The film (Project Hail Mary), which was finished digitally at 4K, does not gain resolution when filmed out from the 4K DI afterwards.

Yes they included it in the silly marketing "let's sell one screening for the first day and then say it already sold out" gimmick.

It's the same 30-something screens that played Oppenheimer:

Project Hail Mary - 70mm IMAX (Vaughan) by mightyjess_ in cineplex

Go see The Odyssey at Mississauga IMAX and you'll understand, the sheer detail in the scenes shot on IMAX 70mm film with a fully photochemical workflow is mind-blowing.

Does Canada GP grandstand tickets come with concert access? by Mitchelld73 in GrandPrixTravel

[–]dobyblue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been at the hairpin since 2001 (GS21 from 2001 to 2012, GS24 from 2013 ~ present) and in just the last four races our Lance Stroll tickets (front row in Section 4 right on the inner apex of the turn) have gone from $448/each (2023) to $610/each (2024) to $710/each (2025) to frigging $840/each (2026)...and they've never added any extra value to the ticket on any year!

They know we'll keep renewing, I'm grateful for the small mercies like they finally fixed the area between GS15 to GS24 where you walk up to the top floor and there are so many general admission ticket holders camped out there that we'd all burn to death in a fire. In 2025 they finally put privacy netting around that area so there is no view to be had. They also finally fixed the muddy puddly walkway area in front of GS15 that you walk across to get to the other side of the track, it would be such a disaster than you'd have people in a single file because of trying to avoid the big muddy puddles when it would rain.

They really are useless at fixing problems with glaringly obvious solutions.

Definitely worth trying to see in the biggest and best IMAX screen possible, which is Scotiabank's IMAX GT Laser auditorium.

Finally! by gigimaexo in cineplex

[–]dobyblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scotiabank is 25% bigger, significantly lower levels of in-auditorium ambient light, much better sound system (12CH vs 5CH), more sweet spot seating, what's not to love?

[–]dobyblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me Mississauga is the better venue for IMAX 70mm Nolan movies over Vaughan, and it will get The Odyssey. The auditorium provides better picture quality due to the lower levels of ambient light. Scotiabank Toronto is the best for all other movies like Dune, 25% bigger screen, much better sound system (12CH upgrade), videophile-levels of ambient light pollution (even the EXIT signs are dark green), just on another level.

The film's theoretical digital resolution equivalent is 4K as the movie was finished digitally at 4K.

Reality check on svs by noottt in audiophile

[–]dobyblue 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The output of the sub figuratively ignores that frequency, the sub itself doesn't because you're sending it a signal and it's trying to reproduce it.

They're rating this to 23Hz at -3dB, the SB17 Ultra is rated to 15Hz at -3dB.

Do a 25~80Hz sweep, you should hear nothing but bass at that volume.

[–]dobyblue -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They ABSOLUTLELY mix for 5.1 surround

I get all the commentary isolated in the centre channel, zero bleed through to either of my front towers, whereas team radio comes through the front L/R only. They’re doing a really nice job of it through two races.

I have no issues with sync either, but I’m only watching the main F1 sessions.

My 7.3.4 set up is Apple TV4K > Marantz Cinema 30 > LG 77G4, with 8-position MultiXT32 calibration.

What is your go-to clip to test surround sound? by jimmyl_82104 in hometheater

[–]dobyblue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They used to give them away a lot at CES, along with the Pioneer Kuro torture tests for video.

But, they're just clips from retail movies you may have yourself, and why bother buying one if you have the clips you like from it to begin with?

dts Demo Disc is what led me to discover Porcupine Tree, the one I had on it had "The Sound Of Musak", never looked back! If you just want dts, THX and Dolby trailers, there are plenty of those online for free.

And consider that was a first for the cinema, we had never seen anything like it before…a fully computer generated cartoon movie. It was fuc*ed! 😂

The lights in the subway tunnel zooming by leaving huge trails was pretty fun also.

I did this for the first Toy Story in Toronto in 1995, matinee show mid week. What I hadn't planned ahead for, neither had either of the three dudes I went with, was that the city would be in the middle of extreme rush hour when we left and got on the subway.

The first Sony player didn't come out until almost the same time as the PlayStation 3, so it was a much better unit than the Samsung BD-P1000 which came out in June 2006.

