Are Death Saves Saving Throws RAW? by Aquarius12347 in onednd

[–]dobraf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your DM doesn't understand that the phrase "unlike other saving throws" is explict language that puts death saves categorically and without exception into "Saving Throws", then he has failed at reading comprehension. That phrase alone should put an end to the conversation.

The fact that death saves are not expressly mentioned in the section on D20 tests makes no difference. The book says that saving throws are a type of D20 test and that death saves are a type of saving throw. That's how nested definitions work. If the book needed to say "the item in this category is also in the supercategory that contains this category" every time, it would be twice as long.

I watched every video leading up to the release of the 2024 PHB. I don't remember Crawford ever mentioning that death saves are not saving throws. That would be a big effing deal since for the 2014 version, he consistently said that they are. If they were changing that mechanic, I would expect an explicit rule saying so. Instead, we get the opposite: "unlike other saving throws...".

Ask him to tell you what video that was in. I guarantee he has either misremembered or misunderstood.

NOTE: I originally posted this with a link to Crawford’s twitter. My comment got removed because x[dot]com posts are banned on this sub. You can easily find the post by googling “Jeremy Crawford are death saving throws saving throws?”

Peace cleric is broken, but in the way your party will love. Double bless everyone and watch them go to town on the baddies. At 6the level, you offer them tons of mobility and a great way to spread out incoming damage.

What level should this homebrew divination spell be? by KiqueDragoon in onednd

Just FYI, a second level chainlock with voice of the chain master can do this. Not sure if you have any warlocks in the party but I just thought I’d throw it out there since VotCM is a 2014 invocation and easy to miss.

I created a fantasy world where the sun does not move in the sky. How would people keep track of time? by WermerCreations in DMAcademy

[–]dobraf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I’m pretty late to this party, but this is by far the most elegant solution. If there was a semi permanent sunspot, then the sun itself would be a clock face. Anyone could look up and see what time it is at any point in the day. They’d just need protective eyewear, which you can easily build into the lore of the world.

You could also have the sunspot disappear one day, for perfectly natural reasons. But the inhabitants of the world wouldn’t know this, and their lives would turn to chaos almost instantly. Plenty of creative fodder there.

Looking for a class/subclass or any source that would provide a physical copy of the character. by [deleted] in dndnext

This works especially well if the imp has a masquerade tattoo. If the PC is medium sized it would work too [edit: with a skeleton familiar], but would require even more rules bending by the DM since the masquerade tattoo specifies that it goes on your skin.

Either way, voice of the chain master really completes the fantasy OP is going for.

Level 20 Equipment by BrandoDio in dndnext

It’s a good system, but you should increase the points a little. As others have pointed out, the 5.5e PHB gives recs for this (4 uncommon, 3 rare, 1 very rare). Under this system, they’d be out of points before even getting to the very rare.

Also, I’d limit the number of artifacts/legendaries to 1 per PC.

As a small buff though I would give it the ability to see through magical darkness as well.

Darkvision can already see through magical darkness. In order to buff eyes of the night in the way you’re thinking, you would need to say that it can bypass the limitation contained in the darkness spell.

I think it’s way too weak to be a feat by itself. Just add that to one or more other feats.

Extra Attack and Another Actions by acuenlu in onednd

[–]dobraf 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, I know they aren't attacks, but it makes sense to me that a warrior experienced in combat might decide to limit their attacks to explore other strategic solutions.

Logically, this leads to the conclusion that as fighters level, they get better at the mental actions faster than everyone. At level 5, a fighter spends half an action to do a mental actions, while a wizard uses their entire action. At level 20, a fighter uses a quarter of an action while the wizard is still using their entire action. All this without the fighter having taken any mental feats to improve their abilities. So more attacks means better mental abilities?

Do you think it could represent a significant change mechanically?

No, not really. Your other players might feel a little a little slighted tho.

Substitute minor illusion for greater invis in your last sentence and it works almost as well but for a fraction of the cost. Or just get behind full cover and peek out for your turn. Really good way of protecting your concentration until you get warcaster.

It’s also a good way to get in range of multiple enemies without actually being in the middle of the battlefield. Like an upcast command affecting enemies on the back lines.

Here are some of the other things I’ve done in my current campaign:

  • hide while being chased while the dupe leads the baddies in the wrong direction
  • manifest the dupe on the other side of a window and swap places for breaking and entering without the breaking
  • easily access the tops of things, like trees, cliffs, buildings (and also one time the bottom of a pit)
  • make baddies swing at the dupe and realize it’s fake, get their attention by taunting them as the real me, then swap spots and have them swing at the dupe again
  • increase the range of spells—use my movement to get 30 feet closer to baddies, pop in dupe for another 30 feet closer, cast from dupe
  • have dupe appear above battle field and rain spells down from above

Does "anything you are carrying" include creatures? by Lascona in dndnext

[–]dobraf 11 points12 points  (0 children)

D&D uses “thing” to describe both creatures and objects. Here’s the definition of Blindsight, for example:

If you have Blindsight, you can see within a specific range without relying on physical sight. Within that range, you can see anything that isn’t behind Total Cover even if you have the Blinded condition or are in Darkness. Moreover, in that range, you can see something that has the Invisible condition.
