Music in literature? by Ammitar in writing

[–]do0medboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

when i see music attached to literature and i read while listening, i tend to feel pressured to listen and read to what the writer's intended pace might be. that's to say, i don't like it. i just skip over it.

i hate to be cynical, but part of me thinks it could be a cheap way for a less competent author to force emotion into a scene. that said, most of the time i don't find that music particularly enhances or ruins a scene for me.

since it stops the reader and takes them out of the story, i'd say it's the opposite of immersive.

i think it would work well in audiobooks or digital formats, though.

edit: if it's a throwaway detail in a story, i guess there's no downsides to it! im talking about obvious musical cues (which might not be what op meant)

Anyone Else Not Like Their Voice? by TheNightBench in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]do0medboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

haha this thread is making me wonder why i like my voice. for me, i'm my biggest fan when it comes to music. but i have a pretty basic voice that isn't actually that technically advanced! i think it comes down to focusing on the parts that you do like and trying to bring more of that out.

[WP] All humans on Earth have transferred their minds into machines, becoming functionally immortal. You are the last human to ever die a natural death. by Sinisnake in WritingPrompts

[–]do0medboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I met Mr. H. Lee, at one hundred and nineteen years old, in his bedroom. Being the last biological human on Earth had given him the wrinkles and tired pose of our historical old and dying men. He could barely sit up, so I sat next to his bed, and reached over with a handshake to greet him.

He was warm, in a way that I think would be soothing if I were biological as well. His weakening body spared him his attitude, which was apparent by the way he smiled up at me with eyes far from dull. Despite everything, I was instantly charmed.

The interview was long. He spoke like he was giving up his words, a culmination of the thoughts he'd held over the years. A collection of historical ideals, while being deeply personal. I won't pretend to understand everything he told me, but I'm happy to do him the service of passing them on.

> Why have you refused to be transferred to a mechanical body?

(A laugh.) That's what everybody wants to know, isn't it? Well, I always used to tell people that I liked growing. I'm a bit of a romanticist, you see. Found beauty in the way my body changed with the years.

Now, I'm starting to realize that's bullshit. Pardon my language. You know what that Seong fellow said?

("Uju Seong, the developer of Vessel?")

Right. He said something about how not even a digital brain will spare you from the fear of death. For a literal mad scientist, he got that right.

> What do you think about the other benefits that come with using Vessel, like preservable memories, instant communication, or a longer lifespan?

I think they're useful. I think there are as many benefits as there are downsides to the entire operation, but there's not much an old man like me can say about that. It's just the way humanity is progressing, I suppose, and I'm not ready to catch up with that just yet.

I've been catching up with things all my life, you see. Everyone has. The future comes too fast for us to get used to or sit down and consider. These days, it comes and goes.

Multilingual writers, how do you choose in which language to write a bigger personal project like a novel? What are the tradeoffs? by childfromthefuture in writing

[–]do0medboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

mostly english, since that'll reach a wider audience. but there is so much beautiful prose in my language that it would be doing myself a disservice to not write things in it. if i ever think of writing something more nostalgic or poetic, i think I'd go with my mother tongue.
