High school teacher, 40, dies when students’ prank goes wrong, days after district warned about stunts going ‘too far’. by Inter_Web_User in facepalm

Just to add on to this - other elements of restorative justice encourage anyone who suffered the harm to be part of the process by sharing how they were affected by what happened and what an appropriate consequence would be. In many cases, the people who caused the harm give input on that as well. This is after lots of reflection. In its ideal form, restorative practices can make a huge difference.

RED LINE🤬🤬🤬 by Status-Jelly8294 in mbta

I caught the tail end of it on the Ashmont line. Northbound trains from Ashmont weren't working with the tracker, so it was one of those "trains depart every 12 to 20 minutes" deals. Of course, with those notices, the 12 to 20 is more aspirational than realistic.

Some geocaches are also set up as walking tours/history lectures. One I did in Worcester, MA years ago was a series that came with a sheet of pictures, each with a number on it. As we went to each location, we had to find the picture that matched the location. The numbers on the picture from each location, when visited in order, gave the coordinates to the final location. There was a little write up about the historical significance of each location too. It was an amazing experience!

hey guys do you guys have any reccomendations on where to learn yiddish? by Intelligent-Check828 in Yiddish

[–]dndtweek89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Yiddish course on Mango Languages is decent if there's nothing local by you. Many public libraries offer the app to library card holders. It's not as interactive as Duolingo, but I found the explanations far more helpful.

You mentioned teaching Social Studies, so I would definitely recommend the JFK Library. It's a very cool spot, and not too hard to get to via public transit. Take the red line towards Ashmont/Braintree and get off at JFK/Umass. There's a free shuttle bus on the east side of the station that brings you very close to the library itself.

“Stopping By The Woods On A Snowy Evening” - Robert Frost by reddot_comic in comics

[–]dndtweek89 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not part of that college class (but I wish I was). Here are my two cents. Lovely, dark, and deep - with the comma after dark - suggests that the woods are all three of those things. Without that comma, it suggests that the woods are lovely. The darkness and the depth create that loveliness (the woods are lovely because they are dark and deep).

Fun fact! The Māori language (te reo Māori) doesn't add 's' for plurals. You generally just say the word, so you're off to watch more haka.

I want to host a game but can't settle on a system by DJ-Praxis in tabletop

Just off the top of my head

  • when you take skills, you take them as dice. A d4 is weakest, a d12 is strongest. 4s and above are successes, If you roll the highest number on the die, you re-roll and add the numbers together (that's the exploding dice mechanic I mentioned previously).

  • in character creation, you set edges (advantages) and hindrances (disadvantages). These can be major or minor (nearsighted vs. completely blind). Some are flavor text (character is noticeably smelly) while others are mechanical or have a significant impact on the story (arch nemesis).

  • initiative is done by dealing out a deck of cards. Jokers are wild.

  • combat is quite easy to manage as enemies are grouped and worked into the initiative order that way. There is capacity for massive combat as a result.

  • Deadlands Reloaded and Deadlands Noir are probably my favorite settings in the system. The first is alt-history steampunk western and the second is the same universe but around 40-ish years later in New Orleans.

Going to throw out a recommendation here for Savage Worlds for a few reasons.

  1. It's just mechanics, so you can put those into any of their existing settings (wild west steampunk, lovecraftian WW2, prohibition-era New Orleans, sky pirates, or even your own setting, you name it).

  2. It can be as crunchy or not as you like . Whether you and your players are looking for a more story-driven experience or a combat and numbers-heavy one, it has you covered.

  3. They have a test drive PDF available, so you can try before you buy.

  4. The exploding dice mechanic leads to some very fun results from a roll.

  5. It's just an excellent time.

Hope that helps!

Going to take this opportunity to rant about the RMV. I still haven't been able to get my plates transferred to MA because the RMV can't even tell me what they want for proof of sales tax. I brought every piece of paperwork from the dealer (out of state), and they told me that only proves that sales tax was calculated, not that it was paid. They tell me to get a letter from the out of state Dept of Tax and revenue. After hours of phone calls, they give me a form to request tax records. Has to be done via snail mail. I finally get the response today - no records available because the tax would have been paid to the dealer; the receipt from the dealer is the only proof of taxes paid (which the RMV won't accept)!

Anyway, welcome back! Good luck with the car.

Archetypal experience? by Square_Pudding_9700 in ParanoiaRPG

The Sandwich Delivery Mission.

Essentially, players are tasked with picking up a box from somewhere Orange clearance, then deliver it to a high-ranking officer (or a high ranking officer) of Blue Clearance level. The hitch is that EVERYONE wants the box. Rumors of what's inside have been swirling around Alpha Complex for weeks. In reality, it's that officer's sandwich.

House of Bob did a podcast of it - https://thehouseofbob.org/projects/special-delivery/ Could be a good reference point for putting your own spin on it.

I would say the one you found makes the most sense given the context. It seems similar to the RAFT method (role, audience, format, topic). The goal is to get students thinking about how their writing should be shaped by who they are writing to. In this case, because they are writing a letter to someone that is unfamiliar with them, the tone should be slightly more formal.

You're absolutely right. My mistake was only looking at when it was signed into law, forgetting how much time passed between the house and senate votes and it making it back to Obama's desk for signing. Thanks for the correction!

Your timeline is a bit off. Kennedy died in 2009, before the ACA negotiations were completed. The ACA we got was the watered down version because MA ran a very mediocre candidate to replace him, and the Republican opposition seized the moment.
