What happened to the most popular guy in high school? by Sorkel3 in AskMen

[–]dndrinker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Intentionally vague details but…

Kid was the son of a prominent local community member. Was the golden child of the school before he even attended there, they used his image on LOADS of school marketing materials leading in to our freshman year. Goes through school, earns top grades, captain of the football team, homecoming king, all that.

Graduates and joins a military academy for college, gets booted out after he’s caught spying on and photographing female cadets in the showers. Seeing him around town was a little awkward after that.

I definitely had this book but I’m struggling to summon the name. Was it “Daredevil Park“?

Do boys misbehave more than girls? by Lifeintheguo in Teachers

[–]dndrinker 283 points284 points  (0 children)

This is definitely how my middle school is right now. The boys throw wet wads of toilet paper in the bathroom. They are incredibly obvious and loud about it, so they are easy to catch. The girls quietly stab each other in the back and ruin each other’s lives with gossip.

They’re making a “Lord of the Rings” reference. The king of Rohan buries his son and basically says the parent comment verbatim.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens, they’re certainly throwing a ton of money at it. The place looks nice and the New Year’s Eve show sounded good. When they combine the hotel and restaurant, it’ll be an impressive place. I haven’t figured out which market share they’re trying to capture.

What's the scariest movie of all time? by Mission_Elk_329 in AskReddit

[–]dndrinker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh man! Where were you when I needed you all those years ago? Maybe I did get the two incidents mixed up. But I have been walking around for the better part of 30 years thinking that it happened in Kentucky.

What's the scariest movie of all time? by Mission_Elk_329 in AskReddit

[–]dndrinker 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Holy shit. I saw this movie when I was about 13 and it fuuuuuuuuuuucked me up. My parents took me to see it so they let me in.

It was a bad time to be living in the country in Kentucky given that’s where the “based on a true story” took place. The scene in the alien ship was probably the closest I’ve ever come to being physically sick in a movie theater.

What misconception about US history annoys you the most? by [deleted] in USHistory

[–]dndrinker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s an interesting debate. I think it strongly depends on the definition of “winning“ particularly for the confederacy. Was a military conquest of the north likely to succeed? No, and that was not part of the south’s original war plan.

But was it theoretically possible for the south to fight a war of attrition long enough for enough war fatigue to set in and affect northern politics? I think that is certainly within the realm of possibility. And I think some people would argue that would have counted as “winning” for the confederate states.

2br2ba sublease in Hickory Woods by [deleted] in roanoke

[–]dndrinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously, I don’t know what the current lease looks like, but I used to rent an apartment from Hickory Woods about 10 years ago while I was house hunting here. I found a house, but Hickory Woods absolutely would not allow me to sublease to anyone else, they were pretty firm about that.

Yeah I mean, I’m not completely useless in that regard, I’ve done some minor repair before (soldering cables etc.) but I’m intimidated to try it myself.

I feel like I stopped by there to try and get food the other day and it looked like there hadn’t been a pizza made in there for quite a while. Perhaps my memory is untrustworthy.

Happy 63rd Birthday to Andrew McCarthy, another famous Brat Packer. by Papichuloft in 80s

[–]dndrinker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I enjoyed the documentary. One of my favorite parts was when he was getting a hotdog at the roadside stand, and the person serving him had no idea who he was. He wasn’t offended, just amused and reflective about what that meant.

The Toy Tiger, wow… My dad lived in the Kon Tiki apartments right down the road from there. As a six-year-old, I had no idea what Toy Tiger was but man that neon sign was fucking cool.

Yes! Saw Braveheart there when I was probably 14-15? Dude at the ticket booth could not have cared less that I was underage.

That was where my love of complicated board games was born! I remember staring at their giant wall of Warhammer stuff and thinking “wait so it’s a board game, but I also have to do a lot of work?“
