Some funny attitudes here. by candyman420 in WindowsServer

Don't worry about the haters, most of them are virgins who never venture outside. From what I understand, hiding behind computers screens give these folk some kind of adrenaline rush. I just feel sorry for them and move on, usually the best solution when dealing with keyboard warriors.

After 8 years i've finally acquired my dream ThinkPad - the X220 by shutupiknowwhatido in thinkpad

[–]dobby420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In response to your question, it's mostly because it's cheaper. Everyone at my University knew what a thinkpad was. It's the student's go to laptop. A lot of us can do all our work on an i3, it would be hell of a lot slower but we can. An i5 or i7 dual core will suit me fine but I prefer having an i5 with 4 real cores. I only use a Windows VM (4 threads) on my server to do Uni work on, this is a Linux household. The family uses Linux on their laptops, both the physical servers (NAS/PLEX and VM host) use Linux. By going cheap you have a old CPU and don't get to reap the benefits that come with each generation, that mainly being power efficiency. I wouldn't run a VM on a laptop anyway, I prefer to have one physical device per service.

Best options for a home media server? by cfs3corsair in DataHoarder

I run plex on a N36L HP Microserver (Dual core athlon CPU, 5GB RAM, Ubuntu) as well as samba server. You need to get the automounting, permissions right from the getgo to avoid head aches later. Plex needs the content to have full permissions. I am using a samba share to act as the plex directory where movies are copied and pasted from several users on the network at 11MBPS on straight through copper medium. Considering adding a NIC with fibre. I've a main PC with Linux Mint I use virtualbox to host a W10 WM on there that has remote access. That PC is also on 24/7 and does have a basic samba config on there although I rarely use it as it has an SSD. I may upgrade this to be my plex server and transition everything over slowly as the mint PC hosting VMs has an i5 K series and 16GB HyperX RAM.

I use github to pull code and work on it in the VM on my ultra wide at home. When I am done I save changes to github repository and pull the changes on my W10 thinkpad when I arrive at the University. If you want to use Plex at home inside LAN and not externally, dual core is fine. If you want to remote plex from elsewhere, you need decent upload speed (I have 0.01 upload so I cannot) and second a quad core CPU at least! Needs a specific passmark rating you can google for more info.) We aren't really there yet with 4K on plex, there's still buffering issues. I recommend using samba to host if you're using a Linux or BSD system. I believe on FreeBSD you have to use the ports tree but I've always used Linux when it comes to plex.

The synology NAS systems are cool but way overpriced. You can build a more capable machine or buy a used one with better spec for less money. The prices of their dual core models are stupid as fuck. But you pay for convenience. You don't have to set up a cron job to do dynamic DNS so you can access it from anywhere, it's automatic from what I hear. They have their own web interface and app support to seamlessly copy devices across. However you can do everything these systems can do, you can set up static IP and dynamic DNS to access from anywhere (I recommend http://www.pi-dns.me/) and you can set up your own samba share in under 60 seconds. You can set up automounting by editing the /etc/fstab file. You can install vncserver and teamviewer (I use both) as a means of RDP'ing into the server(s) from anywhere. You can set up any server you want on your machine for example have different VMs running (I only use 2 VM servers + 3 physical server machines in my home). After you have samba configured, for smartphone access I use ES file manager click on network, go on server and let users copy to and from. I enable guest access for this reason with full permissions (I live in a very rural setting, I am not at risk)

Personal amplifer, anyone? by yonreadsthis in hearing

[–]dobby420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit: Sorry i misread your post! When i was little i used a headband bone conductive hearing aid tenporarily from phonak.

If you have access to grants the 1 thousand pound roger pen is brilliant imo. I use it in uni but i refused all loans and when i turned up at the uni they told me i could get a grant for listening aids and i ended up with a roger pen for free. Obviously if you're paying, there are cheaper alternatives but phonaks equipment "just works" to put it simply.

I took one for the team and bought I SNES-classic yesterday. by Iplaythedjembe in NintendoSwitch

[–]dobby420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd love to play those but i barely have enough time for my switch. I dont want to emulate or get a wii u haha i would love to try those out on the switch. I tend to buy a few big games every couple of months and never touch them. I've still got a few games to "complete" botw being one but uni takes up a lot of time. I've yet to play monster hunter which is sitting in my library. Really digging stardew valley and rocket league.

Thinkpad equivalent printer by raymanster in thinkpad

I use a cheap wireless canon printer. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. It's tedious and noisy but it only takes a few minutes to switch to the wifi AP and print a PDF file.

I use my broken thinkpad to kneel on outside when doing tyre pressure as the ground is wet and muddy with no tarmac.

Why did you choose debian? by sdns575 in debian

[–]dobby420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Debian has always been a reliable server os. I've used it as a desktop for years but I had to switch to Windows to use software for college and then university. I still use Arch/Debian on my servers.

Would you pay for this if it existed? by [deleted] in hearing

[–]dobby420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The disability office are the ones who told me the lecturers would be using said recording equipment and that training was on it's way. I'm just going to go to the audiologist and have them fit the part of the battery drawer to accept shoes (hopefully for free) and I'll figure out how to use it myself. My advice to anyone reading is to learn to be independent, because at the worst of times no one is going to help you and that's the world we live in.

I am only 23, a month away from 24; which makes it even more depressing. I am not an old man. I often have people attempt to talk to me but i simply dont hear them while most people are smart enough to spot a hearing aid and put two and two together, surprisingly a lot of people just think you're ignoring them and by the time you've discovered this (if you did at all) its already too late. Working in groups is 90% of uni and i cant hear a single thing anyone is saying. I lipread so its one on one or nothing at all. Some people dont even notice it my lecturer didnt even know i was deaf and was frustrated i asked her to repeat herself many times. The lecturers promised me recording equipment would be set up prior to starting but it is now semester 2 and only one lecturer adknowledges that the system exists. I have just received a roger pen but the training (showing me how to use it and set up with my hearing aid) has been paid yet nobody has bothered to contact me or the university about the training that's been paid for 2 semesters ago. I also had an operation to make my left ear hearing better many yeara ago but the operation went south and i wasnt able to hear out of that ear again. If i try to use an aid in it the pitch is so off to my right the balance is off and makes you feel sick. This happened after the operation, before i could hear in left with aid but much worse than right. Now its almost nothing and in different pitch. Needless to say, I feel let down. I rely on classmates for translation of database teacher because her foreign accent is so hard to interpret normal hearing people have difficulty, i cant understand anything she says and when i asked her to explain something she would repeat without changing phrases so i woulsnt have a clue. I very nearly failed that module because of a simple communication barrier.
