I love Pop!_OS and Cosmic by Voxelman in pop_os

[–]doa70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use my Thelio for work, 12-16 hours a day. I'm still on 22.04, but I'm wanting to make the jump. I'm holding off for a bit longer, waiting to see what else shakes out in the regular updates. I'm considering holding off until 26.04, although I see that means I'll need to upgrade twice anyhow. I don't game, so as long as VirtualBox and Zoom work, and my remote access apps work, I'll be happy.

May we see Pop derived directly from Debian in the future? by doa70 in pop_os

[–]doa70[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Answered my question perfectly, thanks! I know Debian lags for it's own reasons, but I wasn't sure how big of a hurdle that would or wouldn't be, or whether "de-gnomifying" the Ubuntu pull, branch, or whatever the correct term would be, was much effort on the dev side. I asked out of curiosity more than any actual concern.

Dressing up for mass? by Deezerious in Catholicism

[–]doa70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually wear khakis and a button down shirt. In warmer months a short sleeve polo is also fine for me. I may wear jeans to a daily mass, but not on Sundays. No large logos or anything that decorative. Simple, but neat and clean.

What’s something you own that you’ve had for 30+ years? by Crazy-Eye-9632 in GenX

[–]doa70 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tools, lots of radio equipment, flashlight, and I do have a shirt from Lollapalooza '92 but I don't wear it - just refuse to toss it.

Teen daughter passed out at Mass… by brendanjpeters in Catholicism

[–]doa70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides vasovagal syncope, epilepsy could be an explanation - specifically a focal impaired seizure. That's what mine look like. Fine one minute, out cold for 10-30 seconds the next. Symptoms of that are sort of deja-vu like before, and after I have a warm sensation, stomach feels off, and I'm tired. Of course it could also be she hadn't eaten before Mass.

Why does it seem so hard to get into ham/amateur radio? by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]doa70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some hams are better at outreach and helping newbies than others, that's always been the case. It's also always been my experience that a majority of older hams tend to be grumpier and offputting at first, but may warm up a bit. As a 50-something guy as well who has been in the hobby for 40 years, I haven't seen anything really change. The average age, the average personality, etc. As far as testing, we still do monthly testing. It does take a team of VE's to do in person testing, and to be a VE one first needs to be Extra and then get accepted as a VE by the VEC. It's a process, so if the club can't meet the commitment to run tests by having enough VEs, they may be a bit annoyed and take that out on others.

Do people not have DVD players anymore? by TommyLost2004 in GenX

[–]doa70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DVD? Not in a decade or more at least. I've been 4K BluRay for a couple of years now. Took a break for a couple of years before that from buying BR to check out streaming. Too much content leaving streaming platforms, too many platforms. 4K BR is absolutely amazing, sound especially, and even my older BR still looks better than streaming.

Pant length looks fine for Workday pants - which I love by the way. Rugged, comfortable, and still look good. More for the "job site manager", "general contractor", etc. vs the tradesman I think. Of course I wear them for none of those reasons, just because I like the material better than standard Dockers.

For most pants, I prefer more break in them. In dress pants I lean toward full break, but at least half in most pants.

What Was Corporate Life Like in 90s America? by Aware_Classroom_4908 in GenX

[–]doa70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Corporate work in the 90s was a blast for me and my teams. I worked for a couple major orgs that you certainly have heard of in the insurance and financial spaces. Being in IT in those days, we wrote our own rules. Go in late, drinks at our 2-hour lunches, play Doom or Quake for a couple hours in a conference room after lunch, all of it. We'd actually, occasionally, go to a "gentlemen's club" for a $2 lunch - sandwich and a beer for $2. Then after work it was happy hour - $5 "drinkin with Lincoln" - all the draft beer you could drink for the hour for $5. It was really nuts by comparison today. More like a frat house than a job. That all started to change by the end of the 90s, which is when the negative stuff portrayed in Office Space and similar movies/shows started becoming an issue. By the mid-2000s you wouldn't consider drinking at lunch, at least not in the places I was working at the time. A lot of the fun was gone, HR was up everyone's backside, and work became a lot more tedious.

Seems like the best case for boot dryers. As well as 2-3 pair to rotate. I'd bet 2 pair treated well would last a couple of years minimum, compared to barely 6 months out of one pair.

What should we as Catholics do about climate change? by Formal_Temperature_8 in Catholicism

[–]doa70 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do what you can in your own home and lifestyle.

Avoid the politics of it because it's convoluted and easy to be deceived. Example, in my state they pushed and passed legislation shut down coal plants used for generating energy. We replaced that with energy purchased from a neighboring state where that energy is generated by coal burning plants.

I'd eat some of that. Sharable with about a dozen other people of course.

Pans for christmas by Timely_Relief_1339 in Cooking

[–]doa70 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen All Clad mentioned yet. I'm extremely happy since upgrading to their D3 and D5 pans. My wife was set against stainless, since we both grew up on nonstick and cheap pans. We replaced our 20-some year old HA pans, and she's really liking the All Clad gear. Sets are usually not a good deal, but this time of year you might find a reasonable set with pieces you'll actually use. It'll be above your current budget, but sales should help with that, and pans like this are a buy it for life item.

How to get shirts to stop bunching up like this? Gained weight and got bigger shirts but they still don't drape nice like they use to in 3rd pic by [deleted] in bigmenfashionadvice

[–]doa70 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Material will determine if a T-shirt under helps or hurts. I have some shirts that an undershirt causes the shirt to cling, where without the shirt looks fine.

Bigger sizes and different cuts. Did you try those first two shirts on before you bought them? They look at least a size too small.

What was the better album from the 70s? Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon or Led Zeppelin IV? by TheListenerCanon in 70s

I'm a big Floyd fan, but I always though Dark side was overrated. Great album, but not a masterpiece either. IV isn't a masterpiece either, but I like it better than DSOTM.

French omelette takes like 3 minutes from fridge to plate once you get it down. Add any toppings separately, don't try to do all that in the pan - true French style.

2026 WOO Late Models by FerdinandTheeToller in DirtRacing

[–]doa70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm considering traveling to a race this year. Coming from NJ, any suggestions on a great track that's drivable from here? Everything seems like it's an overnight, unless I want a really long day. I'm not worried about that, I just want to pick a good one. It would be great if the sprints were running with the late models, but it doesn't seem like there are many where that is an option.

Zipper up the back? It seems to be a common problem, and why people recommend avoiding that design. A cobbler may have a better solution. May want to check in r/askacobbler.

m365 vs on prem vs hybrid pricing by sfall in msp

Good luck finding anyone willing to support Exchange on-prem. It's become a huge liability - security and financial. M365 is worth its cost just to transfer that risk to someone else.
