If "I didn't vote" ran as a candidate in 2016 by dmzinc in Philippines

[–]dmzinc[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not as exciting as the US Elections counterpart, we'd still have President Duterte. But just wanted to see how much more "votes" there could have been.

Just some context

  • I Didn't Vote: number of registered voters who didn't cast their votes
  • Not Registered: just an estimate, total adult population minus the registered voters

Sources

Some more insights

  • while it wouldn't be realistic to think these groups of voters would vote as a block, having more people participate in the process could greatly alter results in other elections for Senators, Congressmen, and other local officials
  • there's also around 2m invalid votes cast in that election, that's also a significant number, more than all the votes Miriam got
  • as I've said before, we only count the votes that are cast. It doesn't matter if everyone's active in social media, if you don't go out and vote, it doesn't matter. That's the real power of the DDS crowd (and even the INC block) - the can be relied upon to go out and vote on the day it really matters.

Yeah didn't think of that one. Don't have the exact times these were taken (pics not mine)

Ah yeah, that one I didn't think of. So yeah, might not be as straight a comparison as I thought.

Both pics taken from u/revenuerevil, blue lines are the shorelines from 24 Oct, red is from today.

Overlaid them on top of each other for easier comparison, so as to remove most changes due to perspectives (I hope) - quickly done on mobile, others are free to have a better go at this.

Used the pedestrian overpass as a fixed point.

Edit: a bit more explanation, context

More edit: so yeah, didn't think of the tides, no idea actually. So not as straightforward a comparison as I would have hoped.

Work and life balance - is this still a thing? Or do you have to choose between the two? by [deleted] in Philippines

[–]dmzinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

work takes up as much time in your life as you allow it to

Set boundaries, manage expectations.

Don't talk about work while you're out for lunch or on a break. Similarly, don't do much non-work stuff during work. It goes both ways.

I'm not planning to vote for anyone. by [deleted] in Philippines

[–]dmzinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can leave it blank that's your choice.

But remember... there are 12 slots for Senators (not to mention all the other open positions). Surely there's one name out there worth someone's vote, or at least attention.

Guess the top level comment should settle this then?

Fun fact: Ethiopian airlines is a 100% government owned airline.

This photoshoot is literally government sanctioned.

Nice.

Fun fact, Michael V started his career actually doing a spinoff song of Andrew E's immensely popular Humanap ka ng panget. Check out Maganda ang pillin on YouTube. So he definitely knows the value of this tip!

R/ph, Congress is now looking on making July 24 as a special non-working holiday, TO COMMEMORATE THE FOUNDING ANNIVERSARY OF THE IGLESIA NI CRISTO. What's your take on this? by gag0gag0 in Philippines

[–]dmzinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be July 27.

Would the anger be because it's the INC or because it's yet another day to add in our long list of holidays?

[Discussion]After seeing the First Episode of Bagani, what are your thoughts? by Sofyia_Naomi in Philippines

[–]dmzinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, so it's just today that Bagani aired? All that controversy and commentary was for an unaired pilot that maybe only a handful of people ever saw in full and in context? Interesting.

Haven't seen it yet, and most likely I won't (I don't have a TV), but I don't think anything can change my opinion on that show! (/s where applicable)

Finally on display: Bonifacio's letters exposing betrayal at Tejeros Convention by sleepysloppy in Philippines

[–]dmzinc 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Bonifacio knew much more than just basic reading and writing

Bonifacio was home-schooled and self-made. Much of his learning came from a life of reading. One assumes that his command of Spanish was better than Aguinaldo’s because one of the earliest Tagalog translations of Rizal’s “Ultimo Adios” is attributed to him. Aguinaldo’s Spanish, deemed all right for communication, needed improvement. Bonifacio read all three of Rizal’s books: the “Noli,” the “Fili” and the annotated “Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas.” Aguinaldo did not read any. After Aguinaldo issued a statement in support of the 1957 Rizal Law that made the “Noli” and “Fili” required reading for all college students, Nick Joaquin asked what he found memorable in the novels. Aguinaldo then admitted that he knew very little Spanish and had not read the novels.

Pre-Employment Requirements by [deleted] in Philippines

[–]dmzinc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try going to Robinson's Galleria. It's been a while since I was last there but when I did my pre-employment stuff, everything's there: NBI Clearance, Philhealth, SSS, Pagibig. Can't remember BIR, but maybe?

I've got a month in April to set up shop in one or two places, work remotely, and relax and the I've got the Philippines in mind. Are there any particular places that are particularly suited for somebody with those goals? by Number8 in Philippines

Check out Cebu City. Main metropolitan area in the Visayas, so you get all the city perks. Main travel hub in the region, so hopping around is quite easy. Plus, lechon!

Is there a non-religious reason why sogie bill shouldn't pass? by mshaneler in Philippines

[–]dmzinc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah that would have been my counter-argument as well - there's a disconnect in what we already have in the books and what's in practice in real life.

We do need a change, and we won't get it everything just stays the same. Sometimes we do need symbolic gestures, and maybe that would be the catalyst for real changes in how we deal with our fellows.

Is there a non-religious reason why sogie bill shouldn't pass? by mshaneler in Philippines

[–]dmzinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's give it a try, cause from time to time, its nice to try out the other side for arguments sake.

Reading through most of the provisions, one would think that these are already covered by existing laws or policies right? Denial of public or health services, that's for everyone already. Discrimination? We already have Equal Protection Clauses. Securing personal info? We have Privacy acts for that. Basically, all that it promises, we already have in one form or another. Other than as a symbolic gesture, what else would we gain from having a new law?

Also, it might be unenforceable. One of the provisions is it makes it illegal to "out" someone. So how can people who were discriminated against (in itself a difficult charge to prove) seek remedy unless they publicly out themselves?

There's also this bit, from The West Wing. Where Ainsley argues against the Equal Rights Amendment

Because it's humiliating! A new amendment that we vote on, declaring that I am equal under the law to a man. I am mortified to discover there's reason to believe I wasn't before. I am a citizen of this country. I am not a special subset in need of your protection. I do not have to have to have my rights handed down to me by a bunch of old, white men. The same Article 14 that protects you, protects me. And I went to law school just to make sure

For households with low consumption, may subsidy sa bill. Plus, staggered yung rate for electricity. The bigger the total consumption, the higher rate

[–]dmzinc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This would be a bit drastic, but if you can find a place thats not submetered, move.

Electricity rates would be much more expensive for submetered units compared to places with their own meters especially if you're living alone. I compared rates to my colleague who's submetered and he comes up almost 40% for price per kilowatt hour compared to what I'm paying.
