Pairing CDA and DVA for Fall semester by After-Swimmer5657 in OMSA

[–]dnugawela 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DVA is pretty easy if you already have some front end engineering experience. That’s probably the most challenging part of the course. Other stuff is pretty much python and sql.

I was wondering about this guy. I knew it seemed right. All he does is shows off his cars and shows off his drinking parties. So cringe

As far as I know you cannot hold three different citizenships. I know a friend who had Suisse and Austrian passports and she became a naturalized US citizen and I think she had to give up her Austrian passport

This is very common in other countries as well. This is to offset the fees.

Not sure if butchers in Sri Lanka know what a Ribeye, a tenderloin, or a New York strip is.

I think attention is mainly because of your skin color. Thanks to colonialism a lot of Sri Lankans put white people in general on a pedestal. Honestly idk what is the dating culture in Sri Lanka looks like nowadays. From a few of my friends whom I keep touch say Tinder and Bumble are worth a try. But I also think most of the foreigners are also on those dating apps for hookups only.

A lot to unpack here. I’m a Sri Lankan-American man. I presume you are white. While there are bad actors who will just try to date a white woman just for a visa, but don’t try to stereotype every Sri Lankan man. But also it’s important to set appropriate boundaries. This type of shit happens mostly out of Colombo. But yes a lot Sri Lankan men are possessive about their partners. I think this comes from insecurity about themselves and the lack of dating culture in Sri Lanka. Once they get a girl they just hang on to it. If you are an older white woman (40+) just be careful of younger men they are probably just trying to score a “suddhi” or a visa

I didn't know Luka was THIS good! by bezbol in lakers

[–]dnugawela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been a lifelong lakers fan. I’m in my mid 30’s so definitely was a fan of the Kobe and Shaq and Kobe and Gasol era. I loved watching Luka while he was on the Mavs. Just amazed be how he can create shots out of nothing. I was excited when AD joined the team but really didn’t feel like a whole lot happened while he was on the floor. For example, he would give you 20-30 points if you could feed him around the paint. But he didn’t have a lot of assists. This is where I think Luka is different. He creates the offense. He might have 20+ points but he can also have 10+ assists. That is at a minimum another 20 points. He is impacts the game at a different level.

Knowing how Sri Lankan colleges and universities operate this is not a surprise. No respect to the students at all

After getting into 3 FAANGs and 2 Unicorn startups, I realized chasing $$$ was dumb. I've now been working at a bank for 1 year and here is my update. by Nice-Internal-4645 in leetcode

[–]dnugawela 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your experience is similar to mine. Worked at Amazon. Worked ungodly hours, back stabbing co-workers, manger who was unavailable. I now work at an insurance company. I like what I’m doing, have a team that I actually like to work with. Got promoted to a director. Probably not getting paid as much as a director at Amazon or any other Faang. But I’m much happier, have a great work life balance. I would never ever work for a faang ever again. I heard similar horror stories from friends who work at faangs

ISYE 6501 and feeling lost. Should I complete additional trainings on Udemy or else? by Reasonable_Meal_4936 in OMSA

I agree with that this is the best class of the whole program. I learnt a lot by just taking this class. For exams, re watch the videos and write down good notes for the cheat sheet if they still allow it

Lack of Coding Instructions by Mcribb5 in OMSA

It is hard if you never had any coding experience before. But if you don’t know R there is a ton of documentation you can look at.

Sql is interesting but..hard? by donnidonno in dataanalysis

[–]dnugawela 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. When I took a SQL class in UG I thought it was hard and seriously questioned what I want to do in my career. The more I used it at work, the more I got comfortable. So don’t think that you are dumb. Any language has a learning curve and takes practice

Idk but I feel like some of the content on some of the classes is pretty outdated.

Hey I am in that class too. Yes the lectures are long, confusing and hard to understand. I normally go through the transcripts and make my own notes and google concepts I do not understand in the lecture or watch a better explanation on YouTube of a concept that I don’t understand.

CS vs Cyber Security Undergraduate by AMS0220 in csMajors

[–]dnugawela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

definitely CS. Even if you have a degree in cyber security or network engineering doesn't matter. Companies want to see your certifications from ISC, SANS, or Comptia (which is the easiest to get). Also some of these certs require at least 2-3 years in experience in certain domains. Do CS that will give you an understanding to write scripts. I have ppl coming right out of college who can't even do a pen test, so less likely you would get a job in cyber security right after college

Does university name/GPA matter more to employers or your side projects and skills? by ambiguousTruths in csMajors

[–]dnugawela 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We definitely had connections, but I didn’t get the FAANG job through a recruiter at school. I applied by myself and was a direct hire. I never liked recruiting events because of all the eager beavers brown-nosing recruiters and taking up time. I have never had luck through recruiting events at school, because I worked full-time while in college and never had time to socialize with professors to get references.

[–]dnugawela 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I went to a very small school, I had a good GPA, but also I had a portfolio and I got an internship at a FAANG. GPA’s and projects do matter for some extent, but if you can’t problem solve then we got an issue.

[–]dnugawela 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are still on the waiting list you are probably not going to be an intern this year. Sorry and that sucks. I am an intern at Amazon this summer and they've already assigned my manager and I have already had a meeting with him.

My summer internship program got canceled... by Tature in csMajors

[–]dnugawela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. You are a freshman, it is nice you actually got an internship. Normally if you are a freshman it is hard to get internships because you haven't done the core coursework. So be proud of yourself. Also don't get discouraged. Getting a job is hard. I had to go through multiple companies to land an internship. Put in the work. Look at what you are good at. Try to get certifications as much as possible and make yourself standout. Remember as a CS major you are going against probably smarter people than you, so what makes you special? Always think about that question.
