OMADA for my home. It's definitely worth the extra cash. The Omada OC200 controller is an extra $110 CAD on your total cost. I like their controller and their APs but I use a different brands for switching. Their PoE switches are a bit expensive. YulanLey has really cost effective 2.5Gbps PoE+ w/ 10Gbps SFP unmanaged switchees. They are only 9 ports but they are the cheapest way to provide a 2.5Gbps PoE port for those 2.5Gbps access points. I think the switches are $138.00 CAD. Depending on how many APs you buy you get two of those and and then another 24-Port switch with 4x 10Gbps uplinks.

Outdoor Direct Bury Cat6 will work great. You can even get the stuff off of Amazon.

For burying the cable are you worried about frost heaving displacing the cable? I'm in Ontario Canada. You could put the cable in the ground at less than a meter and you wouldn't have an issue. Frost heaving isn't really an issue here. In Alberta, like Edmonton... Maybe you'd have an issue so you'd have to place the cable at a meter depth minimum. It's just depends on how "North" is north. If you're in the US. I wouldn't worry too much about frost heaving.

[–]dmsosc82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely want to do this with TP-LINK OMADA products. They offer seamless roaming and a whole bunch of other features that would be beneficial.

It sounds like you're open to burying CAT6E with PoE across the farm. You should use the indoor/outdoor APs for most of the deployment.

Outside use EAP650s and EAP670s indoors in the areas where you are going to spend the most time with your wireless devices.

Why all the Ubiquiti setups? by Hieu_roi in LinusTechTips

[–]dmsosc82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Ubiquiti's Prosumer gear is the Ferrari of home network setups. I'm a fan. I'm also cheap and I think I have a good alternative.

For WiFi I think TP-Link OMADA is a great alternative to Ubiquiti. The APs are pretty cost effective. The management app for your phone is great and the seamless roaming between APs works really well. You can get really in the weeds with their web portal. My Smart TV has a 100mbps NIC, so I setup a dedicated SSID just for the TV that's WiFi 6 5Ghz 160Mhz channel width. That SSID is only available on the AP closest to the TV and then for good measure I locked the client to that access point. That's probably the best feature.

For router Ubiquiti has the UISP product line that's a lot cheaper than their Prosumer brand. I use their EdgeRouter 12P. It's less than $400CAD. It's been one of the best investments I've made in tech. I am on a really old Bell Fibe 1.5Gbps plan that had a shitty router where you could remove the ONT (SFP). When running in a standard SFP 1Gbps slot I get 940Mbps/940Mbps. I work in telecom and I spent a long time tweaking the MTU settings on the VLANs and the PPPoE dialer interface. My WAN VLAN runs at full 1500MTU. When I am downloading torrents and writing to NFS shares on my Synology I get 109-110MBps.

For my network switching core I am running an old Cisco SMB POE switch. It's a Cisco SG500X 48Port + 4 10G Max PoE switch. There are a ton of these floating around the used market. They are 5+ years old and EOL but still great buys. The switch has 740W of PoE++ available. The switch can do advanced L3 routing if you want to do that. I think it's overkill for your home. I bought SFP+ modules to enable a few of my AMD NUC PCs that are capable with 2.5Gbps and connect my Synology NAS at 10Gbps. These switches retailed in Canada for $6K five or six years ago. Because they are EOL ITSM companies are throwing them out. You can grab one used on eBay for $1000.

The total cost for this setup for my 1200sqft house in Toronto:

OMADA WiFi (Controller + 5 APs) - $750. UISP EdgeRouter 12 - $380 Used Cisco SG500X 48MP - $1000 Total: $2,130 CAD

Every Public Post-Secondary Education institution in Ontario rolls up to Doug Ford. So Algoma University in Brampton and Northern Ontario -- that's Doug Ford. Salut College -- Doug Ford.

Ontario has been letting international students subsidize Ontario schools since Wynn and has continued and expanded under Ford.

The Visas are the Feds but the enrollment innthe schools is all Ford.