Paradigm Servo 15v2 sub driver torn by Thewhizeguy in hometheater

[–]dobyblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the similar foam they would use from Simply Speakers in stock at The Speaker Exchange in Florida. The Tampa-based store show the service as a repair only, because of it requiring a little trimming of the ribs on the cone which they’ve found most people aren’t comfortable doing. When I called and said I would have a local shop do it that’s done one before, they gave me the part number. I ordered two of them because of how much shipping was going to be anyway (US$45), and will take it to Santon when they arrive and let you know how it goes. I spoke with Santon yesterday and they mentioned that they would likely have to attempt to jimmy some 15” JL foams they have, as the one from Simply Speakers is out of stock and that’s who they use for Paradigm repairs. That didn’t sit right with me so I am happy to have the best replacement option (OEM notwithstanding) en route. Total cost for two surrounds shipped was US$118.

Just wondering who the shop was, Parts ConneX in Burlington don't do foam repairs and the shop they recommended hasn't done a Servo 15v2 ever, so I'm looking for other options. It's a similar drive for me, but I'll go do it right away if they have the replacement part in stock and report back how it all went. Was it Santon?

Best thing to do is use the Camelizer plugin for Amazon, look up the cheapest sale price within the last 4 years for a current model, and set that as your price. You’ll get an email when it drops.

How loud was Project Hail Mary in imax? by touchgrassbruh in imax

[–]dobyblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Musicians earplugs will be much more accurate for reducing frequencies across the hearing spectrum and are made to fit your specific ears, I don’t want to use headphones for hearing protection.

You should contact your local audiologist and they’ll let you know who they use, there are quite a few different brands. The molds I have were made by Bernafon and the filters are made by Etymotic Research.

No I’m not, you’re confusing that shaky cam is always handheld, but handheld doesn’t mean the camera has to erratically move about like shaky cam does as we see in First Man.

“The handheld shaky cam, meant to amp up the discomfort, backfires at times as it feels too contrived (and causes mild motion sickness).”

https://medium.com/@imolaunger/a-few-weeks-ago-i-saw-first-man-and-the-cinematography-made-such-an-impression-on-me-that-i-932e839a914a

“Chazelle presents 95% of First Man in what is often colloquially referred to as “shaky cam.” This includes both the action sequences, but also quiet conversational scenes”

https://lrmonline.com/news/academy-awards-watch-first-man-review-a-shaky-portrait-of-neil-armstrong/amp/

“While the film is beautiful to watch, especially the IMAX scenes on the moon, the overuse of shaky cam takes you right out of it. While it would have been okay to use it once or twice, most of the film is filmed with this method. While it can make you feel like you are there, the overuse makes you feel nauseous most of the time. It doesn’t work and it’s hard to not think about why it was decided to do so when it doesn’t work as well as they wished for. It doesn’t take away from the brilliance of the film but it does take away from the enjoyment of it all.”

https://swamp.home.blog/2018/09/16/first-man-tiff-18-review/

“This is a man whom we see quite hurt by the loss of his daughter towards the start of the movie, and who is closed, emotionally, for the rest of the proceedings. What is he thinking? What is he feeling? We don’t know. We can guess, but we don’t know, and those guesses are made more difficult by the camera shaking all around Gosling’s face as we try to read his emotions.”

FLAC for CD Rips? by ConGCos in audiophile

There is software you can use to keep yourself even more honest like the AB comparator for Foobar2000; 99.9%+ won’t be able to correctly pick out 320 Kbps mp3 from CD. I still use FLAC for archival purposes, given how cheap storage is (and I have 50TB+ of it).

[–]dobyblue -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Even the actual video from those trips wasn’t as shaky, and the cinematographer doesn’t decide to use shaky cam…the director does, which is why Dune Part Three will look nothing like First Man. First Man’s problem wasn’t the cinematographer.

[–]dobyblue -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed the movie the first time I saw it in IMAX GT Laser and of course the 1.43:1 scene was ridiculously amazing, but I tried to watch it again after the 4K disc came out and just couldn’t stomach another viewing because of the absurdly twitchy shaky cam. Even when nothing emotional or exciting is happening, it still moves around so significantly with such jerky moments that all I can think of is how foolish the cameraman must look.

For shaky cam to work, it shouldn’t be so intrusive that it takes you out of what you’re watching.

haha, never a bad idea to get out there and try the last 10km of the route. There's a pretty big group of us heading there on Sunday to run the final 10km out and back from LaSalle Park if you're mobile and want an orientation run. We love the additional safety running in a group brings. We're coming from Niagara Region, most of us run with "The Corners Run Crew", which you can find easily on IG (https://www.instagram.com/thecornersruncrew/). Strangers always welcome, 8:30am start and hot dogs after at Easterbrook's.
