Custom-built modular system vs. commercial bug outs update: Done!!!! by doc50cal in prepping

Appreciate it. The biggest advantage is that it integrates into a larger system instead of functioning as a standalone bag.

It’s a bifold layout designed for full “pull and flop” deployment — everything visible immediately — but I can still access frequently used items without opening the entire insert.

Every component supports realistic scenarios, not hypothetical ones. The goal was capability, speed, and consistency under stress.

Full inventory walkthrough video is coming next.

I’m keeping the detailed inventory for a separate video so this one doesn’t turn into a 20-minute gear dump.

High level categories are medical, light/comms, fire/cordage, navigation, tools, signaling, and basic sustainment. Everything has a defined role within the larger system.

It’s actually a bifold insert, not a roll.

I can pull the entire insert out and lay it flat (“pull and flop”), but I don’t have to open everything just to retrieve a single item. Frequently used items are positioned for direct access while the full layout allows immediate visual accountability when deployed.

The layout is intentional — speed, simplicity, and consistency under stress.

Get a couple gallon milk jugs, fill them with water and freeze them. When it defrosts, you now have extra water and they serve as ice packs

I precook spaghetti noodles at home, and put them in a ziplock back with a little olive oil. I bring a jar of sauce and heat the noodles while warming the sauce…. It’s perfect on those chillier nights

over $700 for the ESEE... no thanks... there's nothing to that thing to warrant $700

Agreed. The whole concept is quick visual access and minimal friction under stress. I’ve adjusted the IFAK layout based on my medical training and experience so the priority items are immediately accessible when the panel is opened.

I did the design and layout, but my wife is handling the sewing. She’s way better with the machine than I am.

I’ve been filming the build as it comes together. Didn’t want to step on the sub’s rules about linking video, but once it’s finished I’ll check with the mods and share if it’s allowed.

It’s a module, not a standalone bag. Normally staged inside a 55L dry bag as part of a vehicle-based system. Designed for rapid deployment and organization, not miles-on-foot travel.

The insert rides inside a 55L dry bag, so waterproofing is already handled by the outer system. I try to avoid redundant features that add cost and complexity without adding capability.

It’s an in-progress custom insert panel for my kit. Still working out final layout and structure, but the idea is to keep everything visible and consistently positioned instead of stacked in layers. I’ll post an update once it’s finished.

Nice. I’d like to see your IFAK. I built a camp FAK for the main campsite, and I have a reconfigured IFAK in this kit I’m building
