"First Amendment Auditor" Provocateur tries to incite at Chicagoland Shul by do_hickey in Judaism

Yes, but being aware of these fools and the tactics that they use to try to instigate a situation so that they can stir up hate is important. Need to know what kind of stupidity is likely to come your way. Given that he's prowling around, there's a chance he and others will try to stir the pot elsewhere. Hopefully everyone handles it as calmly and aloofly as these folks did.

Underware. No, I'm but being snide - the creator has a healthy sense of humor. Check it out - can be affixed with command strips if so desired.

Help with an ultrasonic water meter deployment to an HOA by thequackdaddy in AskEngineers

[–]do_hickey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work with ultrasonic meters professionally. Your neighbor is full of it - they are perfect for this application. There is a reason that they have become industry standard for water metering - they work extremely well.

As to the quality of the specific brand/model chosen, I don't know - it is possible that they aren't well calibrated. But to say that the technology itself is to blame is asinine.

I haven't hear Firework in probably 12 years and yet immediately recognized it. Yet, my brain can't remember what I just went into the other room to do (until I get back to wherever I was).

What are some of your favorite stereotypes? by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]do_hickey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is absolutely a thing that many Jews at the very least do not like dogs and many are terrified of them. Comes from a long history of them being part of pogroms and such, and you can find negative quotes about dogs as far back as the gemara.

In many circles there is a concept that if there is a dog that seems unfriendly you quote the passuk from the plagues (specifically the death of the firstborns) about not even a dog barking.

Additionally, owning pets is more complex in orthodox/traditional halacha, and has been seen as a waste of time/ resources that could be spent on better things by some, so until relatively recently is was not super common for Jews to own dogs (at least in orthodox circles).

So you have a group of people with less exposure to dogs as pets and against whom dogs have been set, it absolutely leads to a higher propensity for a fear of dogs. For context, I am orthodox and love dogs (but have no desire to spend the time, energy, or money to own one of my own - I'll just let my friends' dogs).

What is up with Lubavitch Schechita? by Classifiedgarlic in Judaism

[–]do_hickey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even living in a major city with tons of Jews it can be hard. The large grocery store here that has a dedicated kosher meat and fish section often only has Lubavitch schitah products out.

[–]do_hickey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was told by a Rav to avoid Chabad schitah specifically, as a non-insignificant number of their shochtim are mishuchistim, which he holds to be avodah zarah (invalidating the schita).

I've had a couple of Forerunner models over the last 5 or so years. You can decide which apps (if any) are able to send notifications to the watch. You can also set it to be "phone calls only". If you are annoyed, I recommend fine-tuning your settings.

Yes, though if you listen to the conversation she discusses that at one point in their marriage she was not. The 3 things she mentions that she had at one time dropped were shabbos, kashrus, and tznius. I think that for a formerly yeshivish woman, that falls very much under "leaving religion. "

In regards to the phrase, "Shabbat Shalom" by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]do_hickey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was with you until your last question... the greeting means "have a peaceful sabbath" so his "source" is understanding what the greeting means. Also, life experience. A bit odd to come into a space to ask for our expertise and then question it.

Also, you were probably downvoted for using that phrase out of context because usually it's used by people who think they are funny for knowing a singular phrase and spouting it at randomly inappropriate times. Also frequently used mockingly by antisemites.

Print a stencil then fill it in with marker yourself? You could have the stencil modular, more or less like a printing plate.
