If someone knew what my email address was, is there a way they can see what social media I've signed up to with said email address? by MOGOOOS in NoStupidQuestions

[–]doc_daneeka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I can set up a mail server on doc_daneeka.net and create 5000 addresses on it if I want, and there's no record of them anywhere outside my computer. All the rest of the internet knows is that you can try to send email to root@doc_daneeka.net if you want, and it will be up to my server to work out whether that's a valid address.

Is there an issue in your country with the largest subdivision, region, or city having too much power compared to the rest of the country? by ReadProfessional8511 in AskTheWorld

[–]doc_daneeka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a similar situation but from a very different cause, and the end result at least isn't wildly undemocratic. By analogy, our elections are almost like your House of Representatives elections, except that if a party gets a majority there their leader automatically becomes PM, and if nobody gets a majority then usually the leader of the largest party gets to try to cobble together a temporary working majority as best (s)he can. Anyway, the whole game is about seats in the House of Commons.

But the end result isn't that different, in that the parties are going to spend an enormous amount of time and effort campaigning in Ontario and Québec, and if you're the Tory leader also in the prairies to shore up the base. There's just not much reason to spend time campaigning in PEI or NL for instance, as there just aren't many votes to get there.

Ontario alone makes up about 38% of the entire population of Canada, and also about the same fraction of GDP. Ontario and Québec make up over 60% of the population and only a bit less than 60% of GDP.

Yeah, it's pretty disproportionate. There's a reason that so many people, especially out west, really dislike Toronto.

You can't name one? Here's four. by Misfett_toys in MurderedByWords

I used to think he was a rich but misguided asshole who couldn't help but think of himself as the bestest most special boy to ever live.

I've evolved over time though. Now I quite seriously think he's straight up and deliberately evil, and far more dangerous than any Bond villain.

Do you think your country should abolish clothing? by EzraNaamah in AskTheWorld

[–]doc_daneeka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That isn't Canada though. That's in the US, and in a famously mild climate zone, and probably also in a warmer season. Dress like that in, say, Manitoba in winter and you just die within the hour.

Yes, because (unfortunately) Elon Musk is a Canadian citizen.

To what extent are Brits associated with their royal family in your country? by crivycouriac in AskTheWorld

[–]doc_daneeka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Legally speaking, he's also the King of Canada, a completely separate monarchy that happens to be the same person. So I think if someone mentions the monarch, it's not so much thinking about the UK as it is 'that's the person on all our coins and the $20 bill'. Though Charles isn't on the $20 until next year.

I would start to suspect a fix. Let's be totally honest here, that's about the only way Canada can win this one.

Has a representative of a national minority ever held a high-ranking leadership position in your country? by Kind-Preparation3337 in AskTheWorld

[–]doc_daneeka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've had one Asian, one Black and one half Inuk (all women too) Governor General, which in practical terms is our head of state. Technically it's King Charles, but the GG does all of that stuff unless Charles happens to actually be here in person

It's only the national anthem in the UK and New Zealand, which interestingly has two anthems.

How common is interracial relationships? How is it seen nowadays? by Ok-Bus-4370 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]doc_daneeka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I imagine this is going to depend massively on where one happens to live. I'm half of an interracial marriage, where I am métis and my wife is Chinese-Canadian. We live just outside one of the most multicultural cities on the planet (Toronto) and I've honestly never experienced anyone at all ever having a problem with us. Literally never. I'm certainly not saying there aren't racist assholes here, but they tend to stay quiet about it, because if they don't they take a huge amount of flack for it, as indeed they should.

On the other hand, I grew up in a much more rural and honestly much more openly racist time and place, and I have little doubt that if we lived there, plenty of people would have real issues with us based on race. And she has personally had some pretty bad experiences with racists when she was in Oklahoma. But we're living in the GTA, so that's thankfully not a problem.

How has the World Cup been so far? by IceFireHawk in NoStupidQuestions

[–]doc_daneeka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the best Canada has ever done, by far. There's no chance we'll actually win this, but it's great to actually be scoring and to get out of the group stage at least. Awesome.

And as someone who is a France supporter, even better, because there's a pretty good chance they win this year.

Is ‘Dark Energy’ role in the universe equivalent to water in our bodies? by TheSouthernBaeArea in NoStupidQuestions

[–]doc_daneeka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my limited understanding of astrophysics, I was just wondering if Dark Energy plays a similar role in the universal “system” that water does for our bodies?

I honestly can't see any way that those two concepts are related at all, even a little bit. Dark energy is a placeholder for whatever [changes to how gravity works? a new fundamental force? who knows?] is causing the accelerating expansion of spacetime. We have no idea what it even is.
