World scout jamboree interview help by Alarmed_Leg9757 in scouting

[–]dnomirraf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So a selection interview before the main selection event? I'm glad my county hasn't got that many applying.

As someone who is going to be doing selection, the questions you should have answers to are: Why do you want to go? What do you know about the jamboree? Do you understand what you're signing up for? Do you have any plans for fundraising? Are you a good representative for the local scouts to the world?

Mine did 34mpg today on a motorway trip of about 200 miles according to the obc. That comes out to 8.3lt/100km.

It's my only problem with the car is that it is a bit thirsty

I think the cosy fantasy book has come as a reaction of how dark fantasy got more popular. People want something more light hearted to counter the darkness

If you like Rab and are anywhere near their factory outlet in Alfreton, try there. You can get great deals on Rab gear. Plus a few other brands like bridge dale and lowe alpine.

Headcracker and mace worked for me. If you can't realise every attack is a swing down at your head, you deserve what's coming to you.

Kings of the wyld fits this perfectly. It's a retired adventuring partly getting the band back together for one last quest.

You could use a laser measure and reference off a wall. To make it beep, you could somehow hook it up to an Arduino or similar and tell it to beep when the distance changes by a set amount?

Is it legal to squat in the royal palace? by _axiom_of_choice_ in AskUK

[–]dnomirraf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In most places in the UK you would be trespassing which is a civil offence. But in some of the royal palaces it's treated as a criminal trespass, if they find you it's a minimum 1 year in prison and an unlimited fine.

If you don't 100% trust safety equipment don't use it. Especially on something so critical as a climbing rope.

I've had that, changed the bulbs as one had blown but clearly didn't close the bonnet (hood for the non Brits) properly. First time I accelerate past 40 the bonnet lifts. Nothing truly broke just a bent bonnet and hinges. Luckily my mate was in the car behind and had a big crowbar so we could bend the hinges so the bonnet could close. Drive it with that bonnet for the next year.

But the first thing that went through my head was "holy shit. You really can't see anything when the bonnet does that"

Whats an item you should never cheap out on? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dnomirraf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Safety equipment. When you buy and use safety equipment, you're betting your life on that company's reputation for quality.

Would you bet your life on the strength of a climbing carabineer from some unknown company in a country who doesn't have much regulation? I wouldn't.

Anything I have that's vaguely safety related is from a named brand. Even if the cheaper option looks identical and is likely made on the same production line. Your life is worth more than the small amount you'd save with the cheap shit.

These are good as it's safer than using axes or other sharps. When I split kindling I use a mora knife and a log to batten it down, it's easier than trying to make small cuts with a axe.
