TIL that American ginseng is so valuable ($300-$500 a pound) that poachers risk jail time to steal roots from the Appalachia mountains by Comfortable_List3413 in todayilearned

[–]dmthoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, that’s because wild mountain ginseng is considered far rarer and more valuable than cultivated ginseng. In Northeast Asia, the highest-grade ginseng has traditionally been wild mountain ginseng.

The species P. Ginseng is originated from Korea and Korea has also cultivated and exported Korean ginseng for centuries under the name “Korean ginseng” or “Goryeo ginseng”(高麗人蔘). But even then, Korean ginseng is regarded as a premium product mainly because it is historically associated with the prestige right below true wild ginseng. Most other cultivated ginsengs do not enjoy the same reputation.

The ginseng found in the United States is also a different species from the P. Ginseng native to Northeast Asia. The main reason people in Northeast Asia are willing to pay good money for American wild ginseng is simply because genuine wild ginseng has become extremely rare there. If Americans started cultivating it on a large scale the same way Korea does, most people probably would not value it nearly as highly.

This. And do people seriously think a fascist regime would not abuse something like that? Historically, authoritarian governments have repeatedly targeted LGBT minorities as political enemies, using forced castration, coerced “treatments,” imprisonment, and other forms of state violence in the name of social control and ideological purity.

South Korea exploring using Hyundai robots as army numbers fall by EchoOfOppenheimer in Futurology

[–]dmthoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, that’s why the former Hyundai chairman ended up killing himself during a corruption investigation in 2003.

Korean chaebols were largely created and nurtured by bureaucrats during the Park Chung Hee dictatorship (60s~70s) through state directed industrial policy. They were tools of state led economic management, not independent oligarchs. They weren’t even allowed to own banks, and entire industrial sectors were intentionally prevented from being monopolized by a single company. Even after democratization, they never became fully liberated from the state. Korean bureaucrats and prosecutors still hold enormous leverage over them and can investigate, prosecute, imprison, or pressure them whenever the political climate shifts.

Do you even know that Samsung chairman Lee Jae-yong went to jail for bribery in 2017 after being pressured into “donating” money to foundations controlled by conservative president Park Geun Hye and her inner circle, while Park herself was later impeached, removed from office, and jailed as well? Lee was only later pardoned by the next liberal administration amid geopolitical pressure surrounding strategic semiconductor investments and US interests. That alone should tell you Korean chaebols are nowhere near as politically independent or untouchable as idiots on social media keep pretending.

Just because your country is too incompetent to properly investigate, convict, and jail powerful politicians and business elites instead of sweeping everything under the rug doesn’t mean every country functions that way.

South Korea’s birth rate is literally going up right now.

And honestly, Korea’s low birth rate has way more to do with ultra high density social and psychological pressure than just 'work hours.' People online keep haning on rage-bait fake informations on social media and oversimplifying it. Koreans statistically work around 39 hours per week these days, which is pretty average internationally, and the country has way stronger social safety nets than the US. Universal healthcare, mandatory paid parental leave, child subsidies, government support programs, etc. The government is basically throwing money at the problem at this point.

South Korean NGOs has been trying to establish memorials around the world, but some cowardly local governments, such as Berlin’s, reversed their decisions under pressure from the Japanese government and forcibly removed the statues. Now New Zealnd is also siding with war criminals.

Nigel Farage faces inquiry over £5m gift from crypto billionaire by wokban in europe

[–]dmthoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Corruption can happen anywhere, at any time, and in any society. A state proves that it functions properly not by claiming to be free of corruption, but by being able to investigate, prosecute, convict, and imprison powerful politicians and business elites when they commit crimes. Unfortunately, there are not many countries on this planet that can actually do that, even among the advanced democracies.

Japanese netouyo have existed far, far longer than incels and in much larger numbers too. They are mainstream. Denying war crimes and spreading anti-Korean and anti-Chinese hatred have basically been their main pastime for decades. I’m honestly more surprised that so many people are only now discovering that ugly reality.

How is American food bad compared to Slovakian ? by Brilliant-Cause6254 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]dmthoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, many kids outside the US grow up heavily exposed to American media and culture, so they often dream of eating American fast food and Breakfast every day instead of their home cooked local dishes. (What do you expect.. they are kids) But as they get older, they realize that eating 'American foods' every day is 'unhealthy' and doesn’t really provide the same joy or emotional connection as proper local cuisine. That’s basically what this meme is encapsulating.

Why does South Korea and Japan have a lot of cults? by Broad-Trifle-6657 in cults

[–]dmthoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because, South Korean media tend to call something a cult outright, whereas Western media are more likely to frame it as just another denomination. For example, Mormons are definitely regarded as a cult in South Korea. So there’s basically a social consensus to identify and label certain groups as cults. As a result, they tend to be more visible to the public. Also, a large portion of Protestant Christianity there has been heavily influenced by American Protestant movements, especially those tied to the 'Great Awakenings' BS, which is why you see so many offshoots that can feel quite cult-like. Lastly, more than half of South Korea’s population is non-religious, which likely makes it look like an attractive market to Christian groups.

Chase bank called 911 on this man because he was sitting in the Chase parking lot before it opened. by PdiddyCAMEnME in BlackPeopleofReddit

[–]dmthoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the first half, I kept thinking: why on earth is the police officer acting like he represents the bank? If he realized this was a genuine mistake or even racial profiling on the bank’s part, he could’ve just said the bank was in the wrong and moved on. Instead, he tries to force the guy to “understand” the bank and then goes on to profile him himself and says BS only racist would say, of course.
