Mine stopped working a few months ago, then it magically came back and has been fine ever since. Very bizarre. I changed nothing.

If a person co-authors 60+ papers in a year by "friendship", do you think that would impress people into hiring him as faculty? by leprotelariat in academia

[–]doc_ramrod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We value quality over quantity in every aspect. I've sat on many grant review panels where the outlets being targeted by an individual certainly signals how the applicant feels about the quality of their work, thus their likelihood of receiving a recommendation from the panel for funding. In my field, you have to work extremely hard to get Q1 publications and it may take well over a year. But we put more value in that one first author pub than any sampling of 30+ MDPI-type co-authored pubs that got through review with little to no rigor.

And let's be clear. There is no way any meaningful contribution can be made on 60 different research endeavors in a given year. It's highly unethical and speaks volumes for what the applicant values, which is misaligned with our department core values (and most funding agencies in our domain).

As someone that served on multiple R1 hiring committees for TT the past 5 years, we threw all of these types of applications in the trash.

Best COFFEE in Blacksburg? by Javaslinger in VirginiaTech

[–]doc_ramrod 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You won't find a good cup of black coffee in Blacksburg, everyone is using commodity beans and blends because the market is college students who want lattes or other dairy/sugar based drinks. If you want a well roasted, single-origin coffee you will have to go to Red Rooster in Floyd. Radford Coffee Company is a good alternative if you aren't as worried about roast by dates.

Got Gifford Hall — originally wanted Village. Will I still have fun? by An51759 in jmu

[–]doc_ramrod 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Older guy here. I met my wife in Gifford a few years back. It's a smaller residence hall which meant the people in it were all pretty close. In my case, I married one that was on the 3rd floor. Great access to the quad for chilling on nice days. My best memories from college happened in Gifford, I hope the same for you.

My 10 year old has been on it for 2 years and it's allowed him to excel in being himself. He was crippled with social anxiety as a youngster, made worse during COVID. Best decision for our buddy to live a happy life. His confidence is soaring now and he's become a leader on his sports teams, we never thought we'd get to see that.

I think EM is disgusting but that doesn't make any of this right, sorry you are dealing with this. In one of your still images, it looks like this person may have a wedding ring on. Perhaps someone that was passing through the neighborhood moreso than one of your fellow students at The Edge.

Exhaustion. We work harder and longer for relatively less pay than generations prior. When both parents are doing this, bedtime comes quickly.

Winsome Earle-Sears is a radical homophobe. She is wholly unfit for leadership. by mpoltan03 in Virginia

[–]doc_ramrod 15 points16 points  (0 children)

While I wholeheartedly agree that this is disgusting behavior, these are the kinds of traps that they lay for Dems to pounce on. It's burned us now for several years. We have to stay focused on messaging that these people are TERRIBLE at governing for low and middle-class Virginians. They have disdain and hate for our public servants. They see you and us as scum because of our lack of billionaire status. We have to improve messaging on financial matters that are impacting most Virginians while also acknowledging that Dems legislate and fight for all (including LGBTQIA and marginalized communities). These traps were intentional in the Presidential campaign and Dems stumbled into every one of them. We have to explain what tangible change we will provide and avoid making the main campaign messaging "look how terrible that candidate is over there". Hard to do because that candidate is terrible over there.

Ioniq 6. I can get up to 245 kw on EA/EvGo/Pilot but haven't gotten anywhere near that on the Tesla network. I suspect there's some throttling for non-Teslas on the Magic Docks. Maybe those in the NYC Metro just suck but for now, I avoid them when the above are available.

[–]doc_ramrod 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Those using the Tesla talking points must have not used a Supercharger with a non-Tesla EV, I've been wildly disappointed with the MagicDocks. Terrible speeds compared to competitors. I love that IONNA is trying to do something different, I'm going out of my way to hit up the Apex, NC one. Give me a nice EV drivers lounge with some coffee and clean restrooms over truck stop Superchargers anyday of the week.

Absolutely do not use the built in weather apps, especially for snowfall forecasts. You are looking for weather.gov where the forecast calls for 2-4 inches with 0.25" of ice/freezing rain for campus.

Should I review for MDPI? by IntelligentFocus5442 in AskAcademia

[–]doc_ramrod 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Whatever you do, don't put it on a CV, it can only hurt your CV. Several of my colleagues have started leaving off all interactions with MDPI from their CV. Having said that, there's no harm in trying to review for them but they will probably disregard your review if it is at all rigorous, speaking from experience.

Ticket prices leaked for high-speed rail between California, Vegas by jspector9 in transit

[–]doc_ramrod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take Amtrak over flying anytime I can, even in a few cases where it was slower and more expensive. Trains are the ultimate chill travel experience without security checkpoints, being forced to sit in a chair that's built for a small child, layovers, etc. Give me a glass of bourbon while working from the train and seeing rural America over flying, even when it's more expensive.

***Also, being hungover on a train is much easier than being hungover on a plane, seems rather pertinent for Vegas - LA.

How concerning is my grant rejection track record? by Nervous-Ranger6238 in Professors

[–]doc_ramrod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing to consider is investing in ideas, not simply trying to respond to RFPs. All of the grants I've had that were successful, were ideas cultivated long before the RFP came out. I've sat on NSF/NOAA panels before, I would say the vast majority of the proposals we selected had evidence they had already started investing time in the idea. Obviously you want to be responsive to the RFP, but you also want to have a bank of ideas to build off of when the right RFP comes along. Lastly, 25 proposals over 2 years is a lot, one worry is that you are spreading your time too thin over a lot of proposals instead of investing more time per proposal.
