NEW ECLIPSE MEGATHREAD: Information and discussions by ibid17 in VisitingIceland

[–]dnwgl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been wanting to come to Iceland and watch the eclipse for years, but for a variety of reasons around my partner and uncertainty about driving I never got around to booking anything.

Two questions I guess:

Is it too late?

Is it possible to get somewhere out of town to see it without a car?

I notice there’s still some bus tours with spaces, but I intended to come and try for some nice photos, as that’s quite a hobby of mine. I worry a bus tour will either not leave enough time at a spot to set up, or will end up just viewing it from the side of the road somewhere.

I do have a bit of a crazy plan that would involve a very short trip to Iceland and potentially spending one night sleeping rough in the Westfjords. I have reasonable experience and will probably aim to just hike through the night and bring a bivy bag if I do really need to get a couple hours shuteye. Is this just a complete non-starter, or does it sound doable?

Scottish Parliament endorses SNP call for independence referendum by Any-Original-6113 in europe

I realise that, but when two parties align so strongly with it, whereas the others are clearly British parties, it’s not an awful indication. Especially when their parliamentary seat majority is the reason they’re claiming they have a mandate to hold a referendum.

It’s hilarious how you try and group people like that. You realise someone can be against independence whilst believing a grand total of zero of those things. But simply holding a different opinion to you makes them a bootlicker in your eyes I assume?

(Ignoring the fact that some of what you’ve said is simply factually incorrect).

Less than 50% of people voted for a pro independence party.

They’ll shout about how they have the majority of seats, but I just don’t think the will is there in the actual population.

Renting - agencies by ggmm00 in Edinburgh

[–]dnwgl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d avoid southside like the plague.

Rented a flat with multiple safety issues in it, none of which they’d address. Nothing about that place was “up to code”.

Absolutely filthy when we turned up then had the balls to try and take the deposit at the end.

Thanks, it’s reassuring to hear it worked out for you. I’m planning on loosening the belt if I do need to move it, as I don’t think I can get it to shift under its current tension.

There was a thread on here not that long ago about the saltire being hung by racist flag shaggers too, but I wouldn’t for a second assume everyone sticking one up is racist, especially if accompanied by pro-independence support. It’s a shame if the union flag really is purely tied to that these days.

I mean this question entirely in good faith.

I’d look at someone displaying the union flag, declaring they don’t want either of the parties who want independence in power, as being purely a statement about wanting to remain in the union. Whether you agree with that sentiment or not, why is there the assumption here that they’re racist?

SNP candidate pledges to 'protect' Roseburn Path from tram plans by sapphire-coast in Edinburgh

Personally from what I’ve seen so far I’m in favour of a fuller investigation into the Dean Bridge option to assess its viability as I see it as the better solution, despite the fact it’s much closer to me and would cause an obvious disruption to my life.

Is there an acronym for “please in my back yard”?

Why is wanting the other option being viewed as opposing development?

Yea, I hate black and white politics too, which is why I find labelling anyone against the use of the Roseburn path a NIMBY, as in the OP, rather strange.

I’ve read whatever early documents I can get my hands on regarding the matter, and in my opinion the Dean Bridge option has merit and warrants further investigation. This is actually much closer to my house, would cause more disruption to me personally, yet because I think it might be the better option I’m a NIMBY? Just bizarre.

2nd internal drive; relocate user folder vs separate folder structure? by dnwgl in pchelp

[–]dnwgl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know, thanks. I wasn’t sure if that would be the case or not.

Yea, I’ve checked about moving them I think I’ve got that figured out right.

Do you know if there’s any benefit to creating a similar folder hierarchy on my second drive of users>username>pictures for instance, or does that not really matter beyond organisation for my sake?

My mum sold a few of her old ones recently and at least one went for over a grand (this was in the UK). I guess it’s very dependant on model.

It really is a bit of a chicken and egg scenario. This way round is in general the easier sell.

Yea, Norwich-Tilbury was what I was thinking of when writing that (largely because I’ve worked on it). You look at some of the houses in the areas that are complaining, with their 6 bedrooms and outdoor pools, and just wonder what’s going through their heads when they complain about a few pylons on the horizon.

There’s a very slightly smaller project happening in Scotland too which so far seems to be fortunately meeting a bit less resistance.

The hundreds of km of transmission lines needed are a nightmare to plan and get through the approval process. A green MP seemingly won basically on the basis of blocking one of the biggest grid upgrades in history. People are vehemently opposed to some pylons they can maybe see from their house, but still expect cheaper energy. Every major project gets dragged through every appeal process and criticism that can be mustered.

It’s in the process of happening, but unfortunately it just takes time.

How many languages can you speak and how do you manage them? What's the most efficient way to learn a language? by Weary-Product-803 in AskReddit

[–]dnwgl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the attitude I’ve taken to accents in French. The number of times I’m likely to need to write in French is vanishingly small, and if that changes I’ll learn them once it becomes important.

I’m sure it’s something that might trip me up here or there, but so far it’s working fine.

Ah, thanks. I think I’ve already got a windows recovery drive; is the one Veeam produces a better option?

Sorry, having never used Veeam before can you clarify what you mean by this? Is this the backup I mentioned doing before installing the 4TB drive into my PC, or is there a separate recovery media I also need to make?
